Has this changed the way you (will) shop?

I already bought quite a bit from local shops but since coronavirus I have avoided supermarkets completely! I think when this is all over I will get a monthly delivery from the supermarket for staples like loo roll, tins, cleaning products and get everything from local bakes, greengrocers etc instead. Obviously it depends on what you have nearby but we have so many little shops that I had never been in and have only really discovered lately. Plus I often can't park anywhere near my flat so coming home with a big supermarket shop is actually a PITA.

Always used online shopping with top up shops in person. We are shielding so we will be only doing one online up shop a weeK for a while now.

VividImagination · 15/05/2020 13:37

I have always used all the little shops, usually at closing time, for all their greatly reduced items along with Tesco at reducing time. Currently I am getting an online supermarket delivery when I can topped up with deliveries from the local farm shops (we’re seIf isolating). I would love to shop like this all the time but my £60-80 weekly budget has more than doubled and I won’t have that money once I’m back to spending on fuel and children’s activities.

rosie39forever · 15/05/2020 13:38

Yes I have always gone to the supermarket for my main shop and then smaller top ups throughout the week alongside home bargains and similar for household stuff. DH is shielding and DD is vulnerable so I haven't been in a shop of any kind for 9 weeks, I'm using Tesco for grocery delivery, Boots for toiletries and Amazon pantry for cleaning and store cupboard, I've even managed to get tonnes of flour and baking ingredients from small cake and bakery suppliers.
I don't miss shopping one bit and have discovered that I can buy absolutely everything I need online and intend to carry on when this is all over.

Guess I will continue to supermarket shop even though I hate it at the moment. I'll try and keep my shops down to once a week, whereas I'd often pop in a few times a week after work (next door) for essentials and whatever I fancied that day for tea, sometimes chose a book as I read a lot.

In the ideal world I'd like to support the town centre shops when they open, as I don't have regular use of a car and enjoy a potter around and coffee out on my own. When I will feel ready to do that, I don't know - neither of us feel we won't to stand and queue for a takeaway, the garden centre right now, as standing in a long queue, increasing our risk of infection doesn't appeal.

totallyyesno · 15/05/2020 13:42

@VividImagination It's interesting you say that as I don't seem to be spending much more. (A little bit but that's to be expected seeing as we're all eating all our meals at home). I think I am buying less on impulse.

Yes , we've definitely changed our habits. We used to get an Ocado delivery weekly. We now get get a weekly veg box from a local supplier (with cheese, eggs , milk , bread etc) , and only use Ocado monthly for meat , frozen foods and toiletries. It has worked out about the same price and we're eating much healthier food.

Hagisonthehill · 15/05/2020 13:57

I have been forced to buy mainly from the supermarket and only once a week.
I am looking forward to buying more from local shops an popping out more frequently for fresh bread, milk and veg.
I also have to use the car for the big shop, before I would walk as I didn't have souch to carry.

DesmondTheMoonbear · 15/05/2020 13:59

Only in that I'll be going out as much as possible.

IcedPurple · 15/05/2020 14:03

No. Have always done the bulk of my shopping locally with the rest online, and I don't expect that to change.

RainMustFall · 15/05/2020 14:06

Have always had a supermarket delivery once a week and continuing to do so, no change.

LaurieFairyCake · 15/05/2020 14:10

I've stopped online Ocado deliveries as they're charging £6.99 every time Hmm with no cheaper deliveries

I'm going out to my local shops and won't go back to Ocado

selfisolationsociety · 15/05/2020 14:15

Yes we do one massive shop now instead of topping up all the time

Allthepinkunicorns · 15/05/2020 14:18

Yes we now get our fruit and veg from the green grocers, meat from the butchers and fish from the fish mongers. All much better tasting, hardly any queing, supporting local businesses and not much more expensive.

iVampire · 15/05/2020 14:19

I’m shielding, so everything is going into a weekly delivery

So I’ve learned to go without top ups, except for asking a neighbour to buy me a loaf if I run out of bread. I have lovely friends/neighbours who have offered to help, but it feels like too much to ask, other than for the odd item.

I’m planning the freezer properly now, which helps

Gazelda · 15/05/2020 14:21

I'm going to shop locally where possible, with a fortnightly supermarket shop.

I was talking about this with DH last night - were both conscious about supporting local businesses. And trying to cut down our amazon expenditure.

I'd started to be more mindful when shopping from the beginning of the year - to buying unnecessary clothes, giving experiences rather than 'things' as gifts etc. It feels even more important than ever.

Beautiful3 · 15/05/2020 14:21

No I'll remain with my online supermarket shop. I love having everything arrive at the same time. First few weeks of lock down I struggled to get slots so ended up topping up from local shops, they were more expensive.

Footywife · 15/05/2020 14:30

For the time being we'll continue with online shopping - only using our local corner shops for bits and bobs.

However, I do miss shopping. I miss wandering round Asda seeing and trying different things. I find we've got into a bit of a rut mealwise with online shopping. Does anyone else feel this way?

Legoandloldolls · 15/05/2020 14:41

I was just thinking now about buying clothes in the future. I normally get the kids clothes in Primark, supermarkets and the odd few bits from joules, Hollister, superdry etc. But the block of their clothes come from.mooching around shops esp in the sales. I'm not going to be able to bulk out their wardrobes in Primark for a long time in reality am i?

Queueing up to get in then surely some kind of way way system and people waiting for you to leave? Sounds bloody stressful. I want to change my ways and buy things only as they grow out from now on ( lockdown started and then I realised two kids hand no clothes that fitted due to growth spurts). But I wont have the choice anyway will I? Unless i want to spend a few days out of the week queuing, looking then queueing up again if I like the first shop the best?

So, for many reasons it will be Asda or Sainsburys for kids clothes for the foreseeable.

Weekly food shops too and no whim trips to the high street for retail therapy. It's all going to be more targeted and a lot less fun

fussychica · 15/05/2020 14:45

I used to shop 4 or 5 times a week as part of my walking. Now go in the car once a week to carry everything in one trip. We don't have any local small shops like butchers, greengrocers or fishmongers in our town so no choice but to go to the supermarket.

DH and I used enjoy browsing together sometimes but of course that's all stopped, it's just one in and out, to a list as woe betide if you forget something as there's no going back unless you want to queue to enter again.

I can't get online at any supermarket which is a total pain. Ocado had the cheek to ask me what I thought of their serviceShock, I said what service?

I would love to be able to shop normally again, taking my time, browsing, looking for inspiration but it ain't gonna happen any time soon. First world problem I know.

VividImagination · 15/05/2020 17:45

@totallyyesno I think it’s a mix of things. My nearest little shop reduces everything to 10p at the end of the day. Sometimes it’s only bits and pieces but often there’s 30+ items, so £3 for several bags of shopping, including my meat for the week. With self isolating I can’t go shopping myself. Also, I have 2 young adult dc and a teenager. Normally dc3 has school lunches and I rarely provide more than evening meals for the older ones. With all of us at home I seem to need soooo much! I could ask them to help with the cost but as they are staying home to protect their vulnerable dad I feel I should provide.

ragged · 15/05/2020 18:21

Corner shops are open here but iffy value & quality & long Q to even get in.

All the other little shops are closed here, so we can only go online or huge supermarkets.

Heatherjayne1972 · 15/05/2020 18:25

Yeah. No more ‘popping to the shop’
Each visit requires a que outside and inside

And then no guarantee that the shop will even have what you wanted to buy

So less visits to the shop Just no point

ScarfLadysBag · 15/05/2020 18:27

We have always done a weekly shop online and have continued throughout lockdown, but due to shortages at the start we found a milkman and local butcher who deliver, and we will keep using those, as well as the local fruit farm.
