Ds1 came home to us as did most students at the start of lockdown. He came on the train so he left the bulk of his stuff in his student house, 3.5h drive away. I'm wondering about how we're going to get it back as the contract on the house will end at the end of June and we will have to clear his stuff out. Even if we do the drive up and back in a day which is a long haul especially when there is nowhere to stop on the way, we would then be going in and out of another house for an extended period of time. Does anyone else have the same problem? Any suggestions?

Following with interest. It's 400 miles each way for us. Cannot be safely done in a day. I don't know what we're going to do.

wornout
Drive up, sleep on their floor / spare beds
drive back
the only bit missing is the nice meal out in their Uni town

I thought overnight stays are not allowed? But I have been thinking that actually.

Also... I work for the nhs so wondering if we could stay in a premier inn which are only open to nhs staff but this trip is not work related is it?

@wornoutoldbat you need to do what you need to do. If things need to be moved you cannot leave them. This is an essential task. It's perfectly legal to stay overnight wherever you please for goodness sake.

@ListeningQuietly, I thought I'd read somewhere that the advice was that the returning student has to self isolate as they are coming into a 'new' household.

Not sure how it works for people who self isolate in the same house but need to share a bathroom? 🤔

I’d love to send DD up the day before but they’re not allowing any overnight stays in the Halls just a 4 hour access slot, she’s not paying rent so it’s fair enough.

DD self-isolated for 2 weeks when she first returned as she was coming from Halls into the household of someone who is shielding.

We have a shared bathroom so she cleaned it after use.

DS didn't self isolate when he returned home. DH and I had the discussion about whether he should - including him sitting in the back of the car behind the passenger seat with the window open on the journey home. We decided that the risk was minimal and none of us are in a higher risk category nor do we come into contact with anyone who is. DS assured us that neither of his 2 housemates had any symptoms and nor did he.

Gosh, no I wasn't thinking we would self isolate on return, though I was planning to be more careful about going near to anyone who is in a higher risk group like my Dad.

I also wondered about staying in a Travelodge or something since DH is a doctor, but I think we can manage a day trip, so I can't really justify it.
