Will social distancing be around for years

frasersmummy · 14/05/2020 18:36

Is this our life now.. Queues outside every shop. Kids no longer in full time education
Family gatherings banned
Theatres dark cinemas closed.

I don't think I could cope mentally if this goes on beyond the end of the summer with no end in sight.

OP posts:

Glad to help @frasersmummy

I thought someone would send me a barrage of scientific proof about why social distancing was a good idea for children. Nothing. Not one argument. Schools should not have to spend money on social distancing measure unless they are guided by science. The government always said that the would be guided by science. Someone show me it!

TinRoofRusty · 14/05/2020 22:34

I mean, I wrote this on another thread, sex never dies. Lockdown has done nothing to deter hookup sites or if you read the affair partner thread, eye opening. Seriously, expecting humans, a social animal, to socially distance for years won't happen. If you're say, a teenager now, do you really think young people are going to socially distance for years to avoid a virus that have an astronomically small chance of killing them? Haahaahaa.

TinRoofRusty · 14/05/2020 22:37

Part time schooling? Completely fucking an entire generation's education for a virus that has a slim chance of killing them (and most people don't, either). Is she fucking for real? That's beyond stupid and throwing young people under a bus. FUCK THAT.

LilacTree1 · 14/05/2020 22:51

Damn - well, it’s a bad thing in that two major misdiagnosed issues have put me off going to the doctor

It’s depressing to feel completely zero faith in the medical profession, especially when my dad was HCP. But when he was dying he also felt the doctors didn’t treat him as human. Bloody power trips they were on.
Nurses and all other HCPs were lovely.

All the organisations who allegedly stand up for children - where are they in this? Children weren’t even allowed outside in some countries.

I’ve noticed human rights organisations are quiet generally.

LilacTree1 · 14/05/2020 22:55

AvenueQ

“ I'm not sure what people are on in GB going so over the top with all this”

It’s because Matt Wancock seems to actually want this to happen.

Also, look how long furlough has been extended. This is a clear indication that many such businesses will not be able to open because social distancing makes or not viable.

Part time schooling is suggested in England.

The German population went on protests as soon as they were able to.

AvenueQ · 14/05/2020 22:58

I've been wondering if they almost want the population to start protesting so they can feel they got the will of the people behind them, where at the moment they feel the people want lockdown?

LilacTree1 · 14/05/2020 23:03

That would make them look weak, giving in to protests.

I think they need to see people ignoring social distancing eg meet your mates in the park, and keep writing to no 10. Copy in local MP but the main thing is No 10.

LilacTree1 · 14/05/2020 23:05

Labour MP on question time trying to say that we shouldnt be allowed to make our own choice about using public transport for non work.

This is TERRIFYING. Please speak up.

Bluewarbler27 · 14/05/2020 23:16

No. I think once the immunity tests become more available that will help massively.

indemMUND · 14/05/2020 23:22

On one hand I'd like social distancing to stay the same... because I can't stand the general public and it's only been made worse now with the ignorant showing their true colours in abundance. But on the other, I'm missing 3 stadium shows due to this and would happily be in a tightly packed crowd of thousands of fellow fans, my kind of people. So yeah... Grin

AgentCooper · 14/05/2020 23:31

I find the pictures of children ‘playing’ while social distancing very odd. Me and my two year old DS go past a primary school that’s open for keyworkers’ DCs every day and the kids in there are playing as normal in the playground. Ok, there are less of them than there would normally be but they’re definitely not standing apart from each other. And there are staff looking on who don’t seem bothered by this. I hope life can get back to normal as soon as possible.

eaglejulesk · 14/05/2020 23:38

Likewise hugging/kissing people you hardly know just because it's the done thing. That kind of completely unnecessary contact can go the way of the Dodo - if people want to do it, fair enough, but let's make it socially acceptable to say no, rather than being forced to look strange.

Yes please!

bombaychef · 14/05/2020 23:42

It will be to some extent as it keeps infections under control

FelineUK · 14/05/2020 23:47

Well judging by the full trains, buses and tubes in London, social distancing is already a thing of the past! I think people will make the call, not government, unfortunately.

LilacTree1 · 14/05/2020 23:51

Feline they aren’t full.

Tfl themselves email daily with an update on how much occupancy has risen. If you want accurate information, it’s there.

LilacTree1 · 14/05/2020 23:51

Well, after tonight’s effective takeover of TFL by government, I don’t know if the email will continue, but you could try it!

FelineUK · 14/05/2020 23:53

Talking of concerts.. I've got a Wigmore Hall concert booked for October.. I jolly well hope that's going to happen - they've already announced they're reopening in July. Will have to go with mask if necessary... I wonder if they'll still have the 2m rule by then? Funny that pre-performance they have a 'no coughing' notice at which point the whole hall coughs furiously.. these days, each person will be looking at their neighbour accusingly, 'Have you got it?!'... ;-)

TheGinGenie · 14/05/2020 23:58

No it won't, we won't stick to it, we'll just get used to living with Covid like humans have with all sorts of infectious diseases for centuries

MissEliza · 15/05/2020 00:00

@TinRoofRusty I'm an LSA and I really worry about the impact a long term period of lockdown and social distancing will have on children, especially in the early years. Little ones have missed out on so much already. At the other end of the spectrum, I have a son just finishing his first year of uni doing a vocational degree where obviously all the content will be put into practical use, unlike eg history. I worry about the impact this has already had on his studies. One module, about using a particular software, had to be abandoned because it was impossible to deliver online. What about all the future engineers/doctors/teachers/scientists who are missing out on their university education?

caringcarer · 15/05/2020 00:03

I just hope we don't have a second spike. Looks like no summer holidays and if we get a second spike in winter NHS will be overwhelmed as flu season. I am just hoping for a vacine. If there is one I would happily pay privately to get it. I get severe asthma and have not been out once since week before lockdown and so fed up. Without vaccine I will not be allowed out.

swazzle2000 · 15/05/2020 00:08

I think a lot of it is scaremongering by the media and pressures for the Government to do something about it. At the end of the day, people need to work. People need to make money to keep a roof over their heads. Grandparents need to see their grandchildren. Kids need to see their parents. We can't go on like this. It'll completely destroy our country. I think it's been blown way out of proportion and we need to get back to normal.

WineLover1234 · 15/05/2020 00:17

@swazzle2000 completely agree!!

LilacTree1 · 15/05/2020 00:30

Caring “ Without vaccine I will not be allowed out.”

You think the government will put shielders in that position? Well, it’s not surprising I guess. Might it be covered by disability discrimination?

LilacTree1 · 15/05/2020 00:32

I’m amazed to hear Wigmore Hall will be open, were large events even on the exit plan?

Can I hold out some hope of the library opening in July?

LilacTree1 · 15/05/2020 00:33

Just looked at Wigmore Hall website
Says reopening September, not July.
