Which schools are 'opening' on Monday?

The authority next to ours has announced today that all their schools are delaying opening for nursery, reception, years 1 and 6 until at least the 15th June. Are other authorities doing this?

Buckinghamshire. Infant school opening for pre-school, YR and Y1 next week. The school only goes up to Y2, so three quarters of the school are returning. 2 days a week per child. I'm very impressed.

Dinnertime22 · 30/05/2020 00:02

No date for y6. Possible date of the 11th for reception and 15th for y1. Possible dates.
They are having to arrange the classrooms and prepare.

BarcelonaFreddie · 30/05/2020 01:09

Greater Manchester - Rec, Yr 1 and Yr 6 plus vulnerable and key worker kids in from Monday.
Full days. Monday to Friday.
Letter hand posted through the door today with our individual pick up, collection points and entry and exit doors.

happypotamus · 30/05/2020 08:43

I am in Birmingham. School won't open until the 8th (and that could change during the week) for years 1 and 6, Reception the next week, but only 1 day a week for each child. Keyworker children can still go when needed for childcare reasons but will be kept separate from the rest of their class.

girlicorne · 30/05/2020 08:44

We are in Nottinghamshire, Nottingham City have recommended schools don’t open for reception and years 1 and 6 next week. I don’t know what’s happening here within the county, my son is Y5 and we haven’t had any indication or announcement from school as to if and when they will be back. I will be sending him back when we are able to, we are OK at home but he needs his friends and to be back at school. He knows it will be different but he is happy to go back.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 30/05/2020 08:54

Derbyshire here and our school plans to open on the 8th but the council get the final say.

1happyhippie · 30/05/2020 09:01

Cumbria here. Our school is opening for key workers children on 1st.
They are looking to see how many more children they can accommodate on 15th.

Wait4nothing · 30/05/2020 09:10

Derbyshire - wider opening postponed on county council advice. Increase of key worker children.
@BornOnThe4thJuly how is the school opening to year groups outside of n, r, y1 and y6? Are these only to key workers? As the way you’ve written it would suggest any parents who need childcare can go but obviously schools are closed to year 2-5 by the government (except for children of key workers for childcare reasons).

AlwaysTimeForWine · 30/05/2020 09:18

Buckinghamshire - our school is open to Yr R, 1 and 6 from Monday 1st, every morning.

I also don't understand why schools need another week (unless in an area with high cases).

We've had 3 weeks notice that we could be opening on the 1st so our school was sorted out in the week before half term. Everything was moved around, set up and more cleaning supplies ordered. Risk assessments done, bubbles organised, staffing rota sorted.

So we are ready to go and just need the kids.

Shitfuckoh · 30/05/2020 09:19

NE here.
1 of ours is open to Keyworkers & Vulnerable children. It was going to open for Nursery, Reception, Yr 1 and 6 on the 8th. They'd put it back to the 15th based on LA & SAGE information.
2 days a week.

The other is contacting limited number of parents - Keyworkers and Vulnerable to offer more places but is not reopening to other students.

flameprincess · 30/05/2020 09:21

Ours was going to (it's 3 tier system so out of years 3-6 that normally attend they would only have minimal year 6 numbers attending) - they emailed yesterday to say after consulting with the unions it's not happening now. No date given for when it is.

I emailed back to express my disappointment and they offered to send my child library books.....

Hollyhead · 30/05/2020 09:23

Ours is opening to just yR to start with from Monday 4.5 days per week, bubbles but not social distancing, mostly outdoor forest school activities, easily cleanable toys.

Mum45678 · 30/05/2020 09:37

Haringey London - ours is y6 on the 8th, y1 on the 15th and no word on R children yet. All for two days a week. Yet an academy school less than 10 minutes away can offer all three groups full time from June 1st.

I’m pretty fed up, the school have offered us very minimal support. I’m a single parent with two young children trying to work full time. I’m lucky enough to have a nanny coming for four hours a day (she was after school only for me before) but she has only been coming for the last few weeks when restrictions were lifted.

Barbie222 · 30/05/2020 09:37

We are opening on Tuesday part time to YR, Y1 and Y6. There has been a low uptake, about half of each bubble full at the bottom end of the school. More in y6.

Yoyomar · 30/05/2020 09:42

Our Nottinghamshire school was planning on opening on June 1st and had told parents so.

Yesterday the council told the school they aren't allowed to open so now they are not opening. The teachers had spent ages working out how to organise everything, and now they are not allowed to open.

Walkaround · 30/05/2020 09:57

@NoForksToGive - I don’t think primary schools will be opening to years 2-5 (except keyworkers’ children) before September: following Government guidelines on getting years R, 1 and 6 back has taken up every single available classroom and teacher in most schools (if parent uptake is at a reasonable level), so no capacity left for anyone else. Massively changing the way they want children to return to school, which would require massively different risk assessments, and/or finding alternative venues to turn into education facilities would take more than the few weeks left of the summer term.

ElsasSalamander · 30/05/2020 10:19

Ours is opening to keyworkers, YR, Y1 & Y6 from Monday. No idea if the remaining year groups will make it back but surely they will have to announce/release guidance on that soon to give schools time to plan for it. I can’t see it happening at our school. It’s a small village primary with mixed yeargroup classes & all the teachers bar the head are covering the classes starting on Monday. There’s no staff or space to fit the remaining year groups

BornOnThe4thJuly · 30/05/2020 10:59

@Wait4nothing

I don’t know why they’ve decided to do their own thing. They have been talking a lot about wanting to support families throughout lockdown, and I guess they feel it’s crucial that parents can return to work. The newsletter says -

Wednesday 10th June:
Year 2, 3, 4 and 5 children of key workers and those required to return to work ONLY

So that is before they’re taking YR back for families who don’t need childcare, even though they said they were prioritising YR. It used to be a 2 form entry school, and now is only 1 form per year, since changes with another local school meant less demand. So I guess they’ve got more room to spread out, that doesn’t explain how they’re going to staff it though. YR have 3 classrooms for example, the main one, a “cafe” and an activities room. YR also have a full time TA as well as a TA that’s 1-2-1 for a child full time. There is a high number of PP kids so I guess they use that money for TA’s and other extra staff, family worker etc.

Tearingmyhairout0110 · 30/05/2020 11:08

Our LA is encouraging schools to open, however we are on the bottom for 5 for cases per population so we really should be leading the way so it makes sense. May be different now everyone has descended on the beaches for all of half term..

My DDs school are only opening for keyworker and vulnerable as once they had allocated those fully there were 160 children. No room for any others.

MarieQueenofScots · 30/05/2020 11:10

No opening here as yet and only “considering a 15th June start for Yr 10 and 12.

Both local LEAs (live in one, DD is at school in another) are “supporting schools in whatever decision they make”.

mamaduckbone · 30/05/2020 17:14

Northamptonshire - we're open to key worker children, YR Y1 and Y6 from
Monday, 4 days a week ( Friday closed for deep cleaning and to keep on top of the prep for the year groups still learning from home)
I find it odd that schools are saying they need to remain closed to prepare bubbles, protocols etc as we've had 2 weeks before half term to do this. We've also been in at half term for meetings to make sure we're ready for Monday.
However, we will only have a max of around 30 children in school whereas my ds's school could have close on 200, so they are staggering the start and none are back until the 8th at the earliest.

TildaTurnip · 30/05/2020 17:16

Just had email from the NEU saying that 4 of the SAGE govt advisors have broken rank to say that schools are not safe to open yet as TTI isn’t ready.

mamaduckbone · 30/05/2020 17:16

Just to add, we have no capacity to open to other year groups - we're using all our staff and all our classrooms for R,1 & 6 plus keyworkers.
