Queuing experiences

So far, we’ve had really good, clear lining up experiences at shops. Generally queue spacers marked out and a one in, one out policy. No problem.

Today I’ve just had the worst experience at the Range.

When we got to the range there were about 5 people in the queue. DH and I have been gardening and not in our nicer clothes. I am wearing leggings, trainers and a short T-Shirt.

Although customers were periodically leaving the Range, there was no sign of anyone letting people in. We stood and waited for about 20 minutes, until finally someone came to the door and let the queue of five people in front of us in. There was no one behind us and I’m shivering like mad as it’s cold, but the Range employee stops us going into the store and tells us we have to wait.

We continue to stand for about another 20 minutes. I wanted to leave, but DH needs garden edging to finish the job. We see the five people who had gone in to the store all periodically leave and we’re still stood there. DH saying ‘any minute now, it’s got to be’.

No queue behind us still, so we’re literally waiting in the car park on our own. No one is coming out of store anymore.

About 10 more minutes passed and I am so freaking cold. Employee finally comes out and tells us we can go in.

The store is empty! Not another customer in sight.

We pick up the garden edging strip and head for the tills. A lady employee is practically following us. I spot a peg/pin for a rotary washing line on the way, to fix the line into the ground and pick it up to read the box and see how it works (our line is leaning too far over). This employee literally yells at me for picking up the box and touching things. I was stunned. Put it back. I paid for our strip and left.

Absolutely horrible experience at the Range and won’t be going back. I’ve no problem with the lines and rules and most places make them work well, but dreading the future if this is what it’s going to get like.

How’s everyone else’s experiences been?

It's the greedy company's that have deliberately bypassed things in order to stay open. Certain shops like Tesco Asda, garages etc are needed to provide food. Sport direct tried to continue to operate and informed staff they were essential for exercise equipment but were forced to close. Wetherspoons is another company trying it on to reopen earlier after treating their staff abysmally. Shops like homebargins B&M the range arent needed but remained open as they sell food. Like a said the range ensured they stayed open by getting fridges and freezers. Yet people continue to flock for them and they are making a mint through excessive buying for gardening and DIY. They put profits above staff.

@Oknobutok

I completely accept people’s replies. I’m just not sure what I can do about it at this point?

I accept its not their fault I was not dressed appropriately.

I accept that I did not need to be there at all.

I maintain that I would struggle to know if I need a particular product without looking at the description ...but I accept that I should perhaps not have been browsing that product and should have grabbed the edging and gone.

I accept that shop workers are stressed and working in unfamiliar territory.

I ranted on the internet. I’ve been told I’m in the wrong. I shall have to look at how we do things (unless guidance changes this evening).

What else would you like me to do?

@RedRed9

I can understand that, thank you

@burnoutbabe

Good idea and I would have been more than happy to have done that if it had been suggested.

I’ll certainly bare it in mind going forward though.

Thank you.

@AllsortsofAwkward

Thank you for that. I just assumed they were open for the gardening stuff. Gardening seems to be ‘the thing’ at the moment, with everyone staying at home.

I wasn’t planning to go back there anyway, but will certainly bare what you said in mind.

DIY stores were allowed to stay open. My local Range store doesn't have freezers but sells DIY stuff so it's allowed to be open. It doesn't take 2 grown adults to go to a shop. A lot of stores say 1 adult to 1 trolley so I don't see why you both needed to be there

DBML · 10/05/2020 16:51

@dementedpixie

As I have said, there is no signage that says that at the Range or even my local supermarkets to think of. I have read some signage that allows for a maximum of 50 people in store at a time, but nothing about 1 person per trolley.

I will bare this in mind going forward though.

UnmightyBoosh · 10/05/2020 16:52

You didn’t both need to be there and you shouldn’t randomly be touching things

I haven’t been to any shops since March and I know this, how do you not?

Oknobutok · 10/05/2020 16:54

I actually don't feel picking up products is a huge deal. I'm a vegetarian and I need to check products sometimes for ingredients. Especially as at the moment as I'm buying what is available so sometimes different from my normal stuff.

I think what is essential or not is a grey area as a clothes line could be essential and I do think you need to touch it to see if it's right for you.

I think I was a bit ratty before in my posts. Just I hope this has made you consider what is essential. I also think the range staff have not been very happy about staying open as far as I know.

DBML · 10/05/2020 16:54

@unmightyboosh

Not sure. I must just be a terrible person.

@Oknobutok

The point you made was quite fair. I will certainly rethink things going forward. I was not aware of the pressures the Range staff were being put under, but as a key worker, I can understand.

Thank you for taking the time to post.

😂

I like you OP.

Also, who knows what will happen with shops after tonight’s briefing. From tomorrow morning you might be allowed to go in pairs to pick up gardening bits.

DBML · 10/05/2020 17:08

@Redred9

Perhaps I’ve just been 7 weeks ahead all along! (blushing)

Thank you Red! Made me smile 😊

OP I am so impressed with how you have taken on board comments on this thread!

ifonly4 · 10/05/2020 17:17

I work in a shop, we're down 50% in staff constantly due to isolating or shielding. We have a lot less customers but extra duties like disinfecting, standing on door and as we've had to close off part of store for security, having to get items for customers. On top of this, we have breaks and not enough to us to cover those. It's not easy for staff, customers but it's something we'll have to get used to, waiting and sometimes in the cold or heavy rain.

OP, not having a go, but couples and families going together, do mean it takes longer for everyone else.

DBML · 10/05/2020 17:20

@sittingonacornflake

Not sure if that’s a bit of sarcasm or not, but just incase, people have made some fair and reasonable points and I’d be daft not to take them on board. If you’re just being nice, thank you, I appreciate that :)

@ifonly4

Yes, it’s a fair point @ifonly4.
I hadn’t given it enough thought previously, but I will bare shop staff in mind moving forward I promise.

I have been to B&M a couple of times (well, the other time I walked off)

The first time was ridiculous, queue only about 12 deep but took 45 minutes, people were coming out but no one was allowed in. The guy seemed to be taking great pleasure in being able to lock the doors and stop people.

The last time, queue three times as long, different guy on the door, took half the time.

The government has said if the shop is open then you can buy what's inside.

middleager · 10/05/2020 17:34

OP, I went to my first shop (M&S food hall) this week since lockdown began and had quite the baptism of fire.

I didn't really know the etiquette either.

The queue outside was well organised, it was about half hour.

There was a couple in front of me, but I never thought to question this either.

Inside the man in the couple came close to me and reached over me to grab something!

Inside everyone was also shopping as normal! Any direction, no gaps, No social distancing in place. This was alarming - my first experience, but maybe if they've all been shopping for weeks like that they've become desensitised or emboldened by their face masks.

I won't be returning. I brushed shoulders with many, despite my best attempts, yet I can't see family members from a distance?

DBML · 10/05/2020 17:40

Yes @middleager

There are fewer people in the shops, but certainly not all are social distancing. I wear a mask and gloves, but I wouldn’t reach over people. I wait at the end of the aisle and only move, when the person has finished shopping and left that aisle.

I do pick up boxes to check information and have been putting them back. Gloved of course, but after this thread I’ll try not to do that anymore.

I have noticed people get close to me and I will tend to just move away or stop and let them pass more quickly.

I feel a bit hypocritical now saying that people are getting more complacent, but I have definitely noted this recently.

sittingonacornflake · 10/05/2020 17:43

Totally genuine! I'm nice! Promise!

DBML · 10/05/2020 17:49

@sittingonacornflake

In that case, thank you sitting! That’s really kind of you 😊

I wish shops had consistent rules. Wilko seem to be restricting numbers to single figures in their store here, it has the longest and slowest queue. The same number of people shopping in B&M but they are all allowed in, nobody on the door at that time. And I'd willingly pay for a spycam on the queue at our Asda so I can see how long it is and then dress/plan appropriately (almost sunburnt yesterday!)
