Europe opening for the summer?

Still very tentative, but it looks like some parts of Europe are keen to have a summer season. The question is, who will go?

I think my insurance covers covid but what’s the point - they’re not going to be transporting us home and I don’t fancy being in a hospital outside the UK, it would be terrifying anyway without the language barrier.

Hoping the airlines will still allow us to change flights even if they are flying and we can’t get a refund. Accommodation would then be a sunk cost. But really hoping Uk holds its nerve and keeps the fco advice.

Seems massively wrong to open holidays before sending schools back

tootyfruitypickle · 19/05/2020 15:25

I would def book a uk hol though if it’s allowed .

Drivingdownthe101 · 19/05/2020 15:32

As we’re going to stay with the IL’s I wouldn’t even be that bothered if they don’t fly us back. We’ll just stay there for the summer.

To those saying they have full insurance: Won't that be voided if the govt still has advice against all non-essential travel?

That said, I'm cautiously optimistic that some travel may be possible this summer. Greece in particular seems very keen to salvage at least some of its summer season. Infection rates are dropping all over Europe and restrictions are being lifted. Will be interesting to see how air travel can cope with social distancing however.

HairyFloppins · 19/05/2020 15:43

Insurance will only be valid if the FCO stops the travel ban. Places like AXA still offer insurance for COVID treatment but not cancellation because of it, but not until FCO lifts the ban.

chocolatesaltyballs22 · 19/05/2020 16:11

Don't think anyone is suggesting they would travel against FCO advice - I wouldn't, anyway. There's a good chance that advice will change soon I would think.

Yeah I’m pretty sure most people are saying yes they’ll go, if the rules at the time allow it.

tootyfruitypickle · 19/05/2020 16:12

Flights won’t go if travel ban , hoping it stays !

HairyFloppins · 19/05/2020 16:16

If my flight is leaving and the ban has been lifted I will be going.

delilahbucket · 19/05/2020 16:16

Absolutely going if we can and our insurance will cover if we get ill while there. Private villa in a small village in Italy, and we'd planned to mostly self cater anyway.

Delatron · 19/05/2020 16:24

Yes, if advice is that it’s ok to travel and allowed then I’d go. We have a holiday booked to Lanzarote in October. Wasn’t expecting to go and listening to all the doom and gloom ‘no holidays until 2021’!

However, that was based on other countries not wanting British tourists. If they are welcoming them I’ll go.

Agree that we may need to learn to live alongside this virus. Those that want to stay inside until 2021 are free to do so! Others can do a risk assessment and look at travel advice.

bigmamama · 19/05/2020 16:30

My holiday to turkey is still booked for 20th june... still going ahead as far as I know, can only get a refund If it's cancelled so me my dh and 2 young ds's will still be going. Providing we obviously get the ok

ImNotWhoYouThinkIam · 19/05/2020 16:31

We're due to go on a group holiday to Disneyland Paris. Everyone else is convinced it will go ahead and still keen to go. I'm not convinced it will or that i want to. But I cant cancel if no one else is. We arent planning to fly but to hire a mini bus.

I’d go to Europe because you’ll still be covered for health under EHIC

I wouldn't rely on this as it only covers you for basic state provided medical care and varies from country to country and may not cover all costs. Also it does not over you reparations or travel disruption which is a must with current situation as far as I'm concerned.
