Do you think people will be more likely to take term time holidays next year?

I’m wondering if people will be more relaxed about taking term time holidays next year partly because kids have missed so much school and will more than likely catch up over time, so a missed few days/a week is unlikely to do much damage. Or because people will have suffered financially this year and may not be able to afford term time holidays next year?

I was just looking at some flights for next year which would cost around £1k for 4 of us, but the week before would be around £250!

I think different. I know the world is unfair and not every one even teachers aren't always saints. But at least I don't want to be the one to teach them that's the norm. Just because someone else is unreasonable, it's not ok for you to be unreasonable.

But then, I really don't have problem people taking term time holiday. People should make their own choice.

Pomegranatepompom · 30/05/2020 23:24

@BeakyFace disappointing if you can't see why parents want their children educated.
These threads tend to descend into bickering, unfair generalisations help.

Pomegranatepompom · 30/05/2020 23:24

*don't help.

SD1978 · 30/05/2020 23:26

I will. The lack of education and teaching given to mine during this time, means I am more than happy to do so. We have had to find out own work to do as the curriculum we were given to follow was so simple,it took less than an hour a day. If the school only expects an hour a day, then I can do that in a different location thanks.

Pomegranatepompom · 30/05/2020 23:29

@SD1978 We've had similar amounts of work. Envious of the schools doing more, I did email the head and ask if the work/interaction would increase this half term.

Macaroni46 · 30/05/2020 23:45

Maybe teachers could go on holiday during term time too ...

Somewhereinthesky · 30/05/2020 23:49

Pomegranate, BeakyFace's comment made perfect sense to me, tbh. I too, don't understand the parents who are outraged about school being shut can think it's fine to take them out term time when school is actually open and children are educated.

Pomegranatepompom · 30/05/2020 23:53

The comment was that parents just wanted childcare. That’s simply not true for everyone. It’s an unfair comment.

Somewhereinthesky · 31/05/2020 00:01

Well that part may be unfair, but her logic is quite right. If you are upset about school being shut and worried about children lacking education, you wouldn't think it's ok to take children out term time, just because it's been shut for longer because of something unpredictable like this.

Myothercarisalsoshit · 31/05/2020 00:08

You can choose to do whatever you want.
You will be fined and it will be the government that forces the LA that forces the school to do it. You can have your strop and you can kick up as much fuss as you want. Nobody will give a shit and you'll just make yourselves look like twats. Simple really.

Pomegranatepompom · 31/05/2020 00:09

It seems from the threads on here that some schools have been very supportive, some haven’t. I can quite see why families might feel that a week together would be beneficial especially if both parents have been working as well as trying to home school.

Bollss · 31/05/2020 00:18

Just because someone else is unreasonable, it's not ok for you to be unreasonable

How is it unreasonable to take your own child on holiday?

Bollss · 31/05/2020 00:21

If you are upset about school being shut and worried about children lacking education

Personally I'm worried about the socialisation aspect. I mean obviously we are all capable of teaching our children just as well as teachers using only bitesize and twinkle (so we have been told hundreds of times now) and the socialisation aspect isn't wholly relevant to term time holidays is it?

Nobody will give a shit and you'll just make yourselves look like twats. Simple really

Yeah. Someone probably said that to the women who wanted the vote too. Nothing ever changes if you dont challenge it.

Myothercarisalsoshit · 31/05/2020 00:22

Do what you want. Your child, your choice. Just spare us all the pearl clutching.

Bollss · 31/05/2020 00:23

You will be fined and it will be the government that forces the LA that forces the school to do it

I thought it was down the the discretion of firstly the head teacher and then the local authority? I hardly think central government have time to argue over whether to fine little Jimmy's mum for a week off in Spain.

Myothercarisalsoshit · 31/05/2020 00:26

Trust
So you're equating your epic struggle with your percieved lack of contact / zoom lessons / interactivity / schools opening safely (delete according to latest whinge) from an underfunded and unprepared education system in the midst of a global pandemic with the fight for universal suffrage?
Well OK then. You're a brave freedom fighter.

Myothercarisalsoshit · 31/05/2020 00:27

I thought it was down the the discretion of firstly the head teacher and then the local authority? I hardly think central government have time to argue over whether to fine little Jimmy's mum for a week off in Spain. Nope. You thought wrong. It's government policy. The head has no discretion at all.

Bollss · 31/05/2020 00:28

No I'm not. I'm just comparing the whiners of today with the whiners of yesteryear.

Myothercarisalsoshit · 31/05/2020 00:28

Blame Michael Gove.

Bollss · 31/05/2020 00:29

Really?

Do you think people will be more likely to take term time holidays next year?
Myothercarisalsoshit · 31/05/2020 00:40

The 'whiners' of yesterday had something to actually whine about, not indulging in ridiculous whataboutery and thinking anyone will actually care.
I stand by what I said, in terms of holidays a head has no discretion and it will be unauthorised and passed to the LA. The LA will then decide whether to fine or not. This is a government policy that came in with Michael Gove.

PorpentiaScamander · 31/05/2020 00:41

We've got a holiday booked for mid July. At the moment it's still showing as going ahead. If it gets cancelled then (based on the current policy on the agents website) we would be able to rebook anytime until mid October so we would probably have to take the DC out of school to go
It would only be a fri and a Monday though.

Artesia · 31/05/2020 07:45

I think employers now might be more relaxed about wfh with kids around

Afraid I am very doubtful about this. Employers are (generally) being much more tolerant and flexible about this at the moment, because it’s an unprecedented situation and there isn’t really any choice. But the reality, from an employer’s perspective, is that it’s not possible to work effectively while looking after small children, and once other childcare options are available I think people will be expected to use them.

Bollss · 31/05/2020 10:15

The LA will then decide whether to fine or not.

Not central government then? And heads do have discretion but ok.

And people clearly do care or this wouldn't be a thread.

Pomegranatepompom · 31/05/2020 10:52

Our school does not fine, DH is a governor, I’m sure he said this decision was made @ a governor meeting. We took DC out for a few days, the leave was authorised, the head said, they are not concerned by a few days for a holiday, they are more concerned about children with very poor attendance, often because parents couldn’t be bothered to take them to school 🙁
