If the 2m social distance is effective .... why are people still catching Covid - 19?

It’s about mitigation, reduction & probability. Can’t get R figures to zero, & can’t leave the economy to crash for a year so mitigating by doing everything reasonable to reduce the risk is the way forward. 2m is definitely not a fail safe, scientific experiments have shown coughs & sneezes may travel up to 6m, but that would be the exception & could not work practically.
2m reduces the risk substantially as does wearing gloves & ( masks stop you spreading it so if we all wear them probability is reduced again), only going out when you really to ( which also saves petrol! ), washing hands regularly & wiping down or self quarantining shopping etc all helps.

Watch those parcel deliveries- we just pop everything in the car for 7 days - needs a bit of pre planning but seems to be working. Some news suggests that certain Large delivery firms are hothouses for the virus.....be cautious who you get deliveries from!

It's not about removing all risk it's about reducing it.

For example: "Seat belts save lives".
Some of those involved in a car crash will still be injured or die despite wearing a seat belt....
So are seat belts pointless?

There is nothing magic about 2m, 1m 1.5m, 6ft or even 4m.
No guarantees and time matters too.
So some people get het up by a cyclist passing 1.5m away (it's less than 2m!!!) But this is probably lower risk than being 2.5m away from someone else for 10 minutes. And both are low risk.
Guidance has to be a balance between reducing risk against what is pragmatic and achievable.

The 2m distance isn't pointless. It reinforces the message about not coming into contact with people from outside the home. So no kiss on the cheek, no handshake. It discourages standing about in groups chatting.
