Travelling 90 mins to sit on a crowded beach - so silly right now

On the news today they showed a beach down in Devon, which was crowded with people to the point where social distancing was almost impossible. They filmed people going up and down some steps which are the only access path to one beach, then interviewed a family who had driven 90 miles to get there. The mother said "It's ridiculous, some people aren't even trying to social distance... it's like Tescos!" I found myself laughing at her attitude - did she really imagine that they would have the beach to themselves?!?

I understand that people are restless after weeks of lockdown, and they want to enjoy the sunshine, but I'm wondering whether we'll get a nasty spike in the death rates in around 3 weeks, due to the rules being relaxed a bit too much. It's a shame, as the number of deaths has declined over the last few days, but I doubt it will last long. I know we can't stay in strict lockdown forever, but beaches and beauty spots might become virus transmission hotspots if people can't resist the urge to travel to them. Maybe it would be better to limit numbers in some way and/or only allow parking for cars which are registered locally - say within 20 miles? What do others think?

We had a lady moaning on our local Facebook page that she had been out for a walk and it was so busy and what was everyone doing? Blah blah. Why don’t these people realise they are also doing the same??
Why do they have more right to be out than anyone else?

To be fair we are allowed out as much as we want. We are allowed to sunbathe and have picnics. We must keep our distance from other groups but I doubt anyone would be closer than 1-2m.

The only reason I wouldn’t travel too far is the loo issue.

woodhill · 17/05/2020 22:30

Yes totally agree Delatron and not being able to wash your hands properly etc too risky imo unless you live nearby.

Do people invest in those portable urinal devices you see in those Sunday supplement catalogues or is it just me who would need the loo?

TheGreatWave · 17/05/2020 22:32

We went to the beach today, people around but lots of room for everyone - tide was out which helped and it wasn't exactly sitting on the sand weather.

90 mins there and back is pushing it a bit too much.

Yes, the irony of it made me laugh. She'll probably get teased about it when her friends and family see her on the news. Grin

I do need to know what people are doing about the loo issue? Are they all going in bushes? Or do they have the bladder of a camel? It would be an issue for me after about an hour 😂. Maybe they are taking a potty?

manicinsomniac · 17/05/2020 22:37

We've got to start freedom again somewhere in some way. Outside travel seems a reasonable place to start.

Unfortunately it relies on common sense. Going to the beach is fine. But if, on arrival at the beach, people find it is already at capacity for social distancing and can't accommodate more people without getting too close, they need to shrug their shoulders, accept they should have got their earlier and go somewhere else.

But many people can't be relied on to do that. Especially if they've travelled a long way and have excited children.

highmarkingsnowmobile · 17/05/2020 22:39

I love it when eejits travel to beaches or beauty spots and then complain and act surprised that other people had the same thought.

Duck90 · 17/05/2020 22:40

I think the irony was that they had driven quite a long way to get there and then was moaning that it was busy and other people were ridiculous and she had done exactly the same thing

I watched it also, and thought the same thing. I don’t think they saw the flaw in their complaint.

woodhill · 17/05/2020 22:40

II know Delatron perhaps it is too taboo to discuss lavatory affairs on this thread🙂

Definitely no camel bladder here

ineedaholidaynow · 17/05/2020 22:43

I would need a wee as soon as we had parked the car!

okiedokieme · 17/05/2020 22:45

I went to the beach (10 mins drive) but came home because there was nowhere to park, everywhere full! But I don't blame people driving 90 miles, especially if there have been in a city with no private outside space

Legoandloldolls · 17/05/2020 22:46

Only a handful of people at a beach in the SE I was at today. No one sitting on the part we was on between the wooden breaker things. A few people walking, cycling or running on the road next the beach. Bliss. Drilove there. Stayed two hours and came home. Didnt anywhere nearee than ten metres from anyone. Never seen it so quite on a sunny day

Defenbaker · 17/05/2020 22:52

@woodhill not taboo at all, you've got me thinking now... a 90 minute drive, then sitting on the beach for an hour or two... toilets probably closed - yikes, I'd not be able to cope with that! Bad enough just needing a pee, but if you need a number two it could be awful!

Thing is, if you drive to a beach that is fairly local, you can always drive home again before you need the loo. Also, if the beach is packed when you arrive, it's no big deal to turn around and go home again, if you've only driven 10 or 20 mins. 90 mins is more of a commitment though... a case of making a fairly lengthy journey to spend time on the beach, so people might be more inclined to be stubborn and stick it out, even if it's packed. The lack of toilets must be an issue for some though.

We watched this and laughed, think she thought they would be the only family there! Wonder if she thought about what she had said afterwards and realised how silly she sounded.

Spr1ngStitches · 17/05/2020 22:59

I wee in the sea.😱

GabsAlot · 17/05/2020 23:05

its just hilarious when they say yeah weve driven 90 miles but why is everyone else here!

its why i cant go and meet my dsis 65 miles even if we met in the middle id need the toilet at some point

AvalancheKit · 17/05/2020 23:06

There are lots of live beach and streetcams if you know where to look. These continuously suggest people are not flicking to seaside towns at all. Where do these stories arise? Oh, yes the press!

Crinkle77 · 17/05/2020 23:08

Yes I couldn't believe it when they seemed shocked at how busy the beach was.

rainbowlou · 17/05/2020 23:17

We are 10 mins from the beach but stayed away because we knew it would be packed, regardless of Lockdown/easing of lockdown it will always be busy at this time of year at the weekend when it’s sunny!!
Wait until half term!!😀

Marshmanimal · 17/05/2020 23:23

Our nearest (non welsh) beach is 90 minutes away. It doesn’t seem an unreasonable trip if you can deal with finding something else to do (or just going home Sad) if it’s too busy when you get there. Although I guess if you’re one of the lucky ones who gets there early you’re relying on others doing the same .
Toilets are an issue though I must admit

DamitJanet · 17/05/2020 23:26

We took a trip to the beach today, about 25 miles away. Was absolutely lovely. Car park had about half a dozen cars in it, and only saw a couple of dog walkers while we were there. This is usually a pretty popular spot, but guess the cafe and loos being closed out people off.

(Stayed about 90 mins, no one needed the loo!)

Madhatterhouse · 17/05/2020 23:27

“On the plus side, apparently sunshine helps kill the virus” @defenbaker do you have any scientific evidence for that? I would love to know the facts.

RainbowMum11 · 17/05/2020 23:28

I don't know about beaches - love about as I land as possible, but I do know that our local tourist 'hotspots' have been getting busier and busier since Weds, the. It's song has again being drowned out by the sound of motorbikes and cars. Cars have been parked all the way along narrow roads and car parks full.
And reports from our local council about people using the streets as the public toilets are (obviously!) closed.
Disgusting and selfish behaviour meaning that locals don't dare go out as it's just too busy.

Thisdressneedspockets · 17/05/2020 23:28

@ineedaholidaynow, it's amazing what you can improvise with a she wee and an empty detergent bottle. It makes car wees entirely possible.

Chillipeanuts · 17/05/2020 23:30

If it was the report of Durdle Dore, in Dorset, I had to laugh. The “shocked” woman they interviewed, who expressed such surprise that there were so many people there, had driven 1 1/2 hours to get there herself 🤯
