Just been told dd’s school is only opening for year six

Just having a rant! Just had communication from the school that only year six will be in on 1st June and it has really annoyed me! How can things ever go back to how they need to be when schools are ignoring government guidelines! And yes I’m prepared to be flamed but it has annoyed me that I now need to tell my place of work that I still can’t go back to work!

I’m sorry to hear that. This is why I’ve said several times including on here that’s why I am not opposed to those parents who want their children back. I may be opposed to the whole idea but I totally get why some want children back. Perhaps it should be a clearer optional thing to ease anxiety for all and lower numbers for teachers.

My eldest is a very anxious child, she was really struggling with the extra hand washing etc pre closure, knowing her very well I know she would not adapt well at the moment. I’m preparing her and building resilience for the fact she may have to eventually ... but in the short term I feel it isn’t worth the upset. Other dc would be beside self at school alone and older dc would be same at home alone. That’s why I’ve made this choice (and because I’m vulnerable and freelance and can work at night - then go on Mumsnet when I should be asleep!).

Just explaining some have anxiety about schools opening and easing.

So I totally understand that yours have anxiety in the opposite way.

Will their school years be opening soon?

Sending virtual love.

U.K. reports all settings of those tested. Not suspected. Some countries list just hospital bit include suspected. Some list all. Some list less.

It’s hard to compare.

Daffodil101 · 19/05/2020 02:10

Thanks. Y6, should be allowed in but school refusing to open. y10 not clear but needs less support academically. Dreadful to see the state of her tonight, she’s had enough now. Both kids in tears at different points tonight.

So...I’m unable to work. I could of course send my Y6 in but was made to feel very guilty as can ‘work from home.’

Mumoftwo0357 · 19/05/2020 02:10

But while it’s hard to compare you equally can’t say we’re worst or not worst. We don’t know.

Daffodil101 · 19/05/2020 02:11

It’s a pointless thing to talk about.

Mumoftwo0357 · 19/05/2020 02:13

I feel really bad that year 10 and 12 aren’t getting to go back. I really needed that interaction at that age (ours are early years and KS1 so very different).

I am actually open to the idea of year 6 because the transition is so important and they can socially distance.

Even though you can work from home do you need privacy sometimes for mental health? Calls and suchlike?

Could they agree to take Y6 child for a couple of days at least to allow that?

Daffodil101 · 19/05/2020 02:32

They just don’t want most kids in. They’ve 4 or 5 most days, none in her year. Very much made to feel guilty, that’s all I can say!

Yes, it’s impossible to conduct calls or whatever at home, impossible to concentrate, too. I work alongside psychology and they are virtually uncontactable. I had a Skype call with one if them and he was looking after his three year old twins while we were discussing a patient in the community who is frankly pretty dangerous. Nothing was resolved.

Inpatients getting virtually nothing.

Everything is on hold. We’ve had an uptick in suicide, threats to staff, staff teams disbanded, AHPs on standby for work that doesn’t materialise (physios working on covid wards as helpers but no work for them).

Honestly it’s a shitshow of epic proportions, the press don’t seem to be reporting it.

Mumoftwo0357 · 19/05/2020 02:46

Could be worth trying to ask for at least a couple of half days or something. Understand it sounds difficult though.

It’s so hard on so many levels at the moment. I’m worried that the media have got so hyped up in their vendetta against teachers
, previously hype about statistics they’re ignoring the real issues like the ones you mention (and my mum and oh see too).

The press definitely need to highlight this but in a responsible way not a sensational way (that might heighten others anxiety).

Mumoftwo0357 · 19/05/2020 02:47

The press could be highlighting the facts of this though,

And other patients not seeking treatment for many other things.

Children's welfare come before your work OP

Right so the scientists don't know what they're doing but two union's know better. Righty ho then.

I don't blame you for having concerns but just refusing to believe the science on this is actually laughable.

Randomschoolworker19 · 19/05/2020 08:10

To give some perspective, our school has around 240 pupils on roll and around 30 members of staff. We currently have 12 members of staff who are clinically vulnerable and therefore self isolating. So 40% of our staff cannot be in school and are working from home instead. That 40% includes our Headteacher, Deputy Headteacher and our caretaker along with teachers and TAs.

We've told parents we will only be opening with Y6 first because they are the most able to socially distance and to be the less effected by how different school will be. They also require less ratios than Nursery or Reception children. There is also the fact we want to test the practicalities of the situation before we open up to more year groups.

Once Y6 is sorted, if we have enough staff we will open up to Year 1, Reception and Nursery in that order. Note, it is not statutory for Nursery children to come to school.

The government guidelines are a joke and are most likely written by people who have no clue how schools work in the real world. We were literally pissing ourselves laughing when they were saying on the briefing the other day that children (including 3 year olds), don't share their packed lunches.... they have no idea....

but of course, as usual, we can't be arsed...

Onone · 19/05/2020 08:15

My dd’s school starts with year 6 on the 1st June,year 1 8th June,reception 15th June then nursery 22nd June

DDiva · 19/05/2020 08:20

Our school is opening to year 6 first aswell. They will introduce r and yr1 later if they feel its manageable.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 19/05/2020 08:24

@FinnefanFox and some children's welfare relies on their parents working.

Hercwasonaroll · 19/05/2020 08:26

@Onone No school can guarantee those dates yet so be prepared for them to change.

Clinically vulnerable people have been advised that they can go into school as long as strict social distancing can be adhered to. The guidance states they should WFH if at all possible however. I think we all know that strict social distancing will be impossible in a school.

Mumoftwo0357 · 19/05/2020 08:35

Never said I don’t believe the science at all. I said listen to all the science, including the govs (Read all released docs not just what’s in the media) and the Research of the whole science community. As I’ve said. That’s actually more scientific that taking what you’re told By one group at face value.

middleager · 19/05/2020 08:36

Our Y6s won't be going back apart from maybe 1-2 transition type sessions at current school.

Nursery, Reception and Y1 will be going back in June, but not on 1st.

Heads have communicated why (in great detail) to parents and they are prepared to not open at all if need be.

Bollss · 19/05/2020 08:38

I have been reading the science. I've read loads of studies that have been linked in various threads on here. It's all well and good trying to make me look stupid but all studies government provided and not have shown your average adult is at a TINY risk.

If the BMA disagreed youd probably discredit them because what do they know about schools they're doctors etc.

Like I say I get that there's a concern this is a new virus but realistically we cannot continue in this way.

Greysparkles · 19/05/2020 08:38

If we were allowed PPE it would be better.

You can source your own PPE, as long as the headteacher OKs it. As many have pointed out on here. These are only government suggested guidlines

Whaddyathinkofthis · 19/05/2020 08:45

Greysparkles

We have been told no PPE except for start/end of day cleaning. None to be worn around children.

Whaddyathinkofthis · 19/05/2020 08:49

I've now received my schools plan for reopening. I think it's fair and reasonable and i feel a lot more reassured having read it.

However, a lot of parents will be unhappy as no child will be in for more than 2 days a week. Hardly the 'return to work' panacea the government was expecting.

Hercwasonaroll · 19/05/2020 08:50

I don't even want PPE. Realistically unless you are wearing medical grade stuff (which is terrifying and hard to speak through) it's pretty much useless. The risk to most adults is TEENY.

I'm hoping by June 1st the incidence of infections is lower so staff will be safer.

Bollss · 19/05/2020 08:52

@Whaddyathinkofthis that wouldn't help me much in terms of working no but it's better than nothing and I'd still be happy my child would get to see another child after 8 weeks!
