Self-Employed HMRC update

HMRC has added a few updates for the self employed grant scheme.

www.gov.uk/guidance/claim-a-grant-through-the-coronavirus-covid-19-self-employment-income-support-scheme

While HMRC will be contacting eligible claimants directly over the next couple of weeks with more specific details you can now see if you're eligible to claim and what date you'll be able to lodge your claim by using their on-line tool (about half way down their web page).

You'll need your UTR and NI number to do this and it will also give you the opportunity to set up your Gateway account if you don't already have one and to update your contact details. It's a good idea to set this up now as the website is likely to get very busy when it goes live on 13th May.

You can find both your UTR and NI number on your tax return. If you're setting up your Gateway at the same time you'll need to provide email/mobile details and you'll need to set up additional security measures to identify you using either security questions or drivers license details or your passport. The system can time out so it's a good idea to have all the details to hand.

Lots of momentum today (a couple of these might have subscription pop-ups but the stories are roughly the same in each)......

Previous reports said that at least 40 Conservative MPs were urging Sunak to extend SEISS.

Other papers are saying the furlough announcement (though not necessarily any decision on the self-employed) should be today. I think last time the furlough changes were announced during the day, not during the Daily briefing.

Its so far costing less than 1/4 of replacing Trident

so cancelling Trident would pay for it several times over

Classiccar · 29/05/2020 14:14

Martin Lewis on Twitter at 1255 lunchtime today strongly suggests we watch the Chancellor later

Self-Employed HMRC update
ListeningQuietly · 29/05/2020 15:00

At least watching Sunak does not make me want to punch the telly.

I drove past his Mum's old shop this morning Grin

Xenia · 29/05/2020 15:30

The one thing of which I can usually be sure is there will be nothing for me (sole trader, £50k + before tax profits last year), that the NHS will never be there when I need it and I will face big tax rises next year to ensure those who have had free money are funded. From those who give most is more taken. Let us hope there is some massive reward in heaven being stored up........

bookgirl1982 · 29/05/2020 17:14

Just announced, a further three months at 70% applied for in August

IsabelleSE19 · 29/05/2020 17:18

Thanks bookgirl - switched on too late and missed the announcement. That's great news - I'll still try and look for work but it's good to know there's more support coming just in case.

PilatesPeach · 29/05/2020 17:21

Yes good news although furlough up to 8 months and 6 of those at 80% and SE 6 months, 3 at 80% and 3 at 70% if I understood it correctly.

Branbleberries · 29/05/2020 17:22

good news. I hope the criteria haven't changed for the worse though - that rumoured £30K limit etc. I hope it includes some of those who were denied the first time.

JokingAsideNow · 29/05/2020 17:22

Oh for heavens sake Xenia. Please try to check your privilege from time to time. You are hardly going to be living off bread and dripping are you?

bookgirl1982 · 29/05/2020 17:23

Not quite @PilatesPeach as the employee will get 80% throughout furlough, but the employer will pay 10% in September and 20% in October.

PilatesPeach · 29/05/2020 17:25

ah right but furlough scheme 8 months pay potentially and SE only 6 months 3 at 80% and 3 at 70% so not 8 months for us?

Branbleberries · 29/05/2020 17:40

Martin Lewis saying that there is no change to eligibility either way.

IntermittentParps · 29/05/2020 18:11

I will face big tax rises next year to ensure those who have had free money are funded

I'll be paying hefty taxes on my 'free money'. And spending the rest of it on keeping the economy going, as will we all.

Jellykat · 29/05/2020 18:17

This extension is such a relief!

I cant see my sector moving forward for a very long time, especially as im in Wales, and its baby steps here..

We do have a bit another bit of a positive.. yes we're only covered for 6 months as opposed to the furloughed 8, but we are allowed to do bits of work if it's available, not so if you're furloughed.

pollysproggle · 29/05/2020 18:31

Great news! Will we have to apply again do you think as we did before?

Wait for a text etc?

IntermittentParps · 29/05/2020 18:34

I would think they'll have the records of who was eligible last time and will just invite everyone to apply again. It's not like anyone's circumstances can have changed seeing as it's all based on past income.

ListeningQuietly · 29/05/2020 18:41

Xenia
At least you sold your island before the market for using it as a TV backdrop dried up.

ListeningQuietly · 29/05/2020 18:43

Not exactly self employment but Bounceback Loans

I applied for one for a Ltd Co client on Tuesday.
It hit the bank today.
Impressed with Santander
and Sunak.

Overthegardenfence · 29/05/2020 21:22

Such a relief ! I work as a dog walker all my customers are working from home and although I’ve asked them they don’t need me until they have to go back in to work.

Snorkelface · 29/05/2020 21:50

Great result! To think that on March 20 the government announced the very generous furlough scheme and offered the self-employed next to nothing, basically just UC and tax deferral and genuinely seemed to think that was enough.

I doubt there is any chance of us getting anything else from SEISS whatsoever after August - it's taken a huge amount of pressure to get Sunak to extend it at all. So do remember the other options still there, including UC (useless to many), July tax deferral, Bounce Back Loans Business Interruption Loans, VAT deferral, mortgage holidays etc. A lot of these are debt based, unlike SEISS, but are still very useful, if not essential, for those who didn't qualify for SEISS or who received very little. Martin Lewis consistently has the best all round info on all the options available.

Also someone mentioned that you can't work if you've been furloughed. This has never been the case. If your contract with your employer allows you can take on as much paid work elsewhere as you like while furloughed, so effectively receive two incomes. The government are actively encouraging it with Pick For Britain for instance. This is what made Sunak's comment about how he thought about the self-employed scheme differently, because we might be taking the grant and still earning some money, so ridiculous.

The criteria remains the same, your business has to be 'adversely affected' by coronavirus to qualify for SEISS. Only you know it has been, in any way, but you don't have to have zero income or no work whatsoever. You can still be looking for and taking on work and getting paid and still claim the grant.

snorkel
its interesting
Javid refused to stay as Chancellor because Johnson insisted on Cummings goons being in the Treasury
it would appear that Sunak has run rings round them
(his Mum who I remember in her shop must be proud )

The way its set up, Sunak will get about 1/3 of the £100 bn back within the next year
JAMMY
a far better investment than spaffing £200 bn on Trident

Stroud primary school teachers my gym buddies are very proud
