This is probably a stupid question but...

Are quarantine and self isolation the safe thing?

Trying to make sense of this 14 day quarantine for travellers thing: it sounds like you should be completely cut off from other people and not go anywhere but then it also says:

The Home Office said the proposed accommodation will need to meet necessary requirements, such as a hotel or a private address with friends or family

Or would presumably mean your friends or fam have to all go into isolation with you?

I don't really mind being slapped in a hotel for two weeks when we get home but I certainly haven't got two weeks of hotel bill at London rates lying around. Unless I'm being thick I'm still finding it confusing!

You can isolate within a household. Not sure what’s right here, but bedroom, en-suite and not leaving is advice generally.

It’s a farce anyhow. Just introduced to show we’re doing something, but not enforced.

Fallsballs · 23/05/2020 09:41

It’s about two months too late imo.

Lemons1571 · 23/05/2020 09:49

Someone on the news said it was ridiculous that incomers did all this at the airport, then it is perfectly ok for them to hop on the Heathrow / Gatwick express and then the tube to get to their destination. I agree that it’s just done to make it look as if the government are doing something, when actually they’re doing nothing.

DPs house has an en suite but we'd still be sharing the kitchen and needing the use the laundry etc. I'm worried about putting DPs address down and then at the last moment them saying it's not allowed as two other people in the house and pushing us into a really expensive hotel which we can't afford!

But the government aren’t trying to eradicate the virus are they? They’re trying to slow it down.

Yes covid could be transmitted in the journey to a place of isolation or someone within a household but that’s far less people than most people would come into contact with over two weeks so drastically reduces any further spread.

I don’t think it’s that hard to understand.

KuckFnows · 23/05/2020 09:53

Oh ffs

Cornettoninja · 23/05/2020 09:55

@Turnandfacethenamechange I think it’s fine to isolate within a household and then if anyone shows symptoms the whole household isolates for 14 days.

Gee, thanks.

Cornettoninja that sounds sensible... hopefully that will turn out to be the case. Unless we catch it on the plane home the odds of us bringing it back from here are pretty low as there are only 7 cases left I think. I also read somewhere they're considering some sort of exemption between Aus and the UK but I don't think that was on a reputable site.

Sorry @turnandfacethenamechange, that was prompted by other comments about why it’s a requirement at all rather than your question about logistics.

Pure speculation on my part but I suspect that travel requirements might change a lot at short notice over the coming year based on various reported numbers. It’s good to prepare but I think it’s best to be prepared that requirements could change even whilst you’re actually travelling.

Turnandfacethenamechange · 23/05/2020 10:13

Ah no worries Cornettoninja

I suspect this quarantine thing is more of a "nudge" (discourage travel => get the contagion numbers down) than a genuine attempt to make the borders 100% airtight.
And yes, it does sound very similar to self-isolation, as the government is picking the cheapest approach to implement something quarantine-like.

I also think it makes sense, even though it ruins (what was left of) my plans for this summer (to be honest, I had already 99% written them off, but still... I stings)
