I shook somebody’s hand today!

I did it without bloody thinking. A bloke I know via the internet through a shared interest, but have never met before today, was giving away something I needed, and only lives a 10 minute drive away, so I went to collect it this afternoon. He opened the front door and put his hand out and I instinctively shook it, before we both realised, laughed and backed away. We both hand sanitised and kept our distance after that, but it’s made me realise how fucking easy it is to forget yourself. I’m not the most tactile person; not especially huggy with family and friends, and I’ve been so careful and aware until today, but I used to work in banking and handshaking is just kind of instilled in me from that I’m not overly worried about it, as it was a brief moment of contact, but it’s shook me how easily I forgot what I’m no longer allowed to do. I guess I now get the “Stay alert” thing!

Hmm
TrickyWords · 15/05/2020 00:55

It’s hard isn’t it. I saw a colleague for the first time in six weeks yesterday and we both went to hug. We didn’t but gosh it was a shock to have to think about it.

40somethingJBJ · 15/05/2020 01:04

@TrickyWords It is hard when it’s something you just instinctively do.

@WhentheRabbitsWentWild why the rolly eyes? Have I said something to offend you?

No
I just don't really understand the angst .

DamnYankee · 15/05/2020 01:24

@40somethingJBJ

I get it. My daughter's dance teacher - during an outdoor, socially distanced, masked dance class (how creative is that?) - froze because she corrected my daughter's dance position. I just laughed.

It happens! Wondering if people will start to greet each other with elbow bumps, bowing, or (dating myself here) Mork's hand signal and "Nanu-nanu"?

Ooh, how about Carol Burnett's ear tugs (meant for her mother at the end of every show?

40somethingJBJ · 15/05/2020 01:29

@WhentheRabbitsWentWild no angst here. I said I’m not overly worried about it. Just surprised myself how easily I forgot the rules for that split second, that’s all. No need to jump on me :)

@DamnYankee I’m up for Nanu-Nanu Grin

Cheers!

Or "Live long and prosper.."? Clearly the rest of the world will be looking for us to be the Miss Manners of a post-Covid world.
Naturally.

Neither did Boris and that worked out well for him, didn’t it? Grin

Pinktornado · 15/05/2020 06:25

It’s so ingrained, isn’t it? My DH and I met a colleague of mine on a walk yesterday and when I introduced them they went to shake hands automatically! I thought I was going to have to leap between them but they realised in time and laughed.

JayAlfredPrufrock · 15/05/2020 06:29

I did it the other day. Then when I realised, touched my face in faux horror.

It’s best I stay in.

Ellietotherescue7 · 15/05/2020 06:45

@DamnYankee

My DD wants to get back to her dance classes so bad.

Might suggest that idea to her dance teacher.

Aramox · 15/05/2020 07:18

Group teaching is not allowed surely? Just one on one (distanced)?

Ellietotherescue7 · 15/05/2020 07:21

@aramox

But if they are not closer than two meteres to each other?

foamrolling · 15/05/2020 07:23

Damn Yankee has just shown exactly why a group class isn't a good idea. Surely a 'gathering' of that size isn't allowed anyway?

SouthWestmom · 15/05/2020 07:23

Yes I thought gatherings of more than two weren't allowed for exercise or any purpose ?

Ellietotherescue7 · 15/05/2020 07:34

@foamrolling

Sorry but I don't understand how she shown that it wasn't a good idea

Pipandmum · 15/05/2020 07:39

It's one person from outside your household keeping 2m apart. So one on one dance class: yes, group: no. That has been made clear.

Aramox · 15/05/2020 07:47

Because it makes people careless and takes up too much open space. Anyway it’s clearly against the rules.

Ellietotherescue7 · 15/05/2020 07:48

@Pipandmum

Would one on one dance classes be ok? As presumably the parent would also be there at some point.

foamrolling · 15/05/2020 07:49

Ellie, because the teacher forgot herself and didn't maintain the 2 metres.

InFiveMins · 15/05/2020 07:54
Biscuit
Ellietotherescue7 · 15/05/2020 08:00

@foamrolling

Yes that is a major problem.

WhentheRabbitsWentWild · 15/05/2020 11:50

@40somethingJBJ I apologise but a emoji is not actually jumping on you

It was a year yesterday since my Dad died . Perhaps I should have stayed away from MN but it was not a spiteful Hmm at all from me .
It is difficult on a screen though to get the sentiment behind it . I admit .
