Should I be annoyed that we haven't had a phone call from the school yet?

It's week 8 of lockdown. Surely we should have had one call by now? DC is in year 3.
Obviously this is uncharted territory so I don't really know what my expectations should be. But no call at all seems a bit neglectful!

DC is ok, he's not "vulnerable" so maybe he's bottom of the pile?

OP posts:
Joopy · 18/05/2020 20:31

Could you call them?

Qasd · 18/05/2020 20:32

We have two kids and haven’t fit either (different schools) I didn’t realise it was a “thing” until I read it on here. Cannot day I am bothered much more concerned about the minimal home learning on offer particularly for the younger.

EachDubh · 18/05/2020 20:33

Has your ds been going online and sharing work? It could be if they have a largw roll and a lot of vulnerable children then those who are engaging are not prioritised. My children's school haven't been in touch but we do daily work and post to their twitter page and i did work a shift early on with their head.

bettertimesarecomingnow · 18/05/2020 20:33

Wow that's interesting. We have to register daily and if they haven't heard from us by 12 they start calling.

Daily tasks to do in literacy and numeracy as well.

IgnoranceIsStrength · 18/05/2020 20:35

Same here. One set of printed worksheets before Easter then nothing, no emails, no phone calls and no contact. The odd text through parentsapp which says to go online (would be great if we had a printer). I find it odd to say the least as I work for a college and we have to have some form of contact every single week or we start doing welfare checks yet the kids at DS school have had no contact at all for 8 weeks

DahliaDay · 18/05/2020 20:36

What do you need a call for?

dementedpixie · 18/05/2020 20:38

Our secondary school has called once to check how we are all doing. I have emailed a couple of times and had replies

bigdaddysleotard · 18/05/2020 20:40

@DahliaDay I don't know, I'm just trying to work out what's normal TBH!

We get new worksheets put on the school website each week and have had 1 call. No marking or feedback, no uploading completed work or anything like that.

BunsyGirl · 18/05/2020 20:45

OP are they setting work for your DC?

dannydyerismydad · 18/05/2020 20:46

We've had no phone calls, but they upload work daily and DS has completed and handed in every piece of work. Feedback is always given by text or on an online portal every 24 hours.

A couple of times I've had questions and his teacher has emailed back immediately. I'm sure they would call if they had concerns.

Drivingdownthe101 · 18/05/2020 20:46

We haven’t either. The teachers have responded quickly to email contact though and I know they’re phoning vulnerable pupils. I’m more than happy with how they’re supporting.

Concerned7777 · 18/05/2020 20:48

My eldest in high school is in email contact with his teachers for learning support his form teacher calls me once a week to ask if we are ok and if ds needs any extra help or support. Youngest dc in primary have not called or emailed once until last week I had a message on dojo asking if I planned to send the youngest back to school 1st June

Bleepbloopblarp · 18/05/2020 20:51

Dd8 at state primary: we just get work uploaded onto the school website each week. We mark it ourselves. No feedback, no calls. That’s it until September I guess!

Dd14 and ds11 at private school: registration every day, zoom classes with teachers, teachers mark work, checkups with parents on whether they have completed work or not - they are very much on it! As a result the older two are completing pretty much all the work whilst the youngest is probably not even doing half (I accept responsibility for this too, I’m no teacher and the stress of lockdown in general means I’m struggling with homeschooling her too). If she knew she had to answer to her teacher I’m sure she would be much more motivated.

I guess you get what you pay for!

nowornever1 · 18/05/2020 20:51

No call from our primary school reception and year 3, but I share photos and work with the teachers and join class zoom calls.

Secondary school calls me if my son hasn't answered emails

BunsyGirl · 18/05/2020 20:53

@Bleepbloopblarp...but what are the teachers at the state school doing for the rest of the week if they aren’t marking work?

bettyboo40 · 18/05/2020 20:57

@BunsyGirl would you like a list of all the jobs I am doing this week as a teacher? In fact, read the numerous other threads on this forum, where teachers are doing just that.

Mummyshark2018 · 18/05/2020 21:00

We haven't had a call. We send work in weekly.

BunsyGirl · 18/05/2020 21:04

@bettyboo40 Touched a nerve have I?!!! Shall I tell you what my teacher brother is doing...revamping his garden! Some teachers are doing a lot, some are not. There have been lots of posts about schools setting no work whatsoever. Do you think that is acceptable?

TheDrsDocMartens · 18/05/2020 21:05

We share work and pics. Dd3 refuses to be in them but they’ve accepted that. I’ve spoke to the school by text too.

BunsyGirl · 18/05/2020 21:07

@bettyboo40 I took the following comments from a Facebook post in the space of five mins last week. It wasn’t a teacher bashing thread by the way, it was a query regarding the worst task set by a teacher during lockdown:

Not had anything set from school so just winging it

None, we've had the odd suggestion to grow sunflowers via FB!!!

Nothing set to submit but plenty of activities on the school website if one wants to.

Ideas via email and odd thing on class dojo but nothing set , it to print off . I do feel they could have had one or two proper lessons on line . I’ve used bbc bitesize lots . Feel a bit let down to be honest. My teenagers had all her lectures every day with homework

We was having lessons sent from the teacher but now its all the bitesize lessons

We haven’t been set any.

Our primary school haven’t set work. They’ve given suggestions and set games on Purple Mash, but for those who won’t/can’t access Purple Mash there’s nothing other than suggestions like use BBC bitesize.[Response: our school is exactly the same].

Notsurehow2handlethis · 18/05/2020 21:08

We're checking in with our pupils at least fortnightly, more if they're vulnerable. Are you sure the school has your correct contact details? I would phone them, if they're open for key worker children someone will be there

Notso · 18/05/2020 21:11

We haven't had phone calls. Primary have sent lots of Dojo messages though and work is set frequently along with links to various sites.

Nothing for DC in year 11 though. I kind of get it because technically they've finished but I know my DC is worried about what's going to happen next with results, college etc, he can't be the only one. Just a bit of a check in would be nice.

LilyMarshall · 18/05/2020 21:18

@BunsyGirl youre being very aggressive. Op asked if she should have had a phone call from school. Nobody needs to hear your vitriol.

We get online english and Maths work which is marked. Topic work is Photographed and emailed in. We always get an email back about the work.

Do you want a phone call op? I saw on another thread today a teacher phoned A home and the parent told them to go away. Some parents feel it is an invasion in their space.

Have you had emails?

IgnoranceIsStrength · 18/05/2020 21:22

I am the same. I am not disputing that the teachers are working and they are on a rota but at the same time I am a bit surprised we have had no contact at all - no phone, no emails and no work at beyond look at bbc bitesize
