Supermarket Queuing

How much longer do you think this will go on for? Massive queue at the local supermarket today, lots of people looking more and more fed up.... how long do you think before this is relaxed somewhat? Will there be quick queues for small basket shops?

I work early mornings in a supermarket when I leave the queues are horrendous, just don't understand why people queue this much when they could spread out and go when it's quieter and just stroll in, taking your kids to stand in the sun for ages is stupid!
I get some people can only go at certain times due to work etc, but all of them?

milkysmum · 21/05/2020 05:57

I have not had to wait in a cue once yet! I don't know how I've managed it really as I do go shopping honestly. Shops I've used included Asda, Lidl and Aldi. I tend to shop later in the evening though as I'm at work during the day.

linelgreen · 21/05/2020 06:31

I would have thought a booking system would help. Something along the way click and collect works you could book a time online and then just turn up at that time. This would perhaps be a solution as it would spread customers throughout the day.

Most supermarkets struggled with their on-line shopping systems, which account for around 6% of all shops. I can't see them investing £ millions on a booking system for physical shops.

KatherineJaneway · 21/05/2020 07:36

Depends on the supermarket. I tend to go to smaller shops every few day with a very early morning trip to the supermarket when it is needed.

LIZS · 21/05/2020 07:44

I'd rather queue and have more space to shop. Recent queues have been shorter than at initial lockdown.

ittooshallpass · 21/05/2020 07:50

I haven't queued since the first couple of weeks of lockdown. I have changed the time and day I go though. I've switched to a midweek evening rather than a Saturday morning.

BewilderedOwl · 21/05/2020 08:00

I dont mind the queue, I've not had to wait that long to get into a shop. However, what does bother me is people not keeping an appropriate distance once they get in the shop. What's the point in keeping shoppers apart outside when some people blatantly flout it once inside.

Floatyboat · 21/05/2020 08:04

People always seem to be surprised when Asda is shit.

TheAlphaandtheOmega · 21/05/2020 08:12

Waitrose usually has a queue but when you get in there it is very pleasant with lots of room, I haven't bothered to go to Asda as it is shit at the best of times and I can't imagine that has changed

Uptheduffagai · 21/05/2020 08:31

I'm finding it absolutely ridiculous now. I get coughed and sneezed on constantly in supermarket queues whereas I could just whip round a supermarket away from other people. I have 3 very young children and standing half an hour in queue when they're already ratty under normal circumstances is impossible which means I've had to organise childcare to do a shop this entire time which again defeats the purpose.

Also theres always queues. Whether I go a 7am, midday or night time. How much longer can this ridiculousness go on for. We all go in and touch the same things anyway! Still pass in aisles unexpectedly. I can't imagine the difference is that measurable.

OnlyThenWhen · 21/05/2020 08:31

I'm not surprised by Asda. More annoyed as it's the nearest one to walk to, and I don't drive! I'd much rather use Morrisons or Tesco or even Sainsburys, but they are a little more out of the way.

ssd · 21/05/2020 11:42

Try to get an Iceland delivery, free over £35 and good deals too. They have lots of brands, fruit, veg, meats etc. Just don't do what I did and get too many pizza's and greggs sausage rolls Blush

Sparklingbrook · 21/05/2020 12:03

I went into my local town earlier. There was no queue at Boots, Wilkinson’s, Morrison’s or Waitrose as I walked past.

Titsywoo · 21/05/2020 12:57

I go to the big m&s in my local town centre. Free parking at the moment and never a queue to get in or at the till. Yes its more expensive but actually not hugely so.

ifonly4 · 21/05/2020 13:24

We have a Lidl and Tesco's very close to eachother which regularly have queues. I think it's quieter after 6pm but that doesn't work for our lifestyle and now shopping for others.

Tootsey11 · 21/05/2020 13:45

Queueing is pointless when everything goes to pot inside. I know the shops have to adhere to the rules but surely they see that no-one is sticking to rules inside. Was in Asda last Friday, no queue, straight in with trolley. Once in, when you got to the end of each aisle it was bedlam.

countrygirl99 · 22/05/2020 08:24

I haven't queued since the beginning of lockdown and that was only a few minutes.

Floatyboat · 22/05/2020 09:42

Queueing is pointless when everything goes to pot inside

That obviously isn't true. It reduces surges so reduces the number of people you may contact compared to when having no controls. It can't remove all risk but does remove some. If people adhered to guidance inside that would be better but would also make things slower and make the queue longer.

PumpkinP · 22/05/2020 10:16

Must depend where you live as I had to queue to get into wilkos last week and the queue was pretty big this was around 4pm, can't go later as they shut at 5pm now.

Sparklingbrook · 22/05/2020 10:33

There were some huge queues for all the supermarkets a few weeks ago around here. 30 minute wait was not unusual.

RhymingRabbit3 · 22/05/2020 10:34

I get coughed and sneezed on constantly

Really constantly? I dont think a stranger has ever coughed on me in my whole life, let alone constantly from 2m away on a hot sunny day. You must be incredibly unlucky.

mrscampbellblackagain · 22/05/2020 10:43

I tend to go to m&s as very small queue if any. However, so many couples. Was chatting to cashier about it and she said the most abusive customers are men aged 50-70 who insist on accompanying their wives to the shops. I do wonder if with some men it is a control thing? I know some maybe carers but on Tuesday I think I was the only 'single person in the shop, everyone else was with someone and the men were generally just stood in the middle of the aisle with a trolley blocking people getting by.

It is very annoying how people just can't follow the rules.
