Had a strange call

Had a call around 1700 from the local council volunteers group to see how I was as I'm on their list of shielded people apparently. Did I need help with shopping or prescriptions, or just a weekly check in?

I was a bit confused about this as apparently I should've had a letter? I got a text a few weeks ago that I 'might' be on the vulnerable list and I would be hearing from my gp in due course. Haven't heard a thing.

I am type 2 and awaiting an operation for mysterious bladder growths and on my kidney, and am post chemo from breast cancer. As far as I understand though, none of these conditions come under the shielding umbrella?

I've been going to work as normal, picking up my own prescriptions etc and am now a bit worried. Had a test on Sunday as DH was experiencing a painful chest, cough and sore throat and I've had huge fatigue and really bad stomach pains. Still waiting for results on that. Due back to work on earlies on Friday.

Would the surgery know anything about the vulnerability thing if I give them a call tomorrow?

My Mum had these calls but is absolutely on the shielded list. You seem to have gone through/going through a lot. Maybe check with your GP tomorrow Flowers

NervousInYorkshire · 05/05/2020 23:09

Yep, definitely give them a call.
I'm a type 2 with a long history of horribly high hba1c results, and asthma (but not severe).

Apparently my surgery sent my shielding letter on 17 April, but never received it.

I had a missed call from the national shielding service thing, spoke to my surgery the next day asking whether it was legit, then found out I should have been shielding for weeks...

JoanieCash · 05/05/2020 23:11

The ‘post chemo from breast cancer’ maybe the reason for shielding. Will depend on when you finished it.

Pipandmum · 05/05/2020 23:13

Your husband has symptoms and you've had some too and had a test and you are still going to work? You should be in isolation regardless of any letter.

Changeyname40 · 05/05/2020 23:15

I had the call, the list has been 'gone through' again and anyone who maybe could be on it seems to have been. It is not compulsory. I trawled the online advice and it said to call your GP to discuss your plan to keep yourself safe if you don't want to shield.

BlueyDragon · 05/05/2020 23:24

I had the same call - got the vulnerable letter in the second wave as I tick the asthma and the cancer boxes. My GP phoned me two days later to discuss, as my cancer has officially been fucked off and asthma hasn’t been a major problem for years, and she and I agreed I wasn’t vulnerable. But I hadn’t been taken off this lady’s list.

Your surgery absolutely would know so call them tomorrow. But the various bits of the system probably won’t talk to each other so you may be on someone’s list for a while.

Arewehere · 05/05/2020 23:30

Surely you should be on the list?

ConnieDoodle · 05/05/2020 23:33

My parents are on the shielding list. They get a weekly call from the council, weekly food boxes from the council too. And Today the bin men came up their drive, into their back garden and took the bin to empty then put it back in the garden!

Babysharkdoodoodood · 05/05/2020 23:47

@Pipandmum The symptoms were last week and by the time I go to work on Friday then 7 days will have passed. I just took some a/l to cover me for a few extra days. We're both feeling better now, but felt like death over the weekend. Could've been any other virus though, so I booked the test as more of an insurance thing.

But the guidance is to self isolate for 14 days I thought? Op have you gone out in the last 7 days whilst your husband had had symptoms?

makingmiracles · 06/05/2020 00:15

Yep 14 days if you live with other people and one of you has had symptoms, it said that in the government leaflet that was sent out with Boris letter

married15 · 06/05/2020 00:24

And if you felt like death at the weekend then surely that’s showing symptoms? And Friday is too early to return to work?

EveryFlightBeginsWithAFall · 06/05/2020 00:28

My mum had a call 2 weeks ago. It was due to her having treatment for breast cancer that ended last year

RUSU92 · 06/05/2020 00:29

It’s 7 days for him, 14 for you. Stay away for another week for everyone else’s sake.

RUSU92 · 06/05/2020 00:31

Here you go OP

Had a strange call
Babysharkdoodoodood · 06/05/2020 00:32

Except we both got sick at the same time so that's just 7 days?

OP posts:
thecranford · 06/05/2020 00:38

You've have fatigue and stomach pains - not Covid symptoms. Someone you live with HAS had Covid symptoms so you need to isolate for 14 days.

thecranford · 06/05/2020 00:39

I should have been clearer - you have not had the two stipulated Covid symptoms- cough and/or fever.

LemonTT · 06/05/2020 00:40

If you are getting tested it’s because you think you have the virus. If that’s the case then isolate until you get a negative. It’s that simple.

Phone your surgery to find out if you should be shielding. If you had texts about it why would you not do that anyway?

chunkycoke · 06/05/2020 00:44

You need to isolate for 14 days. But yes definitely give them a call

Babysharkdoodoodood · 07/05/2020 10:19

Well I've had the shielding text now so that's it. I'll have to get work to give me a laptop to wfh. They seem to think I can just sit in a corner away from everyone and that'll be ok (ffs).
