Why not just repeat the school year?

I've been thinking this from the start, what not just repeat the school year and start again in September.

So for example a current Y2 child would start Y2 again in September

They could spend the first few months going over what they've done before lockdown and then move on to the curriculum which was missed/learned during lockdown with minimal support.

Y11/13 would get to do their exams with full preparation, not relying on predicted grades.

Y2/6 would get to do their SATS (although the question of whether they mean fuck all is for another thread)

No issues with transition and missing our on preparation for that for FS1, Y2, Y6

Is there a downside I'm.not seeing?

The new reception children who are expecting to start in September - they would have no where to go.

And really - I wouldn't want my children repeating a year- it would mean the whole system is behind a year forever- you would never catch up.

Yes as above, there would be two Reception cohorts and there is simply not enough space for all these children to go.

Also, higher up, this potentially means students starting university a year later (which may happen anyway to an extent) - which may seem like a non-issue, but then in a few years time you won't have a cohort of newly qualified doctors and nurses, which obviously poses its own problems.

WoWsers 16 is right - the starting school age would have to go up a year which is not ideal for lots of families. I also don't want my children to repeat a year.

And who is going to fund all these kids having an extra year in school?

Will my two year 9s' bus and taxi fares be subsidised? (A few thousand pounds)?

Will I get a grant for a year of extra uniform and sports kit, usually costing up to 1k?

Will school dinners be paid for for an additional year? £160 per month

Will my boss be ok saying I can't work full-time yet for another year? Am waiting until they finish school as I have to do some drop offs/pickups (for complicated reasons).

And that's just one family with two kids.
It isn't practical.

Also the govt would never go for ot because of the additional cost

Yes as others said it would mean everyone was a year behind in years to come when hopefully we have a vaccine and all this mess is over

There'd be a point they would have to merge two years. Otherwise schooling would have to start and finish a year later permanently.

What are you going to do with the 4 year olds who should be the reception intake in Sep?

What do you propose happens without a year intake in universities?

Do you really think kids want to repeat a year?

We could change the beginning of the school year to January.
Have them go back this September in their current year group and then move up after Christmas.

You are not thinking about the knock on effect. What do I do with my 4 year old who is due to start Reception in September?
