Would you attend a routine hospital appointment now??

Myself and my child, both have Asthma. We haven't left our house since March 22nd. We live in the middle of nowhere and get our shopping delivered.

My child had his appendix removed before xmas, and went into anaphylaxis shock in theatre....so he was referred to a large city childrens hospital for allergy testing. He has had some tests (household allergies and anesthetic), in February.
Now the hospital want to test him with penicillin, in the next few weeks.

So my question is would you attend an appointment in a high risk area or would you try and defer the appointment?

The nurse said it's very safe and people haven't got it there! But you can't guarantee this.

I know he needs it doing but will it be worth the risk right now.

And I'm a HCP also, 3 of my colleagues have just been off with Covid and they did NOT work in the 'hot zone'.
Make of that what you will.

Urgent medical problem- yes go get sorted
Routine testing - absolutely not

Lilac, in the unlikely event that a shielded child developed a bacterial infection, there are many alternatives to penicillin available

Yes, definitely. I'm going in for my 12 week scan in a couple of weeks.

They wouldn't have asked you to come in if they hadn't (with the benefit of knowing more about what the situation in the hospital is than you) decided the risk was too great.

Yes I would we are waiting for things to resume so my DS can get assessed for autism , he's also waiting on speech and language sessions to start.
I am also waiting to hear on whether I am able to have an appointment to see a consultant about my split stomach muscles and whether they would operate.

I think life needs to start to resume again we can't be holed up forever.

A 12 week scan is different - can’t wait as time specific. You may find that the appointment is just to discuss the allergy testing rather than do it. ( which could be done over the phone).

There are alternatives to penicillin and I think hospitals will be safer in a few weeks time.

I’ve had covid ( despite being in a green/clean zone) and the 5 year old daughter of a colleague is in ITU post covid.

OP asked for honest opinions.

Lilac tree1 - perhaps the MN HCP have seen first hand what an awful disease this is and how many of us have caught it just by being in the hospital.

PissOffStayAtHomeDogMum · 14/05/2020 09:33

Yes, I would go.

LilacTree1 · 14/05/2020 11:40

olympics it’s just funny because the only HCP I know in real, life are more concerned about what git dropped because of covid, and what the over reaction will mean in other ways.

One is on a covid ward but as HCP, she was aware that pandemics occur and people die. Thank goodness there’s common sense somewhere.

I know of an elderly man who went into hospital, covid section to get tested, as he had a cough, a bad one. Came back negative so he was placed in a non covid ward with others. Chest X ray showed pneumonia and was in for 5 days. BUT he failed to be honest and tell them he had also lost his taste and smell, had chest pain, high temperature, short of breath, sore throat and tiredness for the previous 4 days at home before going to hospital. All those symptoms point to covid, so presumably false negative.

This type of situation is the reason why I would not go to hospital at the moment, unless life threating. I think op aslong as your ds does not need antibiotics atm then I would wait.

Yes I just spent over a week in there and cleaning and PPE were well handled.from what I could see. Better do it now incase there is a second wave and they are harder to get. P.s I happened to have a reaction to a drug in hospital as well but they soon sorted me out.

Aridane · 14/05/2020 12:39

Yes, and did recently

All,staff wore masks

And masks given to patients, hand sanitiser and temperature checks before entering the main part of the hospital
