Are you able to pay all your bills/mortgage/rent?

Do you think you will have a job come November?

OP posts:
Waxonwaxoff0 · 13/05/2020 21:21

I'm furloughed on 80%. Still able to pay all bills as I'm a single parent so am now receiving some housing benefit to cover most of the income I'm losing.

Will I have a job in November? Unsure at the moment. My workplace is open but there's hardly any work. Only about 20% of the staff are needed right now. As I'm the most junior staff member and my job can easily be done by someone else if their own workload is light, I'll probably be first out the door.

DH is new self employed after 44 years PAYE. As a hairdresser he’s not permitted to work now until at least 4th July which will mean over 3 months at least with no work and no financial assistance. We’ve got a mortgage holiday but it means we’re having to use our retirement savings to live on. We’re 60 so didn’t want to be doing that at this stage of our lives.

Dotty02 · 13/05/2020 23:51

We seem to be living in our overdraft...dp getting 80% of wage and I'm say at home mum but it is what it is..I guess.

MelanieFrontage · 13/05/2020 23:52

I’m really fortunate that I’ve not been affected so far, I’ve been working from home for about 10 years now.

I can’t begin to imagine how it is for people that aren’t long time home workers.

Saladd0dger · 13/05/2020 23:53

Husband has been furloughed 80%. Losing nearly £500 a month. I’m still working but all the temps have been given the hours so no overtime for permanent staff. A few of us are losing out that way and are on low contracts.

Spacerader · 13/05/2020 23:53

I feel so lucky that my finances have ot been impacted. Dp is still in work, I am off on full pay, and while off i have taken on some extra work on the weekends so am actually earning more.

I do know I am one of the lucky ones who hasn't had to struggle

CloudsCanLookLikeSheep · 13/05/2020 23:53

Furloughed on 100% currently, but my job is reasonably secure. Theres a slight chance I'll be made redundant but I'll be helping to make others redundant first, so I'd be last to switch off the lights on the way out.

Saving like mad in case.

ChrissieKeller61 · 13/05/2020 23:56

Lost £40,000 in billing’s on day one, I’m a recruiter 4 offers pulled .... at least 12 people were left without jobs

Boltouttheblue · 13/05/2020 23:57

I've had a 15% paycut and DH 20%. DH has also been told he'll be made redundant in August. My salary is not enough to cover all our outgoings so we will need to dip into our savings each month which is ok for now but we can only do that for so long. It's unlikely that DH will get another job before next year. Ultimately more than 6 months of DH being unemployed and we're screwed.

Babyroobs · 14/05/2020 00:01

Not impacted at the moment, both working from home and being paid in full. Saving money on wfh by saving car park costs, dog walking costs and petrol costs. Able to pay all bills. Two teenage sons both furloughed from part time jobs although one yet to receive any money. Ds1 home from Uni so more costs there and we still have to pay for his Uni accommodation. I don't expect to have a job come Dec when our charity funding is up for renewal - the charity that funds us is losing huge amounts of fund raising revenue. Dh's job could be at risk as related to the oil trade.

EvolvingElle · 14/05/2020 00:03

We seem to be in the minority but we’re far better off and I feel very thankful atm. Saving a fortune on petrol as no work/school runs and even on shopping as we’ve been forced to meal plan for a week rather than buying bits.

DH is a SAHD and I’m wfh on full salary plus unlimited overtime at double rate as my employer is overrun with work. Pretty sure my job is secure long term.

Dotty02 · 14/05/2020 00:26

Sorry should of added we have been spending more on jobs ect around the home also things to make the children occupied....not affected the way we live though with I'm grateful for.

marriednotdead · 14/05/2020 04:05

I’m one of the few people that’s slightly better off. On a low salary normally with high commuting costs so live frugally to avoid debt I can’t clear, been like that since divorce. Low rent. Most clothes etc from charity shops.

Now I’m on 80% furlough, the financial drop without fares is negligible. Barely using car either so saved on fuel, only been shopping for food. Have been able to clear what was left on my credit card and owe nothing.
Need some —bigger— clothes when the charity shops reopen!

BritWifeinUSA · 14/05/2020 04:09

I work in aviation and have lost over 60% of my income. It was either take a huge cut or redundancy. Now is not the time to be redundant in any industry, but least of all aviation.

Bubblebee7 · 14/05/2020 04:39

My job is secure & I’m really grateful. I’m still able to manage I have saved on DC usual actives so saving a lot more than normal.

linelgreen · 14/05/2020 05:36

I would say I am better off still in work so no drop In pay, car parking pay machines suspended so no parking to pay for, less traffic so using less fuel, no shops open for impulse purchases, no eating or drinking out to socialise so estimate £800ish per month better off. Don't want it to continue though just want to go back to normality fir everyone's sake.

Oysterbabe · 14/05/2020 05:36

We're better off for now as saving £1000 a month on nursery fees. However we both fear for the future of our jobs. Our companies are soldiering on for now but it feels precarious. We're saving as much money as we can.

Flipflopflapflip · 14/05/2020 05:57

I’m worse off as still working (nhs) but paying £600ish a month more in childcare as grandparents no longer able to help. Ok for now as using savings but longer term may need to quit and go on benefits.

LostJobtoday · 14/05/2020 06:07

This time yesterday I had a secure, busy, professional job.

By 3.30 pm I had lost it.

Utterlydespairing · 14/05/2020 06:08

I got a pay rise because of all the extra work I’ve been doing throughout.

madcatladyforever · 14/05/2020 06:21

I cant believe how lucky I've been given other people's hardship. I just feel so sorry for all of you who are struggling.
I resigned from my last job and had a year off with no income to have major surgery and recover properly.
I had just run out of money when I landed a new NHS job after 4 failed interviews and coronavirus broke out.
If that hadn't have happened when it did I'd have lost my house and had to go onto universal credit.

Dontknowhowtohelp1 · 14/05/2020 06:23

The people doing extra work / overtime, what industries are you in?

I have been out of work throughout lockdown due to the fact that I was temping when it started. We (single parent with three teens) have been living off the money I got when my car was written off, but that has nearly run out and I am looking for permanent work. Am scared of public transport (London) but finding somewhere I can walk or drive to (ex has lent us an old car of his) is going to be difficult. I am very lucky not to have housing costs, and that has really helped.

Harrykanesrightsock · 14/05/2020 06:26

Both me and DH still working. We are spending much more on food as both adult children are back from university but no social spends has just about equalled it out. I do know we are so lucky and feel incredibly sad for anyone with the extra worry of finances on top of all of this.

pumpkinpie01 · 14/05/2020 06:35

We are very lucky atm and I feel so sorry for others. I am furloughed at the moment first month on 100% 2nd month 80. My Dh is classed as a key worker ( although his work is quieter than usual) they have been given bonus 's for doing overtime.

BikeRunSki · 14/05/2020 06:37

DH is doubtful that he’ll have a business in a few weeks. He employs 60 ish people.
