Holiday in August - would you?

I know this has been done to death... We booked a holiday for 9th August in lanzarote back in November. We've paid £1000 deposit, and owe about £2000 still. We don't have to pay the rest until end of June. Jet2 say it's still going ahead and if we cancel now we lose our deposit. If it was a small deposit we would have cancelled a month ago. But all the advice we are getting is to put the balance as that's the only way we would get a full refund. However that's if they cancel it. Now the news says Spain will be allowing tourism from July, I'm thinking they probably won't cancel. If there's a 14 day quarantine here still when we return we won't want to go, but I think if Spain says we can, jet2 won't cancel and if we don't go we therefore won't get any money back. Would you want to go? If it's possible to go I think I still do... so torn...

It's a hard one because I would go if the quarantine here was lifted by then. But we don't know if it will be.

Can you move the holiday to next year? I've done it with my Tui holiday and just paid an admin fee.

Realitea · 26/05/2020 16:39

I’d definitely look in to moving it if you can.

chickedeee · 26/05/2020 16:43

Are you happy to fly?

I am due to go to Portugal in August- happy to go to the Country but I am not happy to fly.

I have lost count of how many colds I have caught on planes so I will hold off from flying for the foreseeable future.

Michael O'Leary said it himself social distancing and flying cannot be mentioned in the same sentence. Sad

sunglasses123 · 26/05/2020 16:52

I honestly think that the quarantine rules wont last long. To the end of June or possibly another 2-3 weeks after. I just think once people recognise that it will affect what they want to do during the summer I believe that people's views will change.

They were interviewing people coming off a flight and they were all agreeing it was a good idea whilst walking straight out of the airport! I suspect that if they needed to go into quarantine they might have a different view.

sunglasses123 · 26/05/2020 16:56

The aircraft and airports will either be a complete nightmare or you will go through smoothly and wonder what all the fuss was about.

I am OK with masks, hand gel, checking in hours in advance but I would hesitate with the 14 day quarantine on the way back.

Also, there might be a chance you get CV19 before you go and from what I can see insurance companies wont over you. Mine will if I get ill in the foreign country but not if I have to cancel before I leave.

Last November we booked a holiday to Cyprus for the end of August. We will be going unless FCO advises against, Cyprus will not let Brits in or there is a 2 week quarantine period upon return.

TheTigerKing · 26/05/2020 18:27

I've totally got my fingers crossed

I'm in the same situation as you except we paid our holiday as soon as we booked it. Im really hoping the 14 quarantine isn't happening by the time we fly out on the 28th Aug. Or we'll lose just over £2k.

BeTheHokeyMan · 26/05/2020 18:29

We have a holiday to Greece booked for August and will definitely be going if we can

transformandriseup · 26/05/2020 19:00

We should be going there too in August and if the flight is going ahead we will go as we won't be able to go next year. Fingers crossed for both of us.

KeepWashingThoseHands · 26/05/2020 19:48

Also have a booking the last 2 weeks of Aug.

Large party including shielded people and we booked flights/hotel separately. Accommodation said we can move to next year no problem but airlines problematic. At the moment they're only allowing changes if flying up to end of July. I'm also worried about price hikes next year if I get a voucher to rebook when the flight schedule is open.

I had insurance pre-COVID so will see my options in a few weeks. My concern is it won't be the holiday I wanted/paid for as not sure restaurants and other activities etc. will still be open.

LockdownLoppy · 26/05/2020 20:39

We should have been going to Spain in August for 2 weeks in a lovely villa with private pool. We have flights booked with Ryanair who probably will be flying but we are not going, it's just too soon for us, one of the dc has special needs and doesn't understand social distancing!
Fortunately for us, Ryanair has changed our flight time and have just contacted us to offer us a refund or change of flight - I jumped at the chance of the refund although I know it will take a while to arrive!
The villa owner has refunded our deposit and the airport parking and car hire and travel insurance have been cancelled with full refunds. I have booked a cottage for a week in West Wales !

TheTigerKing · 28/05/2020 13:35

Thanks everyone - I feel hopeful but torn at the same time. I hope we all get some kind of break soon!

Today they're saying about possibly giving people a test before they fly home to avoid the quarantine...

We are not sure what we will do either. Have flights booked for the end of August and hotel booked separately. Hotel we can cancel no issue but if flights are going ahead by then (who knows?) then we will lose the 1k for flights. Was thinking of changing the flights to next Easter somewhere closer to home. My fear is getting the virus whilst away and getting stuck there with whole family in isolation, it’s unlikely but could happen and also it won’t feel like a holiday so I’d rather be at home.

Titsywoo · 29/05/2020 19:13

Accommodation said we can move to next year no problem but airlines problematic. At the moment they're only allowing changes if flying up to end of July. I'm also worried about price hikes next year if I get a voucher to rebook when the flight schedule is open.

This was my issue but then I realised that the place we are going was nearly fully booked for next year already for the size of accommodation we need. So I had to move it (and pay the increase in cost!) and hope my flight is still cancelled but like the quoted poster BA are only refunding until end of July at this point and my flights are for 7th Aug. So frustrating!

TheWhalrus · 19/06/2020 12:58

I'm having a similar dilemma about flying to the UK in August. We're in Germany, and will be travelling with a 7-month-old DD to Southwest England. We're going to be staying with family, including my 71-year-old mother, owing to COVID-19 this will be only the second time DD and her grand-daughter have been able to meet.

Not at all concerned about getting COVID-19 in the UK or getting it here these days (apart from the odd outbreak, Germany is currently fairly safe). Very concerned about possibly catching it on the flight, and passing it on to my own mother. She's already saying it will be fine, but then again, she's also desperate to spend time with her granddaughter.

I didn't book anything yet, and even then money isn't a big deal. I was briefly considering driving instead, although I think that would be too much with our DD who doesn't particularly like car journeys.

Has anyone been on a flight post-COVID-19?

TheWhalrus · 19/06/2020 12:59

Sorry...DD and her grandmother

DBML · 19/06/2020 13:05

Completely happy to go abroad this summer.

Deelish75 · 19/06/2020 15:31

My two concerns would be

  1. outbreak in the resort/hotel and everyone having to stay in their rooms
  2. the U.K. government deciding that everyone coming back from where an outbreak has occurred, has to quarantine for 14days.

Personally I would be trying to move it to next year.

covidmonkey · 19/06/2020 15:49

We are going but our dates for flights have been changed twice so far by them. Not sure if they are going to cancel our flights.

CrackersAndCheesePlease · 19/06/2020 16:05

We r in a similar boat OP. 2 week all inclusive in Greece end August.

We have decided to pay the remaining balance. If it's cancelled we should get it all back.

i am worrying about lots of different factors, but don't know what to do really! The only thing I am not worrying about is catching covid, as we've all had it and we're not badly effected by it.
