Do you think we should be wearing face masks? And if so why aren't more people doing it?

That's all really...just interested in others opinions..

We got some from a friend. But how do others source them, if they are expensive to get hold of?

If a go asks you to wear one Do you ask would they supply it?

Musicforsmorks · 24/05/2020 18:17

A ‘GP’
Fuck this iPad.

Cerealkillers · 24/05/2020 18:25

Cloth masks yes, again only when you can’t stay 2m apart. But it will only work if more people do it, fully agree with ‘I protect you, you protect me’ There are still too many that think they’ll either never catch it or don’t care as they assume it will be very mild as they’re young, fit and healthy.

One of my colleagues refuses to wear PPE despite it being a requirement of the role she is in. But she also believes all the ridiculous conspiracy stories 🙄

Mintjulia · 24/05/2020 18:51

When I go back to work, I expect to wear a mask. Until then, no need. I don’t meet anyone unless I’m outside.

PineappleSmoothie · 24/05/2020 21:14

I think all should be wearing a washable cloth mask when outside the home but I have thought that since long before Covid 19, numerous times when flu/cold/norovirus season has been upon us.

I just think if we all cared enough to protect other people from our snotty pukey spittle emissions then we would in turn be protected from theirs.

I don't think people in this country can be arsed though, too fucking selfish and treatment free at the point of delivery makes too many NHS resource guzzlers think "whoo hoo, fuck it, fuck anybody else I might infect along the way".

Nation with plenty of selfish dirty bastards really. Look at the number of people on here and elsewhere around the internet who are proud that they don't wash their hands, even after taking a shit some of them. Why should I wash my hands, I ain't dirty they say. All human beings, for want of a better phrase, are "dirty", we are all walking biological soup and some of the bits floating in that soup are contagious or human transmission of disease wouldn't exist.

Big fan of hand washing and keeping your hands off your face too, as you can probably deduce.

pigoons · 24/05/2020 21:25

Not again. Loads of threads on this issue. No I don't think people should have to wear masks- it should be a matter of choice.

BTW PP are wrong. In scotland they have said consider wearing a mask if you cannot effectively socially distance - it is not mandatory.

Prokupatuscrakedatus · 24/05/2020 21:30

We have to wear masks on public transport, in shops, schools, at the GP and in other enclosed spaces + social distancing (1,50 m / don't breathe on people). They are called 'nose and mouth coverings' to clarefy where they have to go.
Everything from a scarf to full on medical is OK. I went to the pharmacy and bought N95 masks for my family. To those who say masks don't help - even a small reduction is better than none.

lifestooshort123 · 24/05/2020 21:48

I absolutely think we should but I think the government need to be enforcing it and I have no idea why they aren't. They've done a half arse campaign telling you how to make one from an old t shirt but have never said you MUST wear one. I don't get it

FHS, people moan when the gov treats us like children and then want to be dictated to about face masks! I choose to wear a mask inside shops to protect myself - can't you make up your own mind instead of waiting for Bojo to tell you what to do? Don't worry about those that don't wear them, that's their choice and as long as you have one on...

vanillandhoney · 24/05/2020 21:49

In enclosed spaces a face covering of some description should be mandatory - but that doesn't have to be a mask. A scarf or buff or similar should be perfectly acceptable.

If everyone wears one, it makes a difference, but if only 50% of people do I don't suppose it does. They protect others from the wearer rather than the other way around.

Msmcc1212 · 24/05/2020 22:03

I think, and I’m not an expert, from the bits of research Ive seen, the masks don’t protect you from the small aerosol particles in the air but they do limit the amount that you shed. For this reason, I think they should be compulsory in enclosed spaces. The 2m rule only protects you from larger droplets. In enclosed spaces, I believe, the smaller aerosol particles can hang around in the air for some time. The longer people spend in the space the more particles there are. The longer you spend in that enclosed space the higher your viral load and chances of picking it up. Remember it incubates for 5 days or more and you can be shedding virus particles and be totally asymptomatic.
For those reasons I think it makes sense to make masks compulsory in enclosed spaces in public places. The more people wear them the less aerosol in the air - I think. Like I say, I’m not an expert but have done a bit of personal research.

Russellbrandshair · 24/05/2020 22:06

No. They get saturated with sweat and moisture after about 20 mins rendering them pointless. So unless you have hundreds to change many many times a day I can’t see the point.

Prokupatuscrakedatus · 24/05/2020 22:19

If been wearing my mask every day for quite a while now and it gets neither wet nor sweatty, but it has to be cleaned properly

bulletjournalbilly · 24/05/2020 22:39

No way will I be wearing one. Not going to be muzzled like a dog FFS!

Nihiloxica · 24/05/2020 23:11

Nation with plenty of selfish dirty bastards really

You should really stay as far away from the rest of the filthy humanity that disgust you as possible, on a permanent basis.

It's really terrible that this virus isn't dangerous enough to kill more of us so you would have fewer people to feel.superior to.

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 24/05/2020 23:24

I bought cloth masks and have been wearing one in shops, so has DP. Straight in the washing machine after wearing. Neither of us use public transport, and not wearing them outdoors. Most people where we are (Scotland) are wearing something, often a scarf, bandana, or one of those snood things people wear for cycling - I have also seen men in masks that look like they are for doing welding or similar.

Dinosauratemydaffodils · 24/05/2020 23:29

I have ptsd and haven't found one I can tolerate. Have ordered some more rigid ones from playmobil along with presents for my daughter's birthday to see if I can wear them. Around here, hardly anyone is wearing them.

Bluewarbler27 · 25/05/2020 00:00

N0 I don’t think you Should have to.

DarkMutterings · 25/05/2020 00:49

Living in asia, wearing one of second nature. Many places like banks and POs don't let you in without one so always carry one in my bag - it's a habit like reusable shopping bags, after a while you just always have one with you. Same with hand sanitizer and getting your temperature checked as you walk in somewhere. It's really not a big deal, I just don't get the angst in the UK about it.

SudokuBook · 25/05/2020 01:10

I tried. No one else bothered and it made me paw at my face more. Don’t bother any more.

highmarkingsnowbile · 25/05/2020 01:17

What Nihil said.

Kokeshi123 · 25/05/2020 04:52

I prefer to stick to social distancing and handwashing. If I leave the house I take a flask of hot water and have a small washing up bowl, soap and cold water in the back of the car so I can wash my hands properly after carrying out errands instead of waiting until I get home.

Hand washing is great and all and of course we should also be washing our hands. But hand washing doesn't actually prevent many infections, because the virus is spread most efficiently through aerosolized droplets that are breathed in---surface transmission appears to be difficult and rare. The advice given early in the pandemic "Don't bother with a mask, just keep your hands clean" was wrong, which is why the advice of the CDC and others has changed.

whatswithtodaytoday · 25/05/2020 05:21

I would, but the two I have ordered from different places haven't arrived yet (after at least two weeks).

In Italy the government are sending out masks - so many that a friend here is having some sent to her from Italy as her family there don't need them all. If masks are to be mandatory they will need to be government supplied.

Spikeyball · 25/05/2020 06:56

I've not warn because I haven't been anywhere I can't keep 2m away. Ds wouldn't be able to wear one.

SnuggyBuggy · 25/05/2020 07:03

I'm not against the idea but until I'm given guidance on what sort of mask to wear and when to wear it I'm not prepared to spend the money. I see loads of homemade ones for sale but do they really make a difference?

SquirmOfEels · 25/05/2020 07:17

do they really make a difference?

Yes, because the aim is to contain your exhalations. The higher spec the mask, the more it will, contain. But the biggest difference is between wearing nothing and wearing anything over the right part of the face.

But remember, this sort of debate is pretty useless now. Just think what a loving father might do an follow your instincts.
