Just received shielding letter?

Has anyone else had this this week? 12 weeks means August 1st! I’m asthmatic but not that severely, or at least I thought not. We live rurally and am desperate to be able to walk in the fields, I never see a soul.

@Aragog when you say a three point system, what do you mean? I have 2 conditions in the vulnerable category - would that be two points?

Underhisi · 09/05/2020 15:34

Ds's was for having a learning disability. We know that is not a shielding condition and that people with a learning disability are allowed out more often and further from home which doesn't tie in with shielding being required.

I’m on montelukast and fostair, so perhaps it’s that? I have a flu jab every year. I don’t work anymore so don’t need the letter for that, and we’ve managed to get Ocado slots once a week or so.

I’m just surprised it’s suddenly come now.

@Underhisi - are they definitely sending shielding letters to those with learning disabilities now? This could also be an explanation for dd's letter. The GP didn't mention it but the receptionist had said it might be a reason.

Aragog · 09/05/2020 18:25

It's just the system I was sent from our local hospital's rheumatology department. So for the rheumatology issues we have three points for a shielded letter. My taking methotrexate puts me at two points. To move to three it's if accompanied by other specific medication or another health condition.

Not sure if all departments are doing similar or all areas??

Underhisi · 09/05/2020 18:42

pinkpip100 my GP is but friends with different GPs haven't got one - ds's was sent a couple of weeks ago. I think for learning disability it seems to be an individual GP thing. I checked and was told it is the only reason he has been put on the list. We are still taking him out for exercise and he is still attending special school as a vulnerable child. He is at more risk from being kept in all the time than he is from catching the virus.

Thanks @underhisi. It's tricky with my dd as she does have underlying health issues as well as learning disability. She would benefit from being out more but has no concept of social distancing, a tendency to run off at the drop of a hat and has her hands in her mouth most of the time! She would be very likely to pick something up - so we haven't been out much - just the occasional very short walk. Shielding feels like a whole different ballgame though.

Thanks, Aragog*. I've no idea what mine are doing. And I see specialists at two different trusts!

I just received one for my daughter, not even her name just says 'BABY' surname.. she is one next week!
No idea why as she has no underlying conditions at all. Very odd!
It says to shield until 30th June.
