Where we live (a London borough) I’ve seen at least 2 people spotting on the pavement each time i go out PLUS on my walk see usually 2-3 snotty piles of saliva on the pavement
It’s disgusting and surely very unhygienic atm-big is it actually illegal to spit or just completely wrong

My understanding is that it's only illegal if you deliberately spit at someone with intent. Then it's assault.

HavelockVetinari · 07/05/2020 19:36

I wish it bloody was, it's disgusting, coronavirus or no coronavirus Angry

I hate the runners and cyclists who claim they "need" to spit - no you fucking don't, I do long distances of both and I've never spat on the ground, never! If I do need to clear my mouth I use a tissue!

Between that and the amount of dog poo everywhere I’m constantly dodging treading in something nasty

On London buses in the 1940s and 50s there were notices 'Do not spit'. I remember,as a child, a lot of old men would spit in the street.

OP- I must live in the same borough as you!!! Its vile and I always wonder about the risk of TB also! I'd love to see signs in my area- in the various languages, but the ones that do it don't see an issue. Better still, fines. Maybe its a cultural thing and not seen as dirty by some people?

Little scrotes hanging out in our local cycle path smoking dope and drinking had covered the path from one side to the other in spit and seemed to be purposefully doing in infront of passersby personally id taze them in the throat but that may be alittle extreme.

RandomMess · 07/05/2020 20:08

It is assault and it's historically because of spreading TB.

Newcatmum · 07/05/2020 20:13

It makes me feel sick at the best of times never mind now. I was sitting in my garden the other day and the guy next door was in his garden after his cycle. He then left his garden and blew his nose (held in a nostril and blew out the other) directly on to the path outside our gardens and then poured water over it AngryEnvy.

Yes our borough has high tb rates my dc all had the bag as newborns due to that
I just wish the pavements weren’t covered in it 🤢

Spitting is a very cultural thing: nu uncle in law from south east Asia was a big splitter, it used to make me gag. These are countries which still have a large TB rate. This is not coincidental.

Yes, absolutely spitting should be regarded as a public health offence and when aimed at another person, then assault.
