Am I mad to book a UK break in July

I was meant to be going to Spain in July - now thinking of booking a UK break if only to have a different four walls and view.

Am I mad?

I wouldn’t book anything in case it gets cancelled and you struggle to get your cash back. I’ve an awful feeling some companies will go bust.

Also, when we are allowed to go, there will be lots of great offers, and little booked. Many people will still want to kick themselves away so you should be fine to get a space.

We have booked to go away in our touring caravan end of July but we don’t have to pay deposit so doesn’t matter if we change our mind. We are fully expecting to use our on board facilities for toilet, shower and washing up, take all our food and drink, so hope sites will be open, we generally just go walking so does matter so much about stuff being open and have no children

toomanytrollshere · 15/05/2020 09:04

I've booked a campsite and that's as far as I think things will be open, they said yesterday that outside will he before inside on that BBC update

toomanytrollshere · 15/05/2020 09:05

Also, if terms and conditions say you get a refund if they cancel due to corona restrictions then there is literally no reason to not book it anyway

NotEverythingIsBlackandWhite · 15/05/2020 09:08

I'd hold off and assess the situation nearer the time unless you can easily afford to lose your deposit.

Spied · 15/05/2020 09:10

Yes, completely.

I booked Cornwall for mid August back at the beginning of Feb when it seemed (to me, probably naively) that it would be European hols that wouldn't be possible. I've not heard we can't go yet. It's a self catering equipped villa within a hotel complex. We are going if it's open. Even if I have to do all the cooking myself and just go to beach/walks.

Sauron · 15/05/2020 10:35

We’re due to go away in August to an Air bnb. To us if restaurants etc don’t open we’re not too fussed as two of our children have disabilities and one has an autoimmune disease and a lot of restaurants don’t cater for him. But I think it depends on what you want to be doing when there

Qasd · 15/05/2020 10:42

We have not cancelled a weekend break away in the U.K. in August because we still think it might be possible to get something of a break out of it! Probably wishful thinking and it was booked in January so I did not book it with the pandemic in mind

What’s everyone’s thoughts on whether holidays to Greece will be on at the end of June? We are due to go to a Greek island on 30 June and I am really hoping it will be cancelled as would not be comfortable with travelling then but I am concerned that they will lift the travel ban just before then and it will either be a case of go and be a guinea pig or lose the full cost of the holiday!

ekidmxcl · 15/05/2020 13:32

I wouldn’t.

Communities are not happy receiving outsiders who are potentially spreading the virus.

cotswoldsapple · 15/05/2020 13:39

we have 2 Uk holidays booked in July and Aug and they both got cancelled by the owners already, guess not welcome in the countryside - which is really unfair for so many families in flats-no-garden who'll have spent weeks on end confined

Vitaceae · 15/05/2020 13:41

DH was due to take DD away for a week's holiday last month. That was postponed then last week the holiday firm advised him to cancel it altogether, which he has done Sad

We we're hoping to go away as a family to Cornwall in the Autumn but I don't feel confident trying to book anything yet. I want to leave it this year and hope for next Spring when we might have a better chance of a more normal holiday maybe even with a swimming pool (hopefully).

PuppyMonkey · 15/05/2020 13:42

We’ve got a cottage in the Lakes booked for a week end of August. Have paid deposit and the balance is due early July - not sure if it will go ahead but hopeful.

We’ve got travel insurance thankfully, took it out before all this. Hope were covered whatever happens.Confused

Dadnotamum72 · 15/05/2020 13:48

Booked a hoeseasons park in cornwall the week after lockdown for August on the basis that if holidays are ok by then there will a mad rush so wanted to get in early!

ToffeeYoghurt · 15/05/2020 17:34

They'd better contact the airports to complain then. We've had over 95,000 arrive at the airports during our supposed lockdown so far. No checks, no quarantine, no clue as to where in the UK they're headed.

Rural locals had better stop travelling across the UK also. A couple got stopped travelling from North Wales to Yorkshire the other day. They were picking up a caravan.

ToffeeYoghurt · 15/05/2020 17:35

Apparently we're one of the only countries in the world to not currently have border controls.

Barbie222 · 15/05/2020 18:06

I've cancelled mine (Wales) at the thought of not being able to go anywhere or do anything. We are not hardcore walker picnic types and like a pub lunch.

Bananasandorangesss · 15/05/2020 19:24

**Communities are not happy receiving outsiders who are potentially spreading the virus.

Unfortunately I think that’s right, government restriction aside, it’s the only reason we are not going to our own holiday cottage!

girlofthenorth · 15/05/2020 23:11

@SpiderPlantSally I'm thinking of the ones that have more space- Luckily a couple more me a beautiful sense of space but you haven't thought about the washing up to be honest. If I was just going for a long weekend I wouldn't have a shower but yes DD might moan about that!

girlofthenorth · 15/05/2020 23:13

Ugh typos sorry * near me have a beautiful amount of space
Shock

ceeveebee · 15/05/2020 23:16

We’ve just booked a week in late august in Devon -lots of Airbnb are fully cancellable So no risk. And have moved our Spain hotel booking from August to October (no flights booked yet). Hoping that we will be able to travel by then!

Gertie75 · 15/05/2020 23:43

We're booked to go to a Haven site at the very beginning of July, at the moment they're planning to open then but with no swimming, arcade, clubhouse.

It suits us as I'm not bothered about those, we tend to spend most of our time on the beach.

I'm not getting too excited though as I fully expect the planned reopening to be pushed back and dh can't get any more time off work until after the summer.
