Schools opening in the summer holidays!

GAVIN WILLIAMSON confirmed the Department of Education is looking into the possibility of propping up summer schools to help pupils catch up with their work after the pandemic.

It seems that after ruling out using the summer holidays to allow the children to catch up, it is now firmly back on the table!

What a positive development - will you send your child to school over the summer?

Yes I think its fine that those who are shielding catch up somehow.

You said this should be by catching up from their friends.

I honestly don't think you're putting any thought into your answers.

Siriusmew · 13/05/2020 22:11

It's clear from some of these posts that @ITonyah knows absolutely nothing about the state schools system.

ITonyah · 13/05/2020 22:12

I am sure some will catch up from friends. I'm not sure you know much about year 10s if you think that isn't how they do things.

Anyway, its encouraging to see some state schools are at least trying it.

I think there is going to be an awful public backlash against teachers and unions over this which is a real shame as there are so many excellent teachers out there.

Rhubardandcustard · 13/05/2020 22:13

Yep think it’s good idea. My dd should have been sitting her first lot of gcse this week. It’s been v hard to motivate her to do any prep work for a levels as she does think what’s the point been working so hard for gcse and it’s all just taken away.

Would love schools to run over the summer maybe part time 4 hours a day just morning or afternoons would be fab. Would get them back into the study mindset and routine they badly need.

ITonyah · 13/05/2020 22:14

Siriusmew all mine went to state primary, one to state secondary until year 9 and one to state 6th form. I know enough to be glad my teens are out of it at the moment!

Surely noone can disagree with this?!

Blueemeraldagain · 13/05/2020 22:17

@ITonyah

Because I am realistic. In deprives parts of southeast London, schools are not going to be overrun with high quality volunteers. They’re not overrun with high quality teachers! Schools like mine are even less likely to attract high quality volunteers. To be honest, it wouldn’t happen. No one would offer.

@ITonyah I think there is going to be an awful public backlash against teachers

We have a recruitment and retention problem at the moment so it looks like it will get a lot worst and class sizes will have to increase again then

bigbananafeet12 · 13/05/2020 22:19

@tessiegirl that’s amazing. I have a year 10 and am really interested in this. Do you think all schools are planning on doing this?

StaffAssociationRepresentative · 13/05/2020 22:20

Probably plenty of volunteers for primary but secondary will be a different kettle of fish

Siriusmew · 13/05/2020 22:20

I am sure some will catch up from friends. I'm not sure you know much about year 10s if you think that isn't how they do things I have a DC in year 10. Are all year 10's uniform? Or are they either hard workers or slackers>

Anyway, its encouraging to see some state schools are at least trying it Aw fanks hun.

As many many posters have pointed out, and you have ignored as you seem to be on some form of 'save the poor, thick, unmotivated state school children' mission, but lots of children have been engaging with online learning, should they then work straight through until christmas?

ITonyah · 13/05/2020 22:21

Blueemeraldagain I appreciate you are being realistic about your own circumstances and school. But not all state schools are the same. Perhaps some could manage it.

Or maybe no-one thinks its worth trying. What a shame to not even entertain it as an idea.

ITonyah · 13/05/2020 22:22

If they've had lots of online teaching and haven't missed anything then of course not.

The key word is "possibility". It won't happen. They won't get the volunteers, that won't get the teaching staff.

Gav is just trying to look as if he's doing something.

echt · 13/05/2020 22:24

They, not that. Jesus.Blush

ITonyah · 13/05/2020 22:26

Siriusmew that post was posted by a state school parent, and theres been a few saying they think its a good idea. Why not argue with them about it? It doesn't affect me one way or another!

StaffAssociationRepresentative · 13/05/2020 22:26

If there is any summer opening it should just be for those disadvantaged students who are on the school register. That way it can be targeted support for those who need it most and we can then focus on closing the gap.

CallmeAngelina · 13/05/2020 22:31

Do you know what? I don't give a flying fuck.

CallmeAngelina · 13/05/2020 22:32

I'd love to be a fly on the wall when all those parents who are on here complaining that they can't get their kids to do a scrap of work at home at the moment, break the news to those same kids that they've signed them up to three weeks of Summer School in August. Grin

Nicedayforawedding · 13/05/2020 22:32

Gavin Williamson is full of BS.

They will have enough trouble trying to manage schools opening in June and July let alone trying to recruit staff to work over the summer.

I would also be dubious about the value of having a graduate with no teaching experience teaching my child. Seems all very sketchy and strange.

bigbananafeet12 · 13/05/2020 22:34

I’d volunteer on my days off work.

bigbananafeet12 · 13/05/2020 22:37

My Year 10 ds has been doing the online learning but misses school. He’d go in. Year 8 dd is also trying hard with the work set but would absolutely be desperate to go.

ITonyah · 13/05/2020 22:39

Do you know what? I don't give a flying fuck not even about the kids whose parents think have been let down?

StaffAssociationRepresentative · 13/05/2020 22:45

Happily do so for the disadvantaged kids in order to close the gap because that is where the issue is

StaffAssociationRepresentative · 13/05/2020 22:46

but not so that Henry's mum can get her roots done
