Is this a gluten allergy

Hi guys

Really need some advice and insight. I’ve just started weaning my 5month old daughter because she has horrendous reflux. She also has CMPA and eczema. So far all I’ve given her is super smooth puréed carrot and parsnip and porridge. The dietician said I should make up my own. So I blended the oats right down to a powder and made it up with her own formula. Yesterday was the first day and she started to get a rash around her face... no immediately but later in the day. Really raised and almost blistery looking. It settled down a bit by bedtime. She woke up at 10pm and kept kicking her legs in the air and had a really watery poo this morning. Just tried her on it again and the rash appeared on her face like within 30mins and she’s thrown up about 3 times in 2hrs.

Could this be an allergy? I thought it was too early give her porridge but the dietician seemed to think it was ok

I would guess so. You can get gluten free oats. Oats are gluten free anyway but they are in trucks that have had wheat in. So always go for gluten free ones. Best phone your doctor if this is the reaction she is getting you need to get it checked out.

My DD is Coeliac, she was never sick, but her tummy pain and diarrhoea was horrendous. She also got a rash on her legs. It can show in many different ways though.

I think maybe posting under a different topic may get you a better response though.

I am a Coeliac. Firstly gluten intolerance is not an allergy it is an autoimmune condition (yes they are different). Coeliac disease is genetic so if someone in your family has the condition there is a small chance your daughter may have it, that could be a grandma or a cousin etc. Secondly, many Coeliacs cannot tolerate gluten-free oats because it has a protein in it similar to the gluten protein, I cannot eat gluten-free oats as it makes me ill.
I would suggest you call Coeliac UK for further advice and I would say do this before you see the GP so you are armed with the proper facts of the condition.
If you want your daughter to be tested for Coeliac she will have to continue eating gluten as they look for antibodies in the blood.
