Do you live in a three tier school system area?

Are your year 4s and 8s going back on 1st June? I’m not too interested in whether you would send them back or not but I am genuinely surprised this hasn’t been thought of by DfE when clearly the primary school attending year 6s have had their transitions considered.

Of course year 4s and 8s arent going back..they arent allowed?!

nex18 · 14/05/2020 17:47

My children are in high school of the 3 tier system so doesn’t apply to them but it doesn’t make much sense to have Y6 in at middle school not Y8. Y4 would be trickier as their old first school is quite small.

CarrieBlue · 14/05/2020 17:48

@GeorgieTheGorgeousGoat - I’m genuinely surprised you think the DfE have thought about any of it!

Of course it should be yr4/8 back in 3 tier areas, but that would be expecting the DfE to have looked outside their own bubble of two tier (or prep and senior more likely)

bookmum08 · 14/05/2020 17:48

Tabby Year 4 and 8 are the transition years in the 3 tier system (usually - sometimes it's year 3 and 7). Year 8 is the last year of middle school before high school so it is the same for year 8s in that system as year 6 in the 2 tier.

BunsyGirl · 14/05/2020 18:17

@CarrieBlue where private preps go up to year 6, year 5 is considered to be the most important year as entrance exams are done in the first half of year 6. Year 6 is generally considered to be a more relaxed year. Also, some preps go up to year 8.

Trumpeterwolf · 14/05/2020 18:21

The dfe’s reasoning for yr 6 only even in middle schools is to do with ‘national parity’ for the age group. Whatever that means.
There’s no national parity of other aspects of life!

CarrieBlue · 14/05/2020 18:26

@BunsyGirl - to be honest, it’s of no interest to me how private schools arrange their year groups, but the DfE can’t claim that getting yr6 in is important for transition since yr6 is only transition in terms of sitting SATs in 3 tier.

I'm sorry but I'm totally confused by that. Our primary is reception up to year 2, then juniors yeas 3,4,5,6, then high school starts year 7. Where on earth are the schools that do primary to year 4 and high school start at year 8?

BunsyGirl · 14/05/2020 18:37

@CarrieBlue but you are alleging that the Government decision has been made to reflect “preps”. Clearly, you have a problem with private schools, that’s your business, but you cannot allege that they are behind the Governement’s decision making regarding the re-opening of schools when that is not the case.

3rdtimelucky2019 · 14/05/2020 18:37

Very normal round here.

First school reception - yr 4. Middle school 5-7 High school 8-11

Middle school here still having yr 6 back despite no transition.

Trumpeterwolf · 14/05/2020 18:37

Middle schools!

PrayingandHoping · 14/05/2020 18:40

@TabbyMumz Bedfordshire has the system with middle school

gingercat02 · 14/05/2020 18:41

We had a message from school today (middle school) saying our cohort of schools had written to DfE asking for specific advice for 3 tier.

TabbyMumz · 14/05/2020 18:45

I just cant imagine kids not going to High school till year 8.

Trumpeterwolf · 14/05/2020 18:50

High school starts in year 9 here tabby!

KeithLeMonde · 14/05/2020 18:53

Not official but seen on Facebook that middle schools here have been told they have to take Y6 not Y8. It's ridiculous considering the reasoning for prioritising Y6 nationally - surely that applies equally to our Y4s and Y8s?

Sparklingbrook · 14/05/2020 18:54

We live in a 3 tier area same years as @3rdtimelucky2019, and although having no DC at school any more I did wonder about this. Year 6 means nothing.

TabbyMumz · 14/05/2020 18:58

"Trumpeterwolf

High school starts in year 9 here tabby!"

Bloody hell!!!!

Sparklingbrook · 14/05/2020 18:59

Just checked and the Middle School they went to is taking Year 6 from June 1st in line with 'national parity' as a PP said. Confused

CMOTDibbler · 14/05/2020 19:00

I'm in a middle school area - in my town yr8 is the first year of high school, but the next town its yr9. Apparently they have asked for clarification

bookmum08 · 14/05/2020 19:00

Tabby your schools will be an Infant School, Junior School then Secondary. So technically yes 3 different schools but it's classed as the two tier system as Infant School and Junior schools are counted as one tier (Primary).
The 3 tier system is First School, Middle School then Secondary (High) Secondary with the the school years grouped differently. Not many places in England have the 3 tier system any more so it isn't as well known if you have never lived in an area that has it.

PickUpAPickUpAPenguin · 14/05/2020 19:01

The "plan " in England is Reception, y1 and y6 on 1st June and y2,3,4,5 to attend 2 weeks after that. (He wants all primary kids to have at least 4 weeks before the summer holidays)

Doesn't help y8 in your areas though

GeorgieTheGorgeousGoat · 14/05/2020 22:06

Tabby bit surprised at the aggression to the question! If you don’t live in a three tier system area then it obviously doesn’t apply to you, but in some areas this is really important.

Thanks all, we’re going to have some kids with real pastoral needs in their new schools in September.

TabbyMumz · 15/05/2020 12:01

Aggression? What aggression? I said this...

"Of course year 4s and 8s arent going back..they arent allowed?!"

If you think that's aggression, youd better steer clear of aibu?

Treaclepie19 · 15/05/2020 12:04

We live in a 3 tier system as well. South staffs.
Tabby its 3 completely separate schools. A school from nursery/reception to year 4, then a middle school that is y5 to y8 and finally high school from y9.
Works really well.
