Going shopping today, should I wear a mask?

I am going to the supermarket today for my weekly shop. Should I be wearing a mask? What do you think about those who are / aren't wearing them?

Yes, that right @theneverendinglaundry

People conveniently seem to miss out that part of the advice when they’re bashing other people for not wearing them.

WhatPollyForgot · 14/05/2020 10:18

Well,I didn't wear one. I just went early so the supermarket was fairly empty. I also glared menacingly at anyone who got too close.

It appears that most people wearing gloves and masks, and in one case a single use visor, have no clue how to use them effectively.

I can't see the point unless you are going somewhere you are worried won't observe social distancing.

If you think you may have the virus you shouldn't be going out. Masks offer no protection from catching the virus and can make things worse if you're not careful putting them on and taking them off.

Keep you distance and wash your hands are still the best advice.

Catsmother1 · 14/05/2020 10:28

It is recommended that you wear masks or a scarf or similar. A lot of people carry the virus without having symptoms. The point of wearing a mask is that it protects others from catching the virus from you. It gives you a little more protection from catching it too. If everyone wore masks, then the virus would be a lot harder to transmit.

bluebeck · 14/05/2020 10:33

The majority are wearing masks in shops in my area.

Aridane · 14/05/2020 12:42

It would be a considerate thing for you to do to prevent you transmitting it, especially if social distancing isn’t possible

penberrh · 14/05/2020 13:52

I wear one as the practice of social distancing is variable in my supermarket.

Maybe a two metre stick would help. You could poke people who get too close Grin

Would you trust this man with your health and safety? Be careful. Wear a mask. Wash your hands. Keep your distance. Stay safe.

Out of the 40 odd people queuing the the x factor style queue to get into our Tesco today there were 3 people wearing a mask. I shuffled along stood there and counted out of interest. They were all those 'hospital blue' ones with the white straps.

One of them kept taking it off and fiddling with their phone. One of them was sort of sucking it.

I've bought some cotton ones from etsy for me and DH and DD 4 (6). At the moment i can't bring myself to wear one. Thinking about it now and being honest I would/will if a third or more of other people are wearing them.

Laiste · 14/05/2020 15:11

What do i think of people not wearing one? Nothing.
What do i think of people wearing one? .... a passing interest. You notice them around here because it is less than 1 in 10 doing it. If i thought anything it would be that perhaps they are more fearful or organised than me.

GoatyGoatyMingeMinge · 14/05/2020 15:13

Should I be wearing a mask?
They're about as much use as a bunch of lavender in 1347 against the bubonic plague!

What do you think about those who are / aren't wearing them?
Except in this sense Grin

LindainLockdown · 14/05/2020 15:29

I went shopping this morning and was surprised there were less mask wearers than last week, around a quarter had masks. No one blinks an eyelid if you are wearing one, no one gave me a dirty look because I wasn't. Just do what you think is best.

GoatyGoatyMingeMinge · 14/05/2020 15:31

No one blinks an eyelid if you are wearing one, no one gave me a dirty look because I wasn't.

Ah, but we judge inwardly.

Thighmageddon · 14/05/2020 15:36

I'll be wearing one when I go on public transport or in to a small shop.

Hopefully it'll help those feel a bit safer around me with my hay fever induced sneezing, if I had the covid germs and I was on a bus I'd have infected all the passengers by now Blush

megletthesecond · 14/05/2020 15:39

Yes, wear one. The more people who wear them the sooner we might get through this.

LindainLockdown · 14/05/2020 15:41

Well who gives a fuck about "being judged inwardly". No one knows you are doing it and it probably harms you more than the person you are judging. Good one.

theneverendinglaundry · 14/05/2020 15:50

@bananasandororangesss my friend caught it in a supermarket, before lockdown when everyone was panic buying and it was packed to the rafters in there.

Bananasandorangesss · 14/05/2020 17:50

@theneverendinglaundry that’s exactly how I caught it - just after lockdown when people were panic buying still and was v difficult to maintain social distancing your username is exactly how I feel btw Grin

GreytExpectations · 14/05/2020 18:06

People need to read the guidelines properly and not just read what they want to see. The guidelines state a mask is reccomended when you cannot maintain a social distance of 2 metres wear one if you want but you people need to stop spreading incorrect information

RichardMarxisinnocent · 14/05/2020 19:15

I just wore one (handmade by me from an old pillowcase and some ribbons) to my local supermarket because hardly anyone in there bothers to make any effort to keep 2m away. There were some others wearing them, mostly surgical masks, but also one which looked like a decorator's mask and one whick appeared to be a fabric one with a valve of some sort.
