How likely are you to lose your job due to the impending economic calamity?

The economy is screwed and so are we. I'm currently furloughed but due to return in a couple of weeks (they are rotating team members). My job involves a lot of travel so whilst it is possible to do it from home, it's not really the same level of quality and they could probably have more work done with less people once the travel element is removed (it wouldn't be classed as essential business travel). Can't see me doing any work related travel this year at least.

The company I work for is not first in line to go bust (like retail, travel etc) but does offer services to some of those industries so if major clients go bust then it will certainly affect income.

I'd say I'm 50:50 that I'll be made redundant, usually i'd just pick up contract work in that scenario but I can see there being lots of people in the same boat and very few contracts.

Trying to save as much money as possible now to add to meagre savings. Husband doesn't work but rents out a property which would tide us over, so long as our tenants continued to be able to pay rent.

I received a letter this week to say we are furloughed until end of June.

I work at an independent school, they won't go back until September if at all. So not looking good for me.

amber763 · 08/05/2020 18:56

I'm furloughed at the moment but there's a fair chance as I work in travel. Trying hard to save and hope for the best and take each day as it comes.

ApocalypseNowt · 08/05/2020 18:56

Feel very lucky that my job is secure. I work as a debt advisor so it'll be boom time in our industry Sad

UnmightyBoosh · 08/05/2020 18:57

@Toomboom they can’t just tell you that you’re furloughed - you have to consent to it.

Oldsu · 08/05/2020 19:02

Think my DH will be ok, he runs two charity shops, his charity is going to need the money raised and people are already sorting stuff out to take to charity shops, also both his shops are on a long lease, if not he has a state and private pension to fall back on , as for me not sure I am due to get my own state pension next March, but I had decided to defer it and carry on working, I am really hoping I can do that as I don't think my own private pension will be worth much at the moment

averythinline · 08/05/2020 19:06

We're not sure currently nightmare dh job went end of feb all interviews he arranged on March cancelled.., no one recruiting... mixed industry impact in last recession hope something works out before our mortgage break ends ....

PuppyMonkey · 08/05/2020 19:07

I started a new p/t job at the end of January - hadn’t even done my 3 month probation before I was furloughed. Not sure if I’ll have a job to go back to as the company’s lost all its clients and I don’t think some of those clients will survive the lockdown.

I’ll probably have to try going back to freelance writing for local newspaper - but I’m pretty sure they’re fucked tbh.

Mightymurphy · 08/05/2020 19:10

Our entire office is furloghed. I think there will be redundancies. My only hope for being kept on is length of service at 12 years and that I cover when others roles when they are off.

It’s a terrible situation however, it could be that our whole branch is closed and I would still be made redundant.

Honeyroar · 08/05/2020 19:21

I’m currently furloughed until the end of June but my company has given notice of redundancy to us all too. They are cutting 1/3 of the workforce, but haven’t said who yet. They are such a greedy, toxic company to work for I’m at the point of hoping I get redundancy. We’d scrimp by for a few months.

Just wanted to share this with you. Short term not looking good but if you’re in a position to weather the short term storm, the job market should pick up later in the year.

CurlyEndive · 08/05/2020 19:24

DH works for an insurance company, I think his job is reasonably safe. I work for a university. As others have said up thread, the sector is in trouble and some universities are likely to close. I should be ok in the short term though.

TheDrsDocMartens · 08/05/2020 20:04

I’m freelance, in theory our industry has enough work and mainly public services but at the moment there’s not a lot and it goes to experienced people which I’m not!

AuditAngel · 08/05/2020 20:55

I’m reasonably confident about my job, fairly niche role and I hav3 a lot of transferable skills. But DH owns a small bar. Currentlyfurloughed, no idea if they’ll survive

GallusAlice79 · 08/05/2020 20:58

Public sector, key area. Job as safe as any other time.

Bertie30 · 08/05/2020 21:14

Our business will be looking at a £2m loss of income on current T/O of £20m. That could improve or become worse. The problem is that only £5m of that was profit before tax. That will now be down to £3m and it is owned by a private equity company who bought it For a lot of money last year based on profit increasing from £5m to £8m over the next 5 years. I can only see one end result and that is cost reductions. Based on staff costs of £5m a year I can only see one end result and that is between 20-30% of staff losing their jobs in the next 6 months.

CeeCeeEnnEss · 09/05/2020 08:24

Lost mine already!

ifonly4 · 09/05/2020 08:35

DH's job is secure. I have one job that's secure.

The other has been in dodgy ground for a while - it's remained open and running at a severe loss now. Staff numbers are minimal, but rumour has it they'll scale staff back to a bear minimum very soon. Staff going in are wondering if they'll be the ones to keep their jobs over those shielding as we think numbers will be cut before they come back. I don't think this will be enough to save us though.

DaisylovesDonald · 09/05/2020 08:50

My job is secure but I’m only a lunchtime supervisor in a school so not exactly bringing home the big bucks!
Dh is senior management in a restaurant company currently completely closed. Most of them are furloughed, he is still working but has been reduced to 80% pay and likely to decrease further the longer they remain shut. IF they can weather this and reopen safely in the next 3 months or so then his job is reasonably secure, but if they don’t reopen for longer then the company probably won’t survive. Dh is calm and optimistic, I am living in a state of dread as it’s hard to see when these things will be opening up right now. Plus if he does lose his job it’s not exactly going to be easy to find something else.....

graisse · 09/05/2020 09:24

Already happened to me. Desperately praying DH doesn't lose his job or we will lose everything we have. Absolutely petrified

HerbieHerr · 09/05/2020 09:56

I work in microbiology 🤷🏼‍♀️
I’m hoping everyone realises the importance of work in this field is now and will fund it properly but highly doubt things will change.

TheLovleyChebbyMcGee · 09/05/2020 12:14

@HerbieHerr Same, and fully agree!!

BeyondMyWits · 09/05/2020 12:25

I work in a pharmacy. So unless the death toll becomes seriously grim...

DH is civil service and his role is safe.

DD19 is in telecoms fault resolution - so generally safe

DD17 is in her A level exam year and in despair of ever getting a job.

BirdieFriendReturns · 09/05/2020 12:51

Military officer
Civil servant supporting military ops and training.

Think we’ll be okay.

LilacTree1 · 09/05/2020 12:57

BlackLamb - “ particularly as we didn't receive the requested government bailout.”

Has this been confirmed? I didn’t think the government had actually refused it yet?

EnlightenedOwl · 09/05/2020 13:01

Support staff solicitors it's a certainty. Downturn in work coming in many staff furloughed. I am wfh atm but anticipating being offered cut in hours with associated pay cut. There will be a redundancy consultation following
