When will they actually announce if schools definitely do reopen on June 1st?

We know the plan and the ambition by the govt to do this but they haven’t actually confirmed (as far as I’m aware) this will definitely happen. When will they actually let us know if it’s going to happen?!

My understanding is it's next Friday the 28th May...

Wow, thought it would be earlier.

I saw the govt make positive spins on the sage advice.

The government line was 1st June was the first possible date that schools and nurseries could open.

There will be (yet another) guidance document published on 26 May.

The only way to know what arrangements will be in place (if any) for your child's school or nursery is to speak to them.

28th May. Giving schools 1 working day to make sure they have it all in place. Obviously most will already be as ready as they can be, but still...

I really hate the uncertainty and ridiculously short notice. It makes it impossible to make proper plans.
Our DCs are year 2 and 3 so not in the first cohort scheduled to return, but supposedly there's an ambition to get all of them back before the summer holidays...

When I discussed this with my boss, he was very sceptical this would be feasible (or desirable, from a safety perspective. I guess he was trying - and failing - to picture how all the social distancing guidances for workplaces could even be followed in a primary school)
Me and DH are lucky our employers are reasonable, and happy for us to WFH "till further notice" (next 6 months at least)

In absence of clear information from the government re: long term plans for schools, we have (literally) put our money on schooling becoming a part-time thing for the foreseeable future (bought two laptops for home learning purposes). But it would be nice to know for sure where we stand!

28th - they’ve said they’ll be issuing further guidance on the next steps of easing lockdown..

Our nursery seem adamant they are opening but I think in reality they just have to wait & see!

I can't see it happening until 15th which is going to go down like a lead balloon with the parents who haven't realised it's maybe the 1st not definite

They did say 1st June at the earliest.

May 28th. Many schools have already said they won’t be back until 8th or later as they will need more time than that to get ready.

28th May. Even if the government are still aiming for 1st June, don't forget schools will still have some say and that will depend on settings, staff, children. Some children may return different days, it might be part time and some classes may not return at all for now.

Gosh a whole weekend for schools to communicate with families

Tbh I think it’s a poor show if schools that have agreed to open aren’t ready on 1st June. They’ve had weeks to put a plan in place. I work at a large 3 form entry primary and they’re ready and raring to go. Teachers and support staff have been in getting classrooms sorted and SLT have been meeting and planning since lockdown. If other schools haven’t done this why not? My friend said today in her school they need 1st and 2nd to get ready and sort everything out. I don’t get it.

Did schools assume that kids were never coming back? Unless they actually don’t want them in some cases which is more likely.

The schools are ready Cherrypie but they still need the govt to confirm that "the science" says go.

@Cherrypie32 there have been 41 changes to the guidance issued about schools reopening. Maybe ‘schools’ assumed that any planning may be pointless after having to change so often.

Ours have told us no kids will go back before June 8th

@Cherrypie32 I guess because all schools are different? Some schools will have all staff available whereas others will have large numbers shielding and still be trying to arrange cover plus some supply agencies have gone bust I’m fairly sure. Some schools some will have a very small amount of pupils coming in vs a large amount. Every school has different facilities available - sinks in classrooms, playground space.
There’s so many variables - my school isn’t opening until 2nd week. The government said 1st June earliest, not “every school in the country MUST open on the 1st”

I've already had emails from both (secondary) schools saying they will not be open on 1st June.

Bully for you!

A 3 form entry primary will have plenty of spare rooms and staff to split the R, 1 and 6 pupils, whereas a single form entry, or one with mixed age classes will have much less flexibility. Our local KS 1 only primary school has 3 classrooms and 4 teachers which to split 65 children. An impossible task. The teachers are getting enough shit thrown at them on here without actual teachers doing it.
