Why do they make announcements so late with no time for clarification

It's so frustrating that they have timed it this way. I know they said more details will come out tomorrow, but that's a bit late for those who suddenly have to go back to work in the morning.

Notice will do something for some people. Nor every one needs childcare.

But yes it does have to thought about. If you can work wfh I think you will be expected to wfh and have the kids.

Hopefully there will be something in the guidence.

My employer is unfurloughing in stages and speaking to everyone individually. Those with childcare that absolutely can't sort anything and those who are sheilding, until last.

There needs to be more.

He did not say go to work tomorrow he said people who cannot work from home should be 'actively encouraged' to go to work. No sensible employer would demand full attendance by today. But then- plenty of employers are NOT sensible employers as demonstrated upthread with a PP's DH being instructed to attend at 8 am!

I think it was always a given that employers were going to reopen now.

Many had already prepared their staff to come in. I’d had some wardrobes being fitted and it was delayed due to this, and they emailed me a few days ago saying they were reopening their office on the 11th.

Companies obviously have to be realistic for when they can get the staff in, but for most it’s this week or next for them to reopen. They’ve had two months to work out how to do it, Ie who can work from home, how to ensure safety etc, it’s not exactly complicated.

A more detailed plan will emerge today and over the coming days. Last night was just a high level summary, a heads up so to speak.

The only ones to stay closed will be the non essential shops, hospitality etc, which will be clarified later.

My theory (purely a theory) is that childcare and mixing of households were purposefully not mentioned. Government knows people will need childcare, they don't want to reopen schools etc yet, so they just don't mention it and assume people will use family/friends. That still keeps the mixing of households lower than if it were allowed for everyone. And those who have noone to ask just hope their employer is supportive.

Or maybe there will be more guidance today. Who knows...

Are parents who can't leave their children alone going to lose their jobs? Will there be some sort of paid parental leave allowed?

This will be down to the individual employer. Some will be able to give unpaid leave for a short period, others will need their staff in. So yes if schools aren’t open many will loose their jobs.

Hence why primaries and nurseries start opening from June, as it will limit those job losses. June is only two weeks away, and the years going back will be phased. As such most employers will be able to give some form of leave or work from home ability until the year group required goes back.

This is clearly not the case, the very obvious plan is primary schools and primary and below child care starts opening from the first of June in a staged approach, to be fully operational by the end of the month to enable people to go back to work.

They want you off furlough.
But unless you've got enough orders, there's no point starting manufacturing again.

BeltaneBride · 11/05/2020 07:15

For people saying employers can on get it in place overnight, of course they will have been preparing! In my school, SMT are preparing for the green light to be ready to go as soon as the Gvt says go.
So yes perfectly reasonable for the posters DH to be told to come into work today/ if the employer is geared up. Lucky him to have an employer still in business.

SquashedFlyBiscuit · 11/05/2020 07:21

Are lots of people working school hours only then , that opening up the schools is so vital for childcare?

Peggysgettingcrazy · 11/05/2020 07:22

This is true. We are reopening as are all our customers. Which are all big employers.

Employers still have to implement social distancing/PPE. That takes time.

The example of the dh being told to go back with 12 hours notice is worrying.

Because either they have the changes in place, ready to go. But for some reason decided not to open (even though they didn't need to close), they clearly have work to do. And why didn't they let him know this last week. That everything was in place and he would be returning soon.

Or they haven't got everything in place and expecting people back regardless.

Either way sounds like they didn't need to furlough him. Opening a business is far harder than closing it. If you are doing it properly. Doing it on a Sunday night is really really odd.

People who work for us have to do on line training, regarding the new policies. We couldn't bring them all back at the drop of a hat, because we had to build work up. So some are back and building the work, then some more come back, building the work up and so on.

We technically didn't have to close but 99% of our customers did close. Some of our staff remenained working as we worked on nightingale and part of the business is fire safety and security.

Trying to organise reopening, who was opening when, where the work was priority, who was coming back, new policies etc take time.

But you are aware that they have been preparing. And schools have been expected to open, to some degree.

The dh just hearing out of the blue and heading in with no idea if or what they have put in place or where the work is coming from, actually isn't ok.

Snorkelface · 11/05/2020 07:27

But the message remains that if you can work from home you should still be working from home, so if you have been working from home you should still be working from home. The furlough scheme also currently runs until the end of June, with talk of it being extended into July, and so there's also no reason for any employer to force anyone to return who can remain under that scheme.

Peggysgettingcrazy · 11/05/2020 07:30

Apparently, its been clarified this morning. The return to work is meant to be from Wednesday at the earliest. I think it was Dominic Rabb.

I didnt see it but Piers Morgan is banging on about it now.
