I feel like I'm the only one worried about the economy after all of this. Where are you all?

🙋here! My furlough is ending on 30th June. No job to go back to. Dreading the state of the job market. Been talking to recruiters and they tell me it's all going to be temp work going forward if there is anything. 😕

sprinklesone · 28/05/2020 17:36

Thank god! My eyes lit up when I saw your comment. I'm sorry about your position though :( you'll be fine. I'm just happy you don't think things will go back to normal.

I'm terrified. I've been on furlough since the end of March. Still not enough work for me to go back. And if I lose this job then it will be incredibly difficult to find another one while school is still part time!

WhiteChocTwix · 28/05/2020 17:47

@sprinklesone thank you x I hope something comes up soon. I will crack on and temp no problem. One of our best friends is also very likely to loose their job, 90 days consultation starts now, so worried about them 🙁not spending my furlough all at once, the next few months are going to be very unsettled to say the least. I'm very grateful to my DH who is WFH, crazy busy, key worker, not front line. I'm using my time to do everything else in the house so he can concentrate on keeping us afloat! We don't have any kids (sadly) so less mouths to feed. I worry about everyone with smalls. How is your situation?

DuesToTheDirt · 28/05/2020 17:48

DH and I are fine, but both DDs are graduating from uni soon, and I can't begin to imagine how they will find jobs. Even volunteering opportunities are likely to be hard to come by.

Do you read the news at all, OP? BBC, Tje Guardian, The Times, even the Daily Fail? I’m very surprised that you would feel at all alone in worrying about the economy! Sadly you are not. It’s very worrying for most of us.

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 28/05/2020 18:00

I’m trying to read as many forecasts as I can. My main source is The Guardian. The mood seems to me to change regularly, from very gloomy L shaped depression to a quick V shaped dip. But who knows which it’ll be.

Yes. I have been talking to some of my friends and one commented, if everyone just tried to work a bit harder for the government (talking about government letting care homes down etc) then everything would be ok. She said this to me , someone that was given a pay cut from the government. She's a teacher and has seen a yearly increase in her wages. I just couldn't believe it.

I'm unhappy about national jobs & financial security of most people.

PicsInRed · 28/05/2020 18:15

Retail is already being pushed over the precipice and the only reason car sales yards have been opened is that dealerships (and probably manufacturers) were about to go under too.

OP, I'm sure you've noticed pubs up for lease as well as cafes, restaurants, shops and other service providers having given up their leases, premises up for lease and shuttered.

When we actually open up, I'm afraid that the streets will look very different. The next on the block is the big shopping malls. Having lost too many tenants, some of these will also fail.

I see in The Times today, that a lenders body has written to the FCA, asking that mortgage holidays are not extended to 6 months. The less resilient lenders will be hurting - presumably experiencing cash flow pressures. This is an extremely concerning development.

I always wondered if I would see a black swan event. Here it is.

PasserbyEffect · 28/05/2020 18:30

Am worried some people will be much more badly affected than others.
My and DH's job feel safe enough (IT/Computing professionals with years of experience, and we've got savings). But entire economic sectors might disappear. And people who were already squeezed financially are likely to go under.
My hope is the government will step in and starts redistributing wealth (because let's face it, as long as there's enough food to go around, arbitrary artificial constructs like "money" are meaningless), but given their political color, am not holding my breath.
