All my son's friends are now meeting up in groups. Probably in each other houses. Of course I am the worlds worst mother for saying he can only meet one friend outside at a time. Pretty much everyone he knows is assuming they can do what they want now. Why bother keeping secondary schools shut now? It's pointless. Instead we are going to have groups of bored teenagers roaming around all summer. I am in despair.Sad

So teachers are a protected species? I don't see supermarket workers complaining

So two wrongs make a right you should watch this. It's so you.

OP, you sound very stressed, but it is stressful for everyone and the solution isn't to give up. It's a very selfish position

SmileEachDay · 16/05/2020 08:27

OP, this will not go down well on Mumsnet where teachers ARE a protected species

In what way?

Connie222 · 16/05/2020 08:27

My 17 year old cares deeply.

He’s not left the house for 8 weeks to protect me as I’m pregnant.

He’s worked like a dog to finish this year of his btec online so that there would be no chance of him returning to college.

He’s changed his options for next year to modules that are easier done on line.

He knows that it wouldn’t be safe travelling the 45 min on a packed coach twice a day and worries about his tutors in the tiny classrooms.

Bookaholic73 · 16/05/2020 08:28

Umm..surely it’s up to YOU to ensure he doesn’t meet up with friends?

I have a 16 year old and they are just chatting online and via social media.

cologne4711 · 16/05/2020 08:29

I'm not bashing teachers but I am going to bash the teaching unions.

Lets do video lessons - you can't do that!

Lets mark work we set - you can't do that!

We need kids back to school - no way!

What do teaching unions actually think their members are employed for?

I thought the RMT was unreasonable enough with its 3 weeks strike in December over who presses a door-opening button but the teaching unions are making themselves look ridiculous.

IHateCoronavirus · 16/05/2020 08:30

Well my two teenage sons aren’t roaming the streets meeting up with friends. Neither are my god daughters (both teenagers) or any of my friend’s teenage kids. Why? Because we are bothering to parent them.

Get some bloody respect and responsibility and parent your own kids. It is people like you who can’t be arsed to raise your own child who end up giving teenagers a bad name.
Your feral snowflakes, who can’t hear “no” are the reason why the nice kids in the middle and lower sets at school haven’t got a chance to do well due to all the disruption.

Instead of bashing teachers, why don’t you use this opportunity to get your own house in order and raise a young man or woman who will actually make a positive contribution to society.

Of course I am the worlds worst mother for saying he can only meet one friend outside at a time

Have you thought about educating him better as to the situation? Or does he think he’s a special soul?

SmileEachDay · 16/05/2020 08:34

I'm not bashing teachers but I am going to bash the teaching unions

Um. You don’t understand how unions work.

user1471510720 · 16/05/2020 08:34

My kind is blown. Do any of you not understand that the policy is for the disease to carry on spreading. We will all get it, the lockdown was to just to get the NHS in working order, nothing more.

The quicker we all get it, most with mild effects the better. The lords, people are as thick as planks these days, mainly teachers by the look of it,

Mynydd · 16/05/2020 08:34

Hey I know why don't we disband the unions! All unions. We'll barely need them in the coming months, Boris will look after us all.

GreenGlassVase · 16/05/2020 08:35

We are all going to have to live with this and open society.
Even if it kills us.
That’s the truth
We can hope for a vaccine, but most of us will be the last in line.
We can’t live like this forever.

A woman I know actually said that lower paid people were back in work, and those who hadn’t stopped working in public, were in work, because they were not intelligent enough to know the risks.
I told her that people are completely aware of the risks, but have to live and earn money, and pay bills.
She told me she could have her cleaner in her house now, and I told her she always could have, if she’d wanted to, as people could continue two work, if their work had no other option than to leave their homes to do so.

People have selected reading abilities ..

GreenGlassVase · 16/05/2020 08:36

To work, not two work *.....sheesh

Candyfloss99 · 16/05/2020 08:36

So you are fed up of having your own child at home and want to risk everyone's life so you don't have to put up with him anymore?

Mynydd · 16/05/2020 08:37

@user1471510720 nope. No one gets it but you. You alone have been blessed with clarity and understanding. Go forth and teach the children now, would you?

Myfriendanxiety · 16/05/2020 08:37

The chance of catching it in a 2 minute exchange while paying for your shopping is significantly less than a teacher exposed to a group of children for 6 hours a day in an exploded space.

I’m a teacher, I’m not god, I don’t need specialist protected status, but if a healthcare professional treating a single non-COVID patient for 5 minutes needs PPE then the government is clearly saying the risks at the minute are high and teachers shouldn’t be expected to face large groups of people for prolonged periods of time.

LockdownLonely · 16/05/2020 08:39

Every teacher I have spoken to in real life is delighted with the situation. They do not think they will be going back until there is a vaccine.

I still don’t understand why a proportion of them have not been furloughed at 80% pay. Surely they can’t all still be working full time.

whacks493 · 16/05/2020 08:39

If these kids parents who are allowing their children to break lockdown rules can not control their kids then reopening schools will put more people into danger

Teachers/TA/caretakes/Dinner staff/ kids themselves/family's of the children that are following procedures.

Good discipline starts at home. I imagine teachers would be happy to pick the children they know will follow rules back into School but unfortunately can not discriminate this way.

Gwynfluff · 16/05/2020 08:40

I’m fine if they don’t back until after summer if they massively improve the online provision. As unions have also argued against online teaching in the state via a VLE in terms of real-time online classes, many state schools haven’t invested or improved their provision. Mine have had a succession of stuff on show my homework, educake quizzes and worksheets. When they’ve asked for help via email there has been hours of delay for an answer and the moment has passed. We go a survey out from the school that didn’t allow any criticism at all. They clearly think if they can demonstrate what they have provided that in itself shows they have ‘delivered’ online teaching and learning. My younger 2 will be behind when they go back. Older one is fine as she is in a-levels doing 3 subjects she is both good at and loves and is good at self directing, so she’s continued as normal.

disorganisedsecretsquirrel · 16/05/2020 08:41

Not a teacher. However I am a parent. My girls have been out one a fortnight each to do a weekly shop as I'm shielding. They understand why and stick to the rules.

My wish for schools return , does not trump a teachers right to a safe healthy life.

ThrowItInTheBin · 16/05/2020 08:42

We need to stop comparing teachers with supermarket workers, maybe with prison officers as a closer comparison - in confined spaces with large numbers of people, some of whom wouldn't hesitate to share bodily fluids with you.
Haven't seen many Prison Officers complaining mind you, they just get on with it and turn up to work......

WatchingFromTheWings · 16/05/2020 08:45

Instead we are going to have groups of bored teenagers roaming around all summer

That's not down to the schools. That's down to shit parenting. Keep your kids at home!

ballstoit · 16/05/2020 08:46

Why would you want your teenager to be mixing with morons who don't Social distance? Even the biased science that the government are paying for only suggest children under 11 suffer mild symptoms.

Teenagers can suffer more severely, can end up in ITU and can die.

My teenagers are at home - they understand the risks. Obviously, they're not over the moon but nor are they raging at me about a situation beyond my control.

If the government cared about education, they'd have funded schools properly. And if they cared about the most vulnerable children, they wouldn't have closed sure starts and raised the threshold for social services to a point where you can chronically neglect your child and no one can do a thing unless you agree to accept help Hmm

Godzillasonice · 16/05/2020 08:46

My teenager isn’t out and neither are her friends. There is a small group in my area who have been meeting up at my local park since the beginning but any other teenager I have seen have been with their family. Kids always tell you “but everyone else is doing it!” When they’re probably not.

softjellycell · 16/05/2020 08:46

Haven't seen many Prison Officers complaining mind you, they just get on with it and turn up to work......

I haven't seen any messages bashing prison officers on here. Show me an existing, currently active thread of them and I'll take you more seriously. Until then......
