Wales - you can drive 5 miles to visit family and friends

Am I missing something here?
Most people will have to travel more than 5 miles to see family.
I am in Wales and my Mum is in the midlands. I am desparate to see her as are my DC (older so would be ok with not cuddling), I am happy to drive 2 hours to sit in her garden. She is happy to drive 2 hours to sit in my garden.
I'm so bloody confused. Trying to do this right.

Not to drip feed but my Dad died just before lockdown and this would be the first time I've seen her in person since the funeral. She's totally miserable and a garden visit from her DGC would really help.

I am welsh but living in England. I have to say my otherwise obedient (living in Wales) parents have been driving across the border Last couple of weeks for socially distanced walks with me. Police are bothered about English coming into Wales but not at all the other way.

Doesn’t seem to be much sense to it because as you say much of Wales is very rural. Not sure why it’s more dangerous to say drive 15 miles rather than 5.

In your shoes I would just go and see her and just have an excuse ready if you get stopped (dropping off supplies to relative over the border).

I live in a city in Wales and it’s more than 5 miles to visit my parents who are in the same city!!

I am shopping for them as they are shielding and chatting from the front garden anyway but not the point.

Just noticed drakeford said 5 miles “ as a GENERAL rule”. Interpret that as you will!

I can't get to a supermarket or health care provider within 5 miles. I would have said that was fairly normal for very large parts of Wales.

I think it's advice though so you couldn't be fined for going more than 5 miles? But I'm not clear on that.

Sounds like it will be guidance rather than law. I literally haven't been off my street in two months (and that was to take DS for his jabs, haven't seen anyone else since February) but we'll be ignoring the 5 mile rule. Even my parents and sister who live on the same side of swansea aren't within 5 miles of each other.

We live in England, 2mins from Welsh border.
DH hasn't seen his parents since February, they live 15 miles away (in our nearest large town).
We will be going to see them for MILs birthday.

It’s ridiculous. I don’t have any family and very few friends within 5 miles. I have to drive 21 miles to get to a supermarket which I do regularly, so Mark whatsisface can blob off to be honest. That’s it for the next 3 weeks!?

Well no. I can’t stay cooped up and isolated any longer.
