Who is still catching the virus

LivingOnAPear · 24/05/2020 10:14

With around 3000 new confirmed cases yesterday I am interested to know which groups of people are mainly testing positive for the virus.
Eg is it health workers, other key workers who have had to work with the public such as supermarket staff. Children in school, people in care homes or general public who don’t fit into these categories are supposed to be staying at home.

Has anyone seen any data about this?

A colleague at work is now on a ventilator having caught the virus accompanying her neighbour on a visit to her husband in hospital. Not sure how they were allowed anywhere near him!

Us. We found out today. Dc4 tested positive and so did I. I'm a key worker and dc had been in nursery but with a different teacher everyday which was bollocks. And now we have it. DC became ill before me so the only place they could have got it is from nursery.

Sunshinegirl82 · 24/05/2020 18:52

They do explain in the daily briefing everyday how many tests have been carried out together with the number of positive tests.

Laniakea · 24/05/2020 18:54

Even if it's usually two weeks,

^ 'usually' i.e. the median is 5 days. But don't let facts get in the way ... I'm sure your VE Day Spike is just over the horizon.

Bramblebear92 · 24/05/2020 18:54

The 3 people I know who've definitely had it are all nurses. I imagine most are picking it up in hospital or care homes now, with a small amount of community transmission accounting for the rest.

ToffeeYoghurt · 24/05/2020 19:02

@Laniakea I very obviously made it clear I wasn't certain of the usual incubation period. The question mark I added when discussing it gives that away.

I'd be delighted if there isn't a VE Day spike or any other.
The OP asked why cases were increasing. I made a few suggestions as to why that might be the case.
In any event I don't believe VE Day will make much difference. I suspect most people continued to respect social distancing that day. If we see increases it's far more likely down to people going back on crowded public transport and the hundreds of thousands unchecked, non quarantined international travellers.

So a very important reason why we need to take measures to lower the R rate before ending lockdown.
If we want NHS routine work to restart and be able to function normally and safely.

Ponoka7 · 24/05/2020 19:10

People aren't supposed to be staying home. They are supposed to limit what they can, in terms of social interaction with others.

There's vast amounts of people in work and who need to travel on public transport for shopping, childcare, appointments etc.

We don't how infectious mail, shopping etc is. In Tesco yesterday, I had a few people coughing around me. We've got gangs of youths hanging around and not practicing social distancing. People are starting to meet up again, some never stopped. Some people will get it again and again. My DD had to refuse to serve someone who put a £5 half way into their mouth and then went to pay with it.

Sunshinegirl82 · 24/05/2020 19:12

The rate of transmission in the community is very low. R continues to be higher in care homes and hospitals which is pulling the overall R value up.

ToffeeYoghurt · 24/05/2020 19:15

Is it true there's a two week lag in data?
I was reading the daily figures announced are often two weeks out of date. Is that still the case?

Quarantino · 24/05/2020 19:18

I'm interested to. The link above
www.gov.uk/guidance/coronavirus-covid-19-information-for-the-public
indicates that of today's 2409 positive tests, almost exactly one-third were 'pillar 1' (people in hospital, PHE labs and health and care workers) and two-thirds were essential workers, their households and others. I would be interested to know more about which jobs positive testers do, and how many people not going out to work were testing +ve too.

Eggybread sorry to hear that. Hope you get only a v mild case.Is it possible you got infected first but didn't show symptoms until later (just wondering really!)? Are you going to be ok self-isolating from work/nursery etc?

Care homes and hospitals

Harrykanesrightsock · 24/05/2020 19:33

I think some people who are at home are unaware of what is going on to keep the country going. There is still a huge amount of people at work including me and my DH. Neither working fir NHS but essential non the less My DH works at a food distribution centre with 3000 people. It’s a huge site but with warehouses, transport, maintenance and office staff. The have actually had very few cases and are very responsible but they are risking themselves every day to get food out.

Dancingmuppet73 · 24/05/2020 20:03

We've followed all the rules only going out for daily exercise and the supermarket and still managed to catch it, I assume Dh caught it at the supermarket as he showed symptoms first. He's a key worker but works from home so can't be from that. He tested negative but then my dd started with covid toes and she tested positive and she must have caught it from him as she hasn't been anywhere.

Soph88888 · 24/05/2020 20:26

Apparently more than 20% of public who caught it was in hospital
