My ds's secondary school (year 10) teachers sound like they're pleased that they might be going back

I've been getting the impression from MN and the news that teachers really are not happy about a return to school any time soon. We've not had anything official, but all the emails and work my ds has been sent this week has had little comments that they are really hoping to see him soon. It's really lifted my spirits tbh. Anyone else getting a similar vibe?

I think it’s probably just the teachers being kind and positive. If you’ve not heard officially that’s probably the case.

AStarSoBright · 22/05/2020 00:02

Definitely not. I spoke to the form tutor yesterday, she thinks going back is a mistake as it won't be education as we expect it to be.

alwien · 22/05/2020 00:12

I'm a teacher, I think year 10 need to be back ASAP they are the ones who will be most disadvantaged by all of this. I think schools returning is a positive thing and I am happy about it.

alwien · 22/05/2020 00:14

Oh and my school are making plans for yr 10 to return ASAP. It won't be 'normal' teaching for a long time but there will definitely be a benefit for them attending.

clopper · 22/05/2020 00:18

I’m a teacher and I‘m happy to go back.

converseandjeans · 22/05/2020 00:31

I teach secondary school and miss seeing my students. I would also be happy to go back into school so long as we implement things like one way system/staggered lunch/regular hand washing etc.
I think it's nice teachers are sending positive messages. Most of us actually like young people. We wouldn't do the job if we didn't!?

effingterrified · 22/05/2020 03:28

According to large-scale surveys of teachers, only 5% of UK teachers think going back is a good idea, versus 85% who think it is a bad idea and cannot be done safely.

In other research, nearly half of comments on social media on the topic of coronavirus were found to be made by foreign disinformation bots.

I'd be very sceptical of anyone claiming to be a teacher and claiming they wanted to return on 1 June, as that's so completely unrepresentative of the profession as a whole.

I'd be particularly sceptical of a thread with lots of people claiming their children's teachers or themselves as teachers were all desperate to go back and thought it was a great idea.

Just saying.

wherestheotherone · 22/05/2020 03:44

Yes we have a mix. Primary generally want our children back to school. They have a great system in place now for our children who go for childcare (my DC is going back so we can work more hours) and they are very confident that they can keep everyone as safe as possible.

Secondary school also want the children back in as it's really hard to teach from home. My DC is not year 10 but speaking to his teachers this week they want to be allowed to get a few more of them back in. Even just a few days to roll out work and check on the kids.

So far every GP on the TV who has been asked about schools says it's as safe as likely to be for the DC to go back.

One said yesterday that so far there are more child deaths from flu (40 a year in UK 😯😔) than covid. We don't hear about that!

wherestheotherone · 22/05/2020 03:46

I am a human, I am not a bot 😂

ChipsAreLife · 22/05/2020 03:53

Mine is only at primary but we had have very encouraging and positive emails from our school with the plans to go back. They acknowledge it will of course be different but they're looking forward to having the kids back.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 22/05/2020 05:59

My DS's head teacher seems very positive. She keeps saying she can't wait for the children to go back. She might just be being polite, I don't know.

I'm not a bot, I've been on here for years.

GlennRheeismyfavourite · 22/05/2020 06:11

Year 10 back on 15th June here🤞🤞🤞

LolaSmiles · 22/05/2020 06:17

There's a difference between thinking it would be great to go back with a half baked plan and thinking would be lovely to see our students again.

Regardless of what teachers think about government plans, that's totally separate from our care for our students.

For what it's worth, I also think Year 10 should be back on a flexible timetable of blended learning: some lessons on site in a safe way and proper remote learning to consolidate.

Whattodo121 · 22/05/2020 06:26

I’m a secondary teacher, I really miss the kids and want to go back. Am not a bot, I promise!

exLtEveDallas · 22/05/2020 06:36

DD is Y10 and the contact we have had from school seems to suggest that they will only be going back for 1:1 meetings with form tutors and small group discussions with subject leaders - no mention of actual teaching.

Risotto4tea · 22/05/2020 06:43

My daughter went back this week (all keyworker children encouraged to attend) this is primary thou. All teachers have been attending throughout for keyworker children. all are working from the first of June to teacher the years going back. Official communication is they are all happy to do so and impressions from speaking to them exactly the same. We have had a detailed plan of how the school will run and I feel they have really done all they can.

Chosennone · 22/05/2020 07:41

I can't wait to go back and see year 10. We're looking to do one to one tutoring, very small group sessions for option classes, some mental health workshops.

I trust our SLT (not our govt) to ensure this is managed as safely as possible.

Murrfect · 22/05/2020 07:51

I’m a teacher and really want to go back and that’s despite seeing my students through video lessons every day.

I recognise the issues involved in terms of passing on infection and I’m not returning except to do my shifts for key workers children.

But still, just as me, I genuinely want to return and teach my Y10 and see my Y9 tutor group, all my classes. I think because they want to so much. (Although some of my tutor group are going to get a talking to and might have some regrets about that) I do quite like no commute and yoga at break time, but I did go into teaching as I genuinely like being with teenagers and seeing them progress and learn. Crazy huh!

stuckindoors77 · 22/05/2020 07:52

I'm a Primary SEND teacher, I'm really looking forward to going back and seeing all my kids again. I'm crossing my fingers that as many as possible can come back in June. A few parents don't want the place but most are quite keen.

SmileEachDay · 22/05/2020 07:53

I think the 1st of June is not the right decision.

I will always be positive about seeing the children.

Both those things can be true.

bathsh3ba · 22/05/2020 07:56

The Head of our primary school is sounding a cautious note but my daughter's Y6 teacher is being very enthusiastic about the possible return. I think Heads maybe have to more circumspect but it's quite understandable that teachers' views might vary.

generalh · 22/05/2020 07:58

I am ready to return. Others I work with are scared. I am in Wales so god knows when we will back. I think Year 10 and,if there is a 6th form, Year 12 need to be back as soon as possible.
I am worried that my class in Year 10 will struggle with the content we need to get through plus the 2 oral exams.

Everytimeref · 22/05/2020 08:04

Happy to return, just hope the parents understand that I can't guarantee that the students will social distance or stay in their bubble. If the parents are happy with the risk, then I am prepared to take the risk.

beckypv · 22/05/2020 08:06

My son’s school have been really thorough about the return of year 6. The headteacher even posted a YouTube video last night for the children which showed her walking around the school and explaining about all the differences there will be. I feel very positive about it.

PenguinIce · 22/05/2020 08:36

I have had an email from my year 10 dc’s school to say nothing has changed and no plans for children to go back to school. They are planning a phone call for each year 10 student before the summer holidays and are hopeful it could even be a video call!

I think it is the difference between schools that is most annoying me, how can some schools be managing this so well whilst others handle it so badly!
