Why are people not wearing masks?

I’m queuing inside my local supermarket, I’ve see one other person wearing a mask.

Does it not make sense to just TRY to protect other people and try and keep infection rates down. Even a scarf wound round your face?!

I think they should be compulsory when you are inside. Is it the PPE shortage which is preventing Boris from making it so?

Talk to me about masks!

NoHardSell Very interesting read. Thanks for linking.

R1R2 · 17/05/2020 21:00

BUT THERES NO EVIDENCE scream the hard of thinking. Corona virus is spread by aerosols and those aerosols landing on a surface then being transferred to the face. If you have a mask or other appropriate face covering what do you think happens to the aerosol levels?

NoHardSell · 17/05/2020 21:08

Oh another armchair expert.

NoHardSell · 17/05/2020 21:09

Screamy screamy shouty shouty

R1R2 · 17/05/2020 21:17

You dont need to be a expert to work out what happens to an aerosol when it hits a barrier numb nuts

Oddly enough, there are some of us around that do actually care about the health of other people - I may not like people I come across but I do not want them to die or get sick. It's called being a decent human being.

Unless wearing a mask will actively risk killing you, there is no excuse for not wearing one. I'm so tired of people not giving a shit about public welfare.

My mask is stifling especially when I have to wear it with glasses and I feel massively uncomfortable, but I suck it the fuck up and wear it because I don't want to be responsible for infecting someone with COVID19, if I'm a carrier.

It's called not being a selfish twat. I will keep saying that until people get it.

I don't like people, but I want them to be safe and healthy. That involves taking precautions and not thinking only of myself. There's a lot of people here who would do well to try it. It's not just about family. But you know, fuck everyone else, right?

NoHardSell · 17/05/2020 21:25

It's a really very interesting article I posted. I recommend it.

Mascotte · 17/05/2020 21:26

You need to ensure you wear it once and don't touch it, remove it properly and wash it at over 60 degrees or bin it. Otherwise it's a haven for germs which will be spread when you touch it, touch your trolley, card, whatever.

Blue565 · 17/05/2020 21:31

I'm with the 'I don't want to' crew.

Which is a perfectly acceptable reason.

Be very careful about wishing for compulsory anything really

SudokuBook · 17/05/2020 21:40

I may not like people I come across but I do not want them to die or get sick

Neither do I, but sadly, shit happens. People get sick and die all the time. I ain’t taking the flak for the government failings which has led to the virus being handled badly and the number of deaths, not a few people breaking lockdown or not wearing a mask

WHO still only say you need to wear one if nursing or dealing with someone with CV.

SudokuBook · 17/05/2020 21:44

We’re not faced with the worst death toll in Europe because your neighbour went twice to the park instead of once, or because someone two doors down flouted the rules to pursue an affair. We’re mired in catastrophe as a direct result of the very thing our twee public merriment and furious finger-wagging hopes to obscure: the decades-long shadow of our structural indifference.

From the guardian article, exactly this.

But do keep playing into the governments hands, wearing your mask, snitching on your neighbours, berating people as “selfish” for getting deliveries of shopping etc, while the real failings in this mess go unchecked.

NoHardSell · 17/05/2020 21:45

WHO obviously just don't care. Not like these amazing, selfless posters. Give them all medals.

PestymcPestFace · 17/05/2020 23:11

Some light reading from the WHO
apps.who.int/iris/bitstream/handle/10665/329439/WHO-WHE-IHM-GIP-2019.1-eng.pdf?ua=1
Of course some people have no doubt already read and dismissed it as it turns out prediction and reality differ slightly when it comes to non-pharmaceutical public health measures for mitigating the risk and impact of epidemics and pandemics.

user1477391263 · 18/05/2020 01:31

Exactly.

The WHO stated clearly in its own guidance that widespread masking is helpful for mitigating pandemics. Then suddenly changed its mind when COVID19 hit.

user1477391263 · 18/05/2020 01:49

I seem to recall the countries that are seeing an actual success based on truthful info, went into complete lockdown.

No.

Taiwan, HK, Singapore, Japan never had full lockdowns, let alone "complete" lockdowns (not even sure what that is supposed to mean. They just closed schools and pushed early social distancing in a more voluntary way---encouraging companies to have people work from home where possible for example, and banning big events or large public gatherings.

Taiwan never even closed its schools--just adopted SDing practices very quickly.

Other countries which have more or less eradicated the virus did have lockdowns of course---Vietnam and NZ come to mind.

However,r schools closures, plus voluntary social distancing adopted early, plus masks, appears to be sufficient to shut the virus down, esp if countries are also quarantining infected people away from their households.

I'm a cashier in a lovely supermarket. The store supplies face visors, disposable gloves and hand sanitizer to staff who wish to use them, we can wear masks if we choose to but must bring our own. I wear a visor but not a mask. I sip water regularly through my shift and would have to keep moving the mask to drink, also my glasses steam up.

I would say the majority of our customers were wearing masks of some sort last week, many have been for several weeks. They range from scarves worn bandit-style, to pleated fabric masks, surgical paper masks, decorators' masks, N95 respirator masks, to full gas masks.

We are close to a large university hospital and none of the NHS staff wear PPE in the store. One NHS dentist did express approval that we had face shields and said they are certainly the best protection for cashiers, who are sitting at a lower level than the customers passing in front of us.

I have fabric masks to wear when I go shopping, I don't need to use public transport but if I did, I'd wear a mask and gloves.

Whataloadofshite · 18/05/2020 04:01

Not wanting to is a bullshit, short sighted, and ignorant decision.

But then people are self serving by default so I don't know what I expected really. I would wholeheartedly welcome compulsory masking, especially with so many careless idiots about. You're a disgrace.

Fefifoefum · 18/05/2020 06:14

Yes. I’m a nurse, in contact with confirmed cases.
It would be wholly irresponsible of me to not wear a mask whilst in Sainsbury’s.

NoHardSell · 18/05/2020 06:26

Have you got any other measures which don't do anything but which help you feel better that you'd like to inflict on everyone to calm the fear you feel inside you? Trying to control other people is a poor substitute for controlling a virus but some of you definitely need something to help calm you down.

SudokuBook · 18/05/2020 06:46

The main thing about the masks is that people can SEE how selfless and HOW MUCH MORE they care about protecting random people than everyone else. Unlike only shopping once a month for gruel which no one else really got to see. It’s a virtue signaller’s wet dream.

bellinisurge · 18/05/2020 07:30

Pouting about how you aren't going to wear one is also a virtue signaller's wet dream. You are a free spirit and preserving our freedom where other people are too stupid to do it etc etc

We all need to get over ourselves .

SudokuBook · 18/05/2020 07:48

No I don’t think I did cite that as the reason actually bellini. Mine was that I did wear one but no one else bothered so I decided not to bother either

Literally couldn’t care less about random people I don’t know getting ill any more than they care about me.

rookiemere · 18/05/2020 07:51

I've been wearing a mask in the supermarket for purely selfish reasons. I believe I've already had covid-19 so it's not to stop me spreading it or catching it.

I would like us to try to get back to some semblance of normality in the near future. Mask wearing seems to help in the countries where this is well under control. Therefore I'd like to normalise mask wearing for now because the higher percentage of people wearing them hopefully the better.

If mask wearing means a quicker and safer reopening of things, then I'm all for it.

NoHardSell · 18/05/2020 08:21

We're posting to answer a direct question. It's not like any of us are starting threads saying 'I'd rather die than lose my freedom wearing a mask. Aibu?' Those threads might be out there but I haven't read them. We all have different reasons, but it's up to us what we do. Not only is it not a legal requirement, nor a WHO recommendation, but it is also a totally unproven way of preventing spread in the community. Hysterical stamping of feet is about something else. I thought that article summed up the 'something elses' nicely.
