If I deregister my Yr 6 child to homewchool what happens to his Yr11 school place?

Apologies if this has been asked before, I couldn't find a thread on it.
DS is Yr 6 so will be starting Senior School in September assuming they are open.
If I decide to de register him to home school him until then, doe anyone know what happens to his school place? Would I automatically lose it and have to re apply?
I'm not saying this is what I will definitely do but I am just mulling over my options.

You mean, if you deregister him from primary school, will he lose his secondary school place?

I would have thought that they’re two separate things, but I’m no expert.

Aesopfable · 10/05/2020 13:29

You might be best putting this in the secondary school topic - there are experts there (Corona is not really relevant). I would think if it were clear you were just removing until end of term them your secondary application is still valid but you would want to be very clear before you did it - I would want reassurance in writing.
Why deregister anyway? Can’t you simply write to the school and say you are not doing their work? Or do you mean if schools go back?

MinorArcana · 10/05/2020 13:30

Maybe you could try asking in one of the education topics too? The people who know lots about school admissions might be more likely to see your question there.

Bunnybigears · 10/05/2020 13:32

So you dont want him to go to school until Y11, GCSE year?

WhatIsGinLiqueurAnyway · 10/05/2020 13:48

I was in this exact situation a few years ago. I deregistered my son in yr 6, he still got his offer for secondary school, just as if he had stayed in primary till July. No need to worry if you want to deregister at this stage. I deregistered in February, btw.

ChrissieKeller61 · 10/05/2020 14:54

You’ll be fine, I presume you mean his place when he’s aged 11 at senior school ? Mine were at private school until year 7 when I had to renter the system, we got a place no problem at all

MrsWombat · 10/05/2020 15:58

You would be fine. However, I would let both schools know what you are doing for clarity so they know where his files etc are going. I doubt you'll be the only one doing this.

LittleRa · 10/05/2020 16:01

Do you mean his Y7 place?

TheOnlyLivingBoyInNewCross · 10/05/2020 16:01

What is the significance of Yr 11 in your thread title?

BrieAndChilli · 10/05/2020 16:12

What’s the intention behind deregistering him?? As far as we are aware there probably isn’t going to be any school until September anyway??

Abbccc · 10/05/2020 16:15

If you de-- register you will have to apply again, regardless of what year you want him to go in to. If you de-register you no longer have a school place.

HorsesDoovers · 12/05/2020 08:19

Hi OP here (name changed)
So sorry for the confusion. I was very tired when I wrote that thread and made a complete hash of itBlush
For clarity, my DS is currently in Year 6. I am considering home schooling him until he goes to Senior School in September. My understanding is that if you are home schooling your child, you have to de register them. So my question is, if I go ahead, will I then have to re apply for his Yr 7 place.
Thanks.

TheOnlyLivingBoyInNewCross · 12/05/2020 08:23

I don't think you need to deregister him. Although the intention is to get Yr 6 back into school after half-term, the government has said that fines will not be issued to parents who chose not to send their children in.

He will miss the transition period but if you were intending to homeschool him, I don't think you're concerned about that, so just keep him at home until September. You won't be the only one!

DippyAvocado · 12/05/2020 08:24

I wouldn't bother deregistering until you find out if the government plan to fine Year 6s that don't attend when the school opens up. There are so many people that won't won't want to send their kids in that I think that will be very unlikely.

HorsesDoovers · 12/05/2020 08:39

OK thank you. I do have concerns about him missing the transition period and I am undecided about whether this is the best option, I wonder how much transition will actually happen in practise? I am going to reassess nearer the time I think. Thanks for the info.

ChrissieKeller61 · 12/05/2020 08:49

There’s no reason why you couldn’t take him
Up to the high school yourself for a tour around if they are open

MrsWombat · 12/05/2020 19:01

@HorsesDoovers The government are only "strongly suggesting" that you send your children to school and they are not fining parents who don't. I would clarify the situation with the primary school before you pull them out.

CottonSock · 12/05/2020 19:10

I wouldn't bother, it's such a short time frame really. I bet there will be some kids not returning till Sept.

HorsesDoovers · 12/05/2020 19:14

@MrsWombat OK thank you that's really helpful. I guess the school will be in touch soon, once they've sorted out how they intend to approach things (I really wouldn't want to be trying to navigate my way through it all)

Aveisenim · 12/05/2020 19:31

May be worth asking in home ed.

lazylockdowner · 12/05/2020 19:53

Why would you de register him you don't have to send him into school and you will not get into any trouble or fined for it. Just let his school know he won't be coming on the 1st of June and leave it at that and start him as planned at his secondary when they open.

Schools may not even open on the 1st June yet depends if things get bad over next couple of weeks

Derbygerbil · 12/05/2020 20:01

I’m assuming you mean Year 7 not Year 11?
