Children and COVID19

godhelpusall · 08/05/2020 18:31

I'm interested in experiences of children with C19. My kids have both had it and it has lasted weeks and (particularly for DD) has been really awful. I keep seeing articles etc about how children don't get it badly but the cynical part of me wonders whether this supports a back to work agenda. I'd be interested to find out any experiences of children having it- it can't only be mine who have been ill for 6 weeks?

just a bruise like rash

UtterlyPerfectCartoonGiraffe · 09/05/2020 13:42

@godhelpusall thank you Flowers and so sorry for your dd too. It just feels endless doesn’t it! I completely agree with you too that lots of people seem really blasé and think it just doesn’t affect kids. When it does it can be horrible for them Sad

I’m going to try the gp again on Monday. I’m trying not to overreact about the covid/Kawasaki link but now his lymph gland is up I’m slightly on edge!

@SabrinaTheTeenageBitch The rash/cold sore outbreaks are so strange aren’t they. Like you said for your dd, it looked like chicken pox but vanished. So strange. Their immune systems must have taken a big hit Sad Is your dd feeling better now?

Kitcat122 · 09/05/2020 13:45

My husband got it first. He works abroad so through Heathrow non stop. He was ill for 10 days fluey and painful chest (we didn't think cv). Next DS 14 very ill. High fever for 2 weeks non stop cough, d&v. Very breathless, terrible ears and tinnitus. Better after 3 weeks but said was short of breath at school for about 8 weeks. I got it too still breathless but DD10 and DS 8 no symptoms. Not tested but can't imagine what else would make a very fit, exercise crazy family so ill and breathless for so long.

Stuckforthefourthtime · 09/05/2020 13:56

Neighbours got it - wife ill first, thought it was a flu but isolated in case, then husband became very ill and in hospital for over a week and confirmed to have coronavirus (he's late 40s, I'd guess and apparently in good health, though a very big bloke). Their two kids age 6 and 8 never showed any symptoms at all.

Keepdistance · 09/05/2020 17:17

Im thinking it causes swollen glands.
So affecting earsvand stomachs too. Though ace2 receptors in gatrointestinal tract too.
For ear issues. Have you tried
Yawning with bottom jaw forward to pop your ears.
Or olbas oil on tissue to unblock sinuses.
Anyone still suffering with symptoms have you tried increasing vit d and getting some sun?

Another coronavirus apparently causes croup which makes a lot of sene as that really sets my dc off with coughing.

Kitcat122 · 09/05/2020 17:50

@keepdistance yes my doctor prescribed 20mins in the sun arms out and 3000iu vit D for 2 months.

FjorGynAndHotWater · 15/05/2020 10:35

@godhelpusall @sleepwhenidie @Keepdistance

How are your DC doing, I hope you have seen some improvements? I thought my DD was seeming a bit brighter but yesterday she was really dizzy, and complaining of rib pain at bedtime which is a new thing Confused she's still sleeping now so will see how she is when she wakes up. Today is day 52.

We have an appointment for the paed clinic at hospital on 27th May although only by phone so not sure how helpful that will be... time to start making notes already so I don't forget anything!

My 8 year old daughter was very ill a few weeks back. Developed a very high temperature, very weak and tired. Loss of appetite. She stayed in bed for a number of days as was too unwell to do anything else. This is the worst she has ever been with any illness she has had. As a keyworker (I work for the NHS) she had been in school the week before on the Monday. That same day got a text from school to say that they had to close for a week to undertake a deep clean as someone associated with the school had tested positive for coronavirus. It was the Tuesday the following week she became ill. She had also been ill a couple of weeks prior with a high temp and a headache but this literally lasted one day and was back to normal the day after.

My 3 year old son did not get ill. I had a cough anyways (since October) but my cough changed in that it became quite a dry cough but other than that I was fine. Change in cough lasted about 1 week.

The testing availability from my trust nor the expanded test capacity in the community for keyworkers had not been set up at the time of her illness to be able to test her or us. I'm not sure if this was corona or not, but certainly at the time and how ill she was, I was 100% sure it was. Without testing we just don't know. Hopefully soon an antibody test may be able to tell us more, but even then, if it shows she had corona previously it's no proof that this illness when she was very ill was corona as she may have had it before but had been asymptomatic.

sleepwhenidie · 15/05/2020 13:18

@FjorGynAndHotWater thanks for asking. I thought we were through it too, from Sunday onward she was so much brighter and more herself, playing and laughing. Then on Tuesday evening she said she felt dizzy and has been gradually worse since then Sad. Still coughing, and temp raised again (37.6).

FjorGynAndHotWater · 15/05/2020 15:24

@sleepwhenidie your poor DD, and you too, it's so shit when we're meant to be able to fix things for them but we just can't 😢.

Encouragingly my DD is feeling a bit better again today, the rib pain disappeared overnight and she's not quite as woebegone as she was yesterday. Think she slept a bit better. Am giving her piriton every night (on Drs advice) as she struggles to get to sleep. No doubt exacerbated by the 12 hours a day of screen time she is getting... Blush

But it does feel like we are taking tiny tiny steps forward and when she has a bad patch each time it's a bit less bad IYKWIM. Thinking I might get some turmeric supplements for her to go with the vit D, mtivitamin, fish oil and kefir I am pouring into her...

sleepwhenidie · 15/05/2020 15:58

Same here, turmeric, probiotics, vit c&d and iron supplement (floradix)!

thewheelsonthebus23 · 15/05/2020 16:08

We think we all had it about 8 weeks ago and my 18 month old had a horrendous cough. He coughed so hard one night he burst a blood vessel in his eye.
He had a slight temp and was off his food, also very sleepy. An itchy, hive like rash developed a couple of weeks later which I’ve seen on social media many other people mention as a symptom or a later symptom of a post viral effect.

sleepwhenidie · 15/05/2020 20:55

@FjorGynAndHotWater did you see this article? www.theguardian.com/world/2020/may/15/weird-hell-professor-advent-calendar-covid-19-symptoms-paul-garner?CMP=Share_iOSApp_Other

I’ve updated the doctor by email today but don’t anticipate them doing anything.

Clavinova · 15/05/2020 21:08

The person I caught it off is a teacher and she caught it off some children who had been on a school ski trip to Italy.

The teacher is more likely to have caught it from a teacher colleague who also went on the ski trip.

Turtlepants · 15/05/2020 21:15

We all (me, DH, DS(5) and DD(2) all had symptoms but DH and DS had the very clear-cut Coronavirus symptoms of a cough and a temp, whereas mine and DD’s were more vague. We had this back in March.

DD had had one of those lingering toddler coughs with zero other symptoms for a few weeks before we all caught it, which I think was just left over from a cold. Then mid-March I got a thick feeling in my throat, congestion, a swollen armpit gland and I had a mild temp - I initially assumed a cold, but then I got the constant cough. We began self-isolating. About 4 days later, DH got the temp and cough, but overall be was fine with paracetamol and a couple of mornings in bed. DD’s cough got much worse at this point but she had no temp or other scary symptoms.

About 5 days after DH got ill, DS developed a constant cough, a sharp stomach ache which lasted a couple of hours (no idea if that’s connected), then a high temp. The temp lasted 4 days, but was controlled well with paracetamol. He then coughed more or less constantly day and night for another week which was awful for him, and we were all exhausted from lack of sleep.

DD and DS are totally fine now, thankfully. DH (he’s 34) had covid toe about 6 weeks after his cough, and I occasionally get a silly urge to cough now but this may be unconnected, I do have allergies and post-nasal drip and have always been quite prone to colds.

Porcupineinwaiting · 15/05/2020 21:26

Why do you say that @Clavinova? Presumably the children in questions were teenagers. There's no medical evidence to suggest teenagers get and spread coronavirus any differently to adults.

Clavinova · 15/05/2020 21:30

Why do you say that @Clavinova?

More likely to be in close contact in the staff room - sitting next to each other, sharing milk, kettle, biscuit tin...
