Will schools go back in June and will we get summer holidays?

Just wondering really, read that schools might be going back June/July if that's the case does that mean no 6 week holidays this year because we effectively had it already?

DS is in reception so would be moving up to year 1 surely there would be no point in sending them to school for a few weeks to then have another 6 week break?

If there is a move to open schools in June, it will, hopefully, not be all children.

We will be getting holidays although I expect some schools will still provide some form of childcare for key workers. Many schools are working very hard - I am teaching t lessons a day over the Internet. You can’t ask me to do that, and the planning and the marking and the assessment and reports and then expect me to work over the summer.,

PrivateD00r · 05/05/2020 22:20

DBML, I work for the NHS, was meant to be on leave this week but it was cancelled on Sunday due to sickness. Plus, lets me honest, there won't be any holidays this summer.

The summer holidays will go ahead and rightly so. But not for the reasons you stated.

Twigletmama · 05/05/2020 22:23

@DBML

But it is extremely unlikely that anyone will be going on holiday or visiting anyone in the summer. Social distancing will still be in place.

NHS workers have had all of their leave cancelled. These are exceptional circumstances. I really can't see any reason why shifting the summer holidays, with a short break at the end of August, would be such an unreasonable thing to do.

DBML · 05/05/2020 22:30

And yet neither of you know that. There is twelve weeks to go and a lot can change in that time.

@PrivateD00r
I assume when you say you had leave cancelled, you’ll be allowed that time back at some point?

@Twigletmama

Well go for it and enjoy “seeing no reason”... but it isn’t going to happen.

Pomegranatepompom · 05/05/2020 22:33

I'm losing hope for holidays this year.

If schools don't open until September, we need more inout from our school. I think I'll raise this next week depending on what Boris says.
I appreciate some schools are providing feedback/interaction/marking, but we just get a weekly sheet emailed.

PrivateD00r · 05/05/2020 22:42

I assume so DBML, hopefully things will settle at some point and we will be able to all get our leave. Obviously we are all legally entitled to, what, 25 days or whatever it is.

Nothing wrong with remaining hopeful I guess. We have told the kids our holiday won't be happening though as no point in them having yet another disappointment if we let them prepare for going. I don't think I will be allowed my annual leave to go anyway! If I do, I will probably have to get DH to change his to a different 2 weeks to cover childcare anyway.

Anyway, as I said I don't see this as a justifiable reason to not change the holidays. However lack of ppe and lack of being ready to set up safely is a good reason. No way are schools going to be able to open without several weeks notice to prepare. It is imperative that they remain closed until a safe system is implemented for staff and that will take time.

whattodo2019 · 05/05/2020 22:48

It's likely that the schools will return after half term , however, not all children will return at once. I wouldn't be surprised if EYFS don't return at all until September.

OnTheMoors · 05/05/2020 23:03

Will there be any catch up for pp+ (previously looked after) with SEN (mainstream no EHCP) ?

cantkeepawayforever · 05/05/2020 23:04

Realistically, I think it is more sensible to get some children in in June, watch the infection and death rate climb, then have the 6 weeks to re-lock down without further impact on children's education at least, than to expect children in school over the summer with no break.

caringcarer · 05/05/2020 23:06

Williams has already stated that whatever happens kids will still get summer break as normal.

cantkeepawayforever · 05/05/2020 23:07

OntheMoors,

I think it will depend. In schools where a majority of childrten have kept up some learning and there is therefore some capacity for targeted extra catch-up - probably yes.

in schools where the vast majority have dropped out of any form of educational activity throughout lockdown and so the need for catch up for all is overwhelmiog - probably not UNLESS there is a huge national (and nationally funded, and supported even though those coming in will run a risk of infection in non socially distanced schools) programme.

pfrench · 05/05/2020 23:16

worryingly a teacher bottom page 1

It's not worrying. You should be worried if stuff isn't retaught. I'm at a primary school where around 20 children out of 120 in one key stage (as an example) are actually accessing work. We can't just breeze on as if they've all had access to it, and actually been able to embed the knowledge.

OnTheMoors · 05/05/2020 23:19

pfrench are theses statistics available for all schools?

EachDubh · 05/05/2020 23:27

Each svhool should have an idea of online engagement. My svhool is around 50% but my srction is 80+%.
What has been covered will need to be revisited/checked to ensure understanding, that doesn't mean redoing the same things and differentiation will allow for children to continue to progress.

manicinsomniac · 06/05/2020 01:10

I think there will be some form of return for some children pre Sept. No idea what, when or who.

I think nearly all schools will have summer holidays. A small number of private schools have, I believe, moved their summer holidays from July/Aug to April/May and will do the summer term in the summer holidays. But I only know of 2 schools doing that. I doubt it's widespread.

I can imagine there may be provision for key worker childcare over summer.

gonzales27 · 06/05/2020 09:02

@letseatgrandma I just want people to realise that it's more complicated and there is a huge range of homeschooling going on, with the most vulnerable children the worst effected. I'm just sick of those who are coping fine and homeschooling wonderfully bragging about it and want them to recognise the range out there.

Not sure what the solution is though as I don't want to put more pressure on teachers (I have an even greater respect for them now !). Realistically though, I don't think I'll be able to take a full week of holiday anytime this summer so the chances of us having a proper holiday as a family are slim.

This. DS is year 1 and was writing pages of stuff at school. We are doing daily lessons with him (Oak Academy and Bitesize and topics set by the school) and are horrified at how much he's forgotten and how little he'll write..He will be badly behind the standards expected when he goes back.
This is really going to affect every child and yes we should definitely be worried.

AllesAusLiebe · 06/05/2020 18:13

Teachers may be going away during the holidays, possibly on vacation, possibly to family.

Does your argument apply to NHS staff, police and other keyworkers who have also had annual leave cancelled?

The country would be in an even bigger mess if other professions took the same stance.

Bromeliads · 06/05/2020 18:30

But haven't most other key workers had their annual leave cancelled during lockdown primarily? (As have many teachers). There's a difference between that and having your leave cancelled in August when lockdown is over and you have holidays booked that you potentially could go on.

I'm a teacher and I don't mind the fact I've been working during the holidays because I can't do anything else. However, I'm guessing that if it were deemed alright for schools to be open in August, I would also be able to go on my cottage holiday in rural Shropshire. They wouldn't refund my money because I could go, so I would lose over a thousand pounds.

Headbangersandmash · 06/05/2020 18:39

Government have said definitely no school over the summer holidays. They'd have to pay extra to teachers, TAs, cleaners etc

I don't see the last 6 weeks as holiday at all. My kids haven't seen their friends and bar their Easter break, had homework to complete

Annual leave postponed not cancelled indefinitely. When would you imagine school staff would take the 6 weeks elsewhere in the academic year?

Oh and don’t forget the Easter holidays just gone we’re ‘cancelled’ for many school staff, so please don’t ignore/forget the ‘stance’ school staff have already taken. Some may get TOIL for that, some may not.

poppy1973 · 06/05/2020 19:27

Looks like there will be a mention about schools on Sunday.

BooseysMom · 06/05/2020 20:23

I wonder whether the early years will go back before Sept. I understand why they would stay off as in our school it would be impossible to keep 2m apart. But i'd be worried about DS starting a whole new year and teacher and classroom. He's lost so much of what he learned at school and that's with us home schooling every day. He just isn't thriving the same way as he did at school

Bluntness100 · 06/05/2020 20:26

Op yes and yes, likely back in June and summer holidays happening.

And don’t let the responses put you off, plenty of kids are doing fuck all during this, some an hour or so a day, and their parents have treated it like a holiday.

Plenty of teachers also have little to do.
