DS has a rash

There’s been a lot in the news about this new syndrome in children. DS (15) has a rash on his chest. He’s had it ‘ages’ (so he says) but I only became aware of it a week or so ago. It doesn’t hurt or itch or seem to be causing him any issues. It looks like a post viral, pin-prick type rash. He has no temperature and seems well in himself (at least as well as a 15yo can be!).

I wouldn’t normally think twice about it, but 2/3 weeks ago he was complaining about dry lips. I have also had some slightly unusual but mild symptoms on and off since the end of March: some tightness in chest, slight discomfort in lungs but no coughing or temperature. Taste disturbances on and off and sore/swollen lips (inside my mouth).

I’m wondering whether I could have had a very mild case of COVID, and whether this could also be what has caused the rash in DS. I don’t think there’s any need to consult the GP as DS is not ‘unwell’ but I’d be interested in whether anyone else has experienced anything similar?

Call your GP/111. I don’t get why you wouldn’t.

Because he literally has no other symptoms and is not ‘unwell’. Eating, drinking normally and seems completely fine. I don’t want to bother them unnecessarily.
I have no faith in 111 but will perhaps call GP just to be on the safe side.

Ideally, you would both get tested. Is there any possibility of that where you live?

fadingfast · 14/05/2020 16:41

I don’t qualify for testing (according to NHS England criteria), and if either of us even had it I suspect we would no longer be positive. I think the rash tends to appear later, and my (very mild) symptoms have been on and off since the end of March. I seem to remember reading somewhere that mild symptoms can linger and fluctuate over several weeks, but that doesn’t mean you are still infectious.

Ok. But it’s bothered you enough to come and ask a bunch of strangers to diagnose/share similar accounts with you, but not enough to call an actual professional to have him checked over?

Could have been done and dusted and hopefully put your mind at ease in a short phone call, rather than waiting around to hear from people on here to respond.

Don’t mean to make you feel like a twat, but if you’re worried, you need to speak to a pro. It’s pretty much what they’re urging people to do, rather than ignore or hope it’s nothing.

Jellybean27 · 14/05/2020 17:25

Ps - I really do hope it’s nothing and he’s ok!

Have you done the glass test?
My gp has a very good email and phone call service. You could email a photo of the rash.

My son same age started with pin prick rash two days ago , just checked on him to find this 'rash' on his elbows he's had a sore head and dry mouth. He is 9 weeks from getting the virus now. I've spoken to 111 who said to monitor him and call back if things get worse and to speak to GP send pictures of rash to them etc

fadingfast · 15/05/2020 11:40

Thanks for that pinkone. Interesting. Does he seem well otherwise? Any temperature?
My DS rash is gradually fading and he's getting really annoyed when I keep asking to check it Grin

Anyone with symptoms can now self-refer if they travel to work?

I'd document the rash (take pictures) and monitor. Not a lot the GP can do except prescribe if needed. But call GP to discuss testing if you can't self-refer.

Thing is, obviously, if you've had covid some time ago, you'll likely test negative.
