Why are people not wearing masks?

I’m queuing inside my local supermarket, I’ve see one other person wearing a mask.

Does it not make sense to just TRY to protect other people and try and keep infection rates down. Even a scarf wound round your face?!

I think they should be compulsory when you are inside. Is it the PPE shortage which is preventing Boris from making it so?

Talk to me about masks!

The UK has become such a snide, nasty place couldn’t agree more!!!
The sweeping statements people make about people who have a different view to theirs is shocking. From immigration: if you raise concerns about the numbers you are a racist and if you claim to be pro immigration why don’t you house illegal immigrants. To voting torie: well you don’t deserve to use the nhs, and if you voted labour last election you must want to slaughter Jews.
It’s absurd!

Jellybean27 · 17/05/2020 14:32

Bit dramatic that @FrothyB

It’s people conforming for a period of time that will assist in having current restrictions on our lives being lifted.

missclimpson · 17/05/2020 14:38

In my small French town about 75% of people are wearing masks. We have a national public information campaign showing how to use masks safely, two free masks per person and others cheaply available and politicians and officials (including the President) who wear masks and lead by example.
Our hairdressers have now opened - no mask, no haircut.

canigooutyet · 17/05/2020 14:49

It is insane.
You also forgot about those who aren’t letting anyone in or out until there’s a vaccine. Something that will never exist.

Silly people and their clipboards trying to police everyone else. The police begging please stop letting us know that your neighbour went out. The ridiculousness of the ‘essentials’. Many wanted take-always closed down forgetting thanks to panic buyers, this was the only access to food many had for weeks. And of course reports to the police even though you (general) have had daily deliveries of things like clothing.

Attitude from some has always been like this. Nothing will change until it hits them. Cannot think outside their own little box. Waiting for someone else to come along and tell them what to do next.

Just look at what happened when you (general) rushed to the stores and bought loads of toilet roll. Cases of bottled water. Anti bac gel. Soap etc.

Now all that excess sits there, taking up space. Will do a long time because even the increase of staying at home wouldn’t really make a dent 🤣 All the food that was chucked in the bins.

Lweji · 17/05/2020 14:52

I'm not going to wear a mask.
At some point it may become mandatory for public transport or indoor activities, including going to the GP, or the local corner shop. What will you do then?

Lweji · 17/05/2020 14:54

I'm probably just a selfish bastard
Yes.

canigooutyet · 17/05/2020 14:58

A friend of mine is a hair dresser. The way she sees it is you can go into someone’s home to look after their children then why cannot hair dressers open now?

They usually wear gloves when washing hair. If your hair dresser is sneezing/coughing over people anyway I wouldn’t go back. I wouldn’t want a customer doing it and would be told to leave.

But alas it seems we are incapable of making our own risk assessments.

The past is gone and I really don’t won’t to live in a world where I would never be allowed out. I have committed no crime. And even if I had I wouldn’t be held forever in isolation. For legit reasons this would be the reality for millions.

NiknicK · 17/05/2020 14:58

Maybe because some people do not want to. They look ghastly, most don't feel comfortable, and some, depending on how well they fit and what they're made out of, aren't in the least bit effective.

canigooutyet · 17/05/2020 15:02

@Lweji
If they became mandatory, I will take the quick way out.
Better than a lifetime of nothing. I wouldn’t be able to access ongoing medical care.
It would also push a lot of people out of work, not advised if you have respiratory condition and not all professions can be done from work. Furlough and the increased number now claiming out of work benefits has proved this.

canigooutyet · 17/05/2020 15:03

*from home obviously 😆

HumphreyGoodmanswife · 17/05/2020 15:05

I'm with you 100% @FrothyB

highmarkingsnowmobile · 17/05/2020 15:11

Great post, Frothy!

Kill myself. My ptsd means mask wearing is impossible because it's far too triggering.

Kerlassic · 17/05/2020 15:24

@FrothyB great post thank you.

I don’t wear a mask. I don’t want to. I won’t be compelled to cover my face by social pressure. Obviously if it becomes law I will do so when required as I obey the law. But other than that, no.

Thighmageddon · 17/05/2020 15:26

Our hairdressers have now opened - no mask, no haircut.

I'm hoping that's what it will be here, I'm desperate to get to the hairdressers but only in as safe a way as possible.

BamboozledandBefuddled · 17/05/2020 15:36

Do you realise that in the majority of countries where it's mandatory, people are exempt from wearing them for various medical reasons? That covers both physical and mental health. Firstly, stop winding people up about something that's extremely unlikely to happen. Then, tell us what you'll be doing IF it becomes mandatory and you see someone in public without a mask. Ring the police? Walk up and harass them? Demand to see written proof that they're medically exempt? Maybe those who are exempt could have an identifying symbol stitched on their clothing. I'd expect that idea to appeal to the mentality of some people on here.

Willyoujustbequiet · 17/05/2020 15:45

There are doctors, nurses and a government expert on this thread all advising to wear masks. Combined with it being compulsory in other countries.

And yet, medical issues aside, there are still some incredibly ignorant people who will dig their heels in and wallow in their selfishness. The same ilk who no doubt drink drive, anti vac etc who are happy to put others at risk.

When the 2nd wave comes and we get a further lockdown I hope you are happy.

NoHardSell · 17/05/2020 15:50

The more you finger point ... drink driving now as an insult! ... the less likely I am to wear a mask. Have fun :)

bellinisurge · 17/05/2020 15:55

Don't wear a fucking mask if you don't want to. Jesus.🤷‍♀️
But stop whining about people who do.

Papatron · 17/05/2020 15:55

Frothy B is right!

SudokuBook · 17/05/2020 16:03

There will be a second wave anyway.

BamboozledandBefuddled · 17/05/2020 16:04

But stop whining about people who do

Thread was started by someone whining about people who don't wear masks. Why not tell them to stop?

bellinisurge · 17/05/2020 16:19

So many opportunities for everyone to whine at everything. And do much time to do it in.

canigooutyet · 17/05/2020 16:23
  • Don't wear a fucking mask if you don't want to. Jesus.🤷‍♀️ But stop whining about people who do.*

Oh so those who wear masks can call none mask wearers selfish etc?

As for there’s loads of medical people on this thread blah blah blah. I could tell you all I live in Australia as a medic. Doesn’t make it true.

But then I don’t blindly follow the pack. I look into things, look at facts not people’s wishful thinking, I use all this to help me make my own risk assessment.

I know the risk to this for me. Same with every virus/infection that has been around for decades. I take care of my health and don’t care what others do. You wearing or not wearing a mask has little to do with me and my risk.

I live my life to the fullest. If I let fear or hysteria take over I would have never gone out. Those at risk have always faced these risks.
