So I shared a petition on Facebook about making the Coronavirus mandatory if we ever get one. I’m definitely not anti vaccination and one of those people who believe vaccines cause autism. But I think we should have a say in if we take the vaccine or not as opposed to it being mandatory. So anyway, a family friend commented on it calling me fucking stupid, and another comment calling me crazy etc. I do not appreciate being called stupid or crazy for my OWN opinion. At the end of the day if you don’t agree with someone you either don’t say anything or message them privately. What do you guys think? Is this too far? What’s your opinions. As clearly these days I can’t even do anything or say anything right.

What concerns me is that While vaccines are Voluntary
There is a chance that in the future if you aren’t vaccinated you won’t be eligible for schools or certain jobs etc

It’s already the case for my industry. I am required to have certain jabs I can’t be forced to take them but the governing bodies policy is no jab no job - for me if we do get a corona virus jab I will need to have it if I want to keep working

There is no vaccine yet, it won't be mandatory when there is, that petition is idiotic.

PhilCornwall1 · 10/05/2020 05:37

It's a pointless petition. There isn't a vaccine and to be honest, I don't think there ever will be one.

As far as mandatory is concerned that's impossible. Regardless of what people think, just because the government imposed this lockdown, it doesn't mean they can force you to do anything they want regarding covid-19 from now on, it doesn't work that way.

There will be a percentage of the population who may not be able to have it health reasons, as skewed as that sounds.

Ifailed · 10/05/2020 05:50

OP, I'm familiar with that petition, or a similar one. The wording is a clue, it originates in the US and is aimed at stopping a mandatory vaccination over there.
As others have stated, we don't have mandatory vaccinations in the UK. Though I agree with the idea that if one is discovered, is effective and offered to us all, not having one would be a barrier to many jobs.

Apolloanddaphne · 10/05/2020 06:09

What a stupid petition. If/when a vaccine is made it won't be mandatory in the UK anyway. There is no point petitioning about something that won't happen.

pairofchairs · 10/05/2020 06:25

Thank you for reminding me why I deleted my Facebook account.

Cherryblossomsnow · 10/05/2020 07:04

I have seen this petition and it's a bit silly isn't it's as there is no vaccine yet and no one is saying that if there is a vaccine that it will be mandatory? It's a petition for a hypothetical situation. It's also comes across as anti-vax even though I know that this is not what it is about at all. I think be prepared that if you share it that it will be seen as an anti-vax view point even though I am aware it is not.

Cherryblossomsnow · 10/05/2020 07:10

I was thinking actually that there is zero chance of a mandatory vaccine in the UK as they can even seem to enforce people staying at home.

PrincessButtercuppp · 10/05/2020 07:11

There is very little chance any vaccine will be made mandatory especially an untested new one. Forced medical procedures go against everything we stand for in the U.K as it opens up a minefield....where do you stop? sterilisation to stop genetic diseases spreading too? You get the picture. If and when the vaccine arrives it will be made available to the risk groups and the risk groups only. Vaccinating the entire population would be prohibitively expensive especially with a vaccine of unknown effectiveness

Bluntness100 · 10/05/2020 07:18

Christ, can’t believe someone started a petition about this, when a vaccine hasn’t even been found yet, never mind whether it will be mandatory or not, or even the risks associated with having it v not having it, v the benefit to the population, or the social implications on not having it.

How batshit is that,

Personally I’d just have eye rolled and scrolled on. Probably muttered ffs under my breath.

I don’t think they should have called our your behaviour though as being stupid and crazy, because, well it doesn’t do any good.

AndMyHairWillShineLikeTheSea · 10/05/2020 07:25

The vaccine if/when it's rolled out will not be untested! They're doing testing now!

Bluntness100 · 10/05/2020 07:41

This thread is mind boggling. Who could possibly think a vaccine would be untested.

And I’m sorry op, but can’t you see that understanding the vaccine, the trials, the test results, the societal impacts of making it mandatory v not, the risks associated with it, is critical to be able to have a balanced opinion on whether it should actually be mandatory or not?

PrincessButtercuppp · 10/05/2020 08:05

@AndMyHairWillShineLikeTheSea because it's takes years to produce and test vaccines thoroughly?! The testing will be the roll out to the population obviously. Most vaccines are 12 years in the development due to this.

PrincessButtercuppp · 10/05/2020 08:10

Phase 3 will take ages and will be nigh on impossible with people socially isolating. Although interesting article in Nature about deliberately infecting test subjects with covid to see if the vaccine works. Vaccine is going to be a very very long time coming because it can't be any other way
