Herd Immunity?

I've seen a number of posters talking about the UK now aiming for herd immunity, is this actually proven?
From what I've read this is still debatable and immunity at the moment can last anything from weeks to a year maximum.
This is dependent on how sick you were and the viral load.
Does anyone have any evidence that this is actually possible?

We don't know about how enduring immunity is after the disease - if it's related to severity or some other feature, if it offers full or partial protection (ie you still get it but it's milder each time)

Herd immunity might come about if immunity is indeed good enough, and after a period of time during which the proportion of the population who have had it gently increases (ie much the same as the Mother Nature version, only with the exponential growth dampened down.

Or it might come when enough of the population is vaccinated

Or if it never comes, because it turns out that this is a disease to which we are uniquely and perpetually vulnerable, then societynas we know it has to change drastically

We should be thankful we are in a position to debate this and float the option of herd immunity - based on how we’ve responded to this, if Covid was a disease with a Ebola fatality rate it would be the end of civilisation as we know it.
