Baby had temp last night, now fine, self isolate?

Morning all , I've had zero sleep so forgive me... my 12mo was fine yesterday but woke at 12pm vvv hot, temp 40. Stripped her off (was quite warm in room), opened window, cold drinks etc. Gave Calpol twice through the night and her temp did come down in the early hours (then my toddler woke up, yay)! It's 36.7 now. Of course I will respond accordingly to any other signs of illness... I'm not 100% what the cause of the temp is/was yet.

assuming she's fine when she wakes up/rest of today - do our household all need to self isolate for 14 days now? Thanks

She woke at 12am/midnight, not 12pm (toddler climbing on me whilst typing)!

If she is fine today then I wouldn't say you needed to isolate. Babies have temps for SO many reasons. Is she teething?

SockQueen · 20/05/2020 08:59

Yes, the guidance is clear. "Teething" is not an excuse for a 40 degree fever.

As the owner of 2 small DC who've had temps but otherwise been fine, causing us to isolate, I get the frustration, but please don't try to find reasons why the rules don't apply to you.

EezyOozy · 20/05/2020 09:00

I'm not @sockqueen, Just asking for advice

I think I would isolate for 14 days. Dd (3.5) had a similar temp just for an evening and was absolutely fine after it went down. But as I think small children don’t have many symptoms I played it safe.

Neither dp or I had any symptoms after then, so it was probably a weird toddler temp thing, but better to be safe than sorry!

EezyOozy · 20/05/2020 09:05

@Emlou07 - she's always teething on and off so it's very possible, I couldn't say for certain this was the reason for the v high temp though.

Yes. Isolate.

EezyOozy · 20/05/2020 09:05

Looks like we're in for 14 days then ! Thanks for the replies

I'd isolate, it could be teething but I have heard from family working with covid that in healthy individuals it can present as a fever at night that can disappear in the day.

Northernsoullover · 20/05/2020 09:43

Does teething actually cause a fever? I was always told that teething causes nothing but teeth!
Bear in mind that around the time teeth erupt maternal antibodies are on the wane..
Be very careful before dismissing childhood illnesses as 'teething'. There are articles on Google Scholar about this. It might pay to research it properly before telling anyone its just teething.

Basilandparsleyandmint · 20/05/2020 09:54

I would actually seek proper medical advice - ring 111 and then you will have a real answer as to if you have to isolate rather than accepting the opinions of people like Sockqueen who are actually a bit rude.

Emlou07 · 20/05/2020 11:43

I was speaking from my own experience. My youngest would spike a fever of 40 whenever she had a fever. 39.5/40 was her 'normal'. And teething did cause a fever for her..

mademewonder · 20/05/2020 11:52

You don't need to ring 111. You need to isolate for 14 days

Mummypig2020 · 20/05/2020 12:16

It’s been extremely hot, are you sure it wasn’t sun stroke?

SockQueen · 20/05/2020 14:00

It could be sunstroke (but you'd expect them to be more unwell). It could be teething (but unlikely to cause a fever that high). It could be any other random illness. It could be Covid. Nobody here can tell you, and 111 can't actually tell you either, though they may be able to arrange testing. The current guidance is that ANYONE with a fever should isolate, regardless of if you think there might be another cause or not. www.nhs.uk/conditions/coronavirus-covid-19/check-if-you-have-coronavirus-symptoms/

Sorry if this is considered rude, but this is far from the first post I've seen on MN or various other groups saying "I/my kid has a temp but I'm sure it's teeth/tonsillitis/sunstroke/hot blankets, do I really need to isolate?" Unfortunately the guidance does not differentiate and is very broad, and yes, lots of people will be isolating who didn't really need to, so it's understandable to try to find a way out, but this is the best way to keep safe.

We self isolated back in March when our baby had a short but unexplained temp.

She was never ill but we did it all the same.

coffeeandjuice · 20/05/2020 14:13

@namechangeonehundred Thanks for sharing that info about the temp in night but not the day. I had that a few months ago and figured I was just a bit odd!

Sorry to hear it sounds like you're isolating for two weeks. That's tough with babies

DownWhichOfLate · 20/05/2020 14:25

That is interesting about the fever in the night. I had one night when I woke, drenched in sweat, feverish. Completely normal in the morning. Thought it might have been a hormonal thing but maybe not then.

TheGreatWave · 20/05/2020 15:45

Advice if child is under 5 is to ring 111

www.nhs.uk/conditions/coronavirus-covid-19/coronavirus-in-children/

OP please follow the actual current advice rather than people on here. As to what happens next it is for 111 to advise accordingly.

MiniMaxi · 20/05/2020 15:49

Hope she feels ok today OP. As others have said, it’s not teething, which despite what a lot of people (including my son’s nursery teachers) think, can’t cause a fever. Maybe a slightly raised temp up to 38, but definitely not 40.

Basilandparsleyandmint · 20/05/2020 16:40

Exactly the Greatwave good advice 😊

EezyOozy · 20/05/2020 22:07

Update - temp has been normal since this mid-afternoon (had a spike at lunchtime though) and she actually fed herself a bit of tea quite happily early eve.

Did a video consult with GP earlier and she thinks it may be a side effect of (massive drip feed, im sorry, just wasn't in my head when I posted) the 12m vaccines inc MMR, which she had 9 days ago. I hadn't joined the dots. She has also developed a sparse pimply rash today (not Kawasaki looking said Dr) which ties in.* So I've to monitor and get in touch if anything worsens . And advice was to self isolate 14 days even though it's most likely connected to vaccines x
*of course it could also be viral
