Are you planning on going abroad this year?

Many people will have holidays booked over the summer holidays and into the autumn. It seems like airlines are planning to fly to spain/greece/Italy/France from July onwards. If that happens and the return quarantine is lifted are you still planning on travelling?
Ideally I'd like to get away if I can in September but I'm wondering if I'm being too optimistic for a normal beach holiday as we knew it before.

I'm really hoping to get to the States for Christmas. Not really a holiday per se, just really want to see my parents and sister. They should be here now and we would've been there in August. My mum said she won't travel until there's a vaccine so we'll have to go to them until then.

Batmanandbobbin · 30/05/2020 13:26

I have holiday booked in Spain 2nd August, unless we can’t go, we will be going.

Doyoumind · 30/05/2020 13:26

No. I think it might be possible to go on the holiday I paid a deposit for but we won't go because there will be restrictions on what we can do and it's not worth the risk for anyone.

IJustWantFiveMinutesAlone · 30/05/2020 13:29

No, we moved our family holiday to next year.

Mumtothelittlefella · 30/05/2020 13:31

We’ve got a holiday booked for Greece (SC) in July. We want to move it to next year but at the moment can’t as the airline is still flying there. But the FCO advises that we’d have to be tested on arrival to Greece and then isolate for 14 days so not a particularly great holiday. It’s doable if we could arrange food delivery as the cottage has a pool and beach access but I doubt we’d get any help. We’re in limbo until about 14 days until departure.

LockdownLucie · 30/05/2020 13:32

No we were due to go to Portugal in August we have to pay the remainder of the balance by mid June. I haven’t cancelled it yet but I am hoping they may it won’t go ahead before we pay the balance then we can cancel then.
I love my holidays at home and abroad but with the risks so high I wouldn’t even fancy a luxury holiday let in this country this year. As I would be worried about the cleaning and transmission. Also part of a holiday for us is about going to different beaches with open public toilets, going to some attractions, exploring little villages, going to nice cafe’s, restaurants and bars. We might as well stay safe at home and save the money.

DBML · 30/05/2020 13:34

No. Anyone who goes on holiday abroad this year is utterly selfish and rather stupid.

You won’t be pleased to know that I’m fully intending on going to the states this summer if I can get there. Or that I’m considering a cheeky little getaway later in the year.

I’d also just like to remind you that when you do flippantly suggest no one should want to go abroad this year, you are condemning thousands of U.K. citizens to job loss, hardship and an uncertain future. Not something I’d personally wish on others.

AnneElliott · 30/05/2020 13:51

Nothing booked but would consider a late deal to Greece in Sept/October.

Glittertwins · 30/05/2020 13:52

We were due to go to France later in the summer. We can't cancel but we can rebook for next year and not make any further payments - our deposit has been carried over.
This has worked out perfectly for us - we were always going to rebook for next year if we had to write off this year and we at least get the dates that we want as well.

AgeLikeWine · 30/05/2020 13:57

I have already had to cancel two holidays due to covid, one to Slovenia in April and the other to the US in June. I haven’t completely given up hope for France in the autumn, but it depends on FCO advice, quarantine rules, second peak etc etc. I certainly won’t be flying anywhere until this nightmare is over.

Crosswordocelot · 30/05/2020 14:10

We booked long haul flights for christmas before covid 19 was declared a pandemic. We wont want to go if a) destination or stop iff countries have a second peak b) we get a second peak here around then, c) we'll have to quarantine in either the destination or when we arrive home. No idea if any of that is covered by insurance. But it's the most we've ever spent on a holiday and I'll be gutted if we loose the money and the holiday!

drivinmecrazy · 30/05/2020 15:11

We will be going to Spain as soon as we are able. We'll be staying with my DM but have agonised over whether to go.
It's incredibly selfish of us but DM has been alone in strict lockdown for three months so it's important to me to go.
However we are voluntarily self isolating for a week when we arrive and are prepared to accept the strict rules that are imposed.
Fortunately our circumstances mean we are not time restricted, we'd normally be there for all of the summer holidays normally.
But to go on holiday? No way!
We've had to look at every scenario such as what would happen should Spain or U.K. go into lockdown while we are away. Wouldn't go if there was a teensy chance we'd be stuck in a hotel with symptoms or unable to get home.
I'm actually very nervous of travelling to a region with one of the lowest rates of covid In Spain from a country that hasn't yet got a grip of infection rates.

momtoolliex · 30/05/2020 15:15

I am going to Paris for a weekend in December but made sure everything's refundable just incaseSmile

FelineUK · 30/05/2020 15:16

Had booked hotels for Istanbul and Cappadocia early October, nothing else, and these can be cancelled until beginning September. DH is adamant we're NOT going but I still want to get away, even for a week, so now looking at a week in Ireland, where we'd do road trips and self-catering so basically restricting human contact ;-)

Ylvamoon · 30/05/2020 15:17

I have cottage holiday booked in France with family from abroad (not France or uk). I don't think I'll be going... too much travelling and mixing with other people.

What a dickish and supercilious comment.

We have Portugal booked end of August. If it's open we will gladly go. The Portuguese are already thinking of ways to facilitate this.

We always self cater so quite happy to do a low key beach holiday.

chocolatesaltyballs22 · 27/06/2020 13:17

Just resurrecting this one given the FCO advice is about to change, and the quarantine requirement is being lifted for certain destinations.

Is anyone planning a trip this summer?

RunningNinja79 · 27/06/2020 13:55

8 weeks today I'm driving down to the south of France. Still planning to go. At one point I didn't think we would be going, but its looking more and more likely by the day.

Travelling by the train so there's no airport or crowds of other travellers etc anyway.

We booked it just before Christmas

user1728393 · 27/06/2020 14:13

If an air bridge is announced we'll be going away the week after next. Quiet destination, plan on hiring a car now and I had an email from our travel insurance saying we're covered though I do plan to call them to confirm this.

40somethingJBJ · 27/06/2020 17:30

I’m hoping to be able to drive over to Spain to stay with a friend in October, but I wouldn’t want to fly. The thought of being on a plane crammed in with loads of people makes me very anxious. I’ve got a eurocamp type holiday booked in the Netherlands in August, but haven’t booked the ferry yet as I’m not sure how I feel about going. Chances are, we probably won’t.

confusedandtired99 · 28/06/2020 02:03

We were supposed to be doing three weeks touring Europe this summer. We aren’t going. There’s always next year

alwayscrashinginthesamecar1 · 28/06/2020 02:10

Nope. I'm in Western Australia and our border is shut for at least another few months. But that means we are practically COVID free (four current cases), so I'm ok with that.

girlicorne · 28/06/2020 10:21

We moved our July trip to Spain to next year a couple of months ago, I don’t regret this decision as I think it wouldn’t be as good. However we might look at a couple of European theme park breaks October half term and Christmas, I will watch some vlogs to see what the parks look like first I think. I won’t go if there’s quarantine either end though!

colouringindoors · 28/06/2020 13:03

We have a week's holiday in France booked in August. I'm really torn. French rates of cases are much lower than here, everyone wears masks in shops and on public transport - this is enforced. And we'd be outside most of the time...

MinesaPinot · 28/06/2020 17:49

We were supposed to be going to Greece at the end of August but have today heard from friends in Holland (who go to the same hotel at the same time as us) that our hotel will not now be opening. We'd also heard that another of the hotels in the village were also not opening. It's a shame but we were swaying between going and deferring so the decision had been made for us. We haven't heard from our travel company yet but their website says we should hear by 10 July.
