Masks

I know the jury is out on the wearing of masks for the public in public/indoor environments.

In the news, there's talk about asymptomatic spread. Also I read that the virus spreads in the usual way via droplets from coughs and sneezes. I also read it can be spread by breath and just my talking. I mean, that's fairly scary. Can colds spread like that.

I know we had issues of PPE for the healthcare professionals. I don't see any harm in fabric/cloth/reusable masks, especially masks with a filter pocket.

I reckon it's only a matter of time before the government will recommend the wearing of cloth masks for the public when in indoor public environments.

(a little of topic - I bought some fabric masks from sewers on etsy for the family and my mother turned her nose up at them. She wants the surgical masks. If you're lucky to find them, there's price gouging going on. I'm slightly upset about that. I meant well and she snubbed me. The masks I bought aren't good enough for her. I will be using them myself).

Exactly. Probably half of all cases are asymptomatic.

well you will be able to buy plenty of hospital grade masks that were stolen from NHS hospitals thsi week, tons of them

A two layered cotton mask with a dried out baby wipe or a cut up vacuum bag is a good barrier for YOU getting C-19. Any type of face covering, ideally a two layered cotton mask is a good barrier to stop you spreading`anything you may have.

If everyone wears a mask then transference is bound to be reduced. I'm in Singapore and we are required to wear masks while outdoors, in shops etc.

I bought 3 bandanas off amazon and some hair elastic bobbly things. Plenty of YouTube vids on how to fold the square with a piece of kitchen roll inside, then tuck ends in and hook round ears with hair bobbles. Super comfy, drop in wash bag as I come in the door (forgot to take kitchen roll out first time, you only do that once) and then pick up clean one next time. MOH uses his motorcycle neck warmers with bit of kitchen roll.

There are a lot of no sew ideas for face coverings. Made from t shirts, socks etc. Most you just need a pair of scissors.

My favourite so far was a handkerchief/bandana and 2 scrunchies.

They are all intended to prevent your spittle landing on someone else. So not medical grade. Not intended for prolonged wear.

Easy to wash at 60°

Find your favourite and make half a dozen.

Remember they are mainly to make everyone feel safer. They are not protective to most people in close contact circumstances.

I have no reason to not agree with this little diagram.
Wearing this type of mask for use in public should not be confused with wearing a medical grade mask in a hospital setting.

Government are now recommending the wearing of masks in places where you can’t socially distance for everyone over the age of two.

CuriousaboutSamphire · 11/05/2020 15:24

Face coverings.

I think they say face coverings. Specifically not medical grade masks.

BoreOfWhabylon · 11/05/2020 16:27

Thanks for the Etsy link - have just placed an order

Hi all I've been told that drying out new wet wipes is a good filter for masks, hope this helps.
