If you are covering your face, what are you using?

Guidance in Scotland to now consider using face coverings in certain places. We are not planning on going out any time soon but when things start to relax I would like to wear a face covering on public transport etc.

There are lots of people in surgical style masks but I think I would fiddle too much therefore defeating the purpose and also they are single use so would have to buy loads. Same with dust masks.

Considering a neck gaiter like cyclists wear - better than nothing, comfortable, washable and can pull up from the back so no face touching?

What is everyone else using or thinking about using?

I have bought a few washable face masks from here, they come with a carbon filter. According to the advice I have read online, you can wash them one a week (as long as they aren't soiled), and you can sterilize them daily by putting them into the oven for 20 mins.

I have 2 handmade washable fabric masks from Ebay, a couple of pounds each. Nice flower printed material. They're comfortable to wear and one has a pocket for filtersz if you want to use filters. Again, you can buy a pack of filters quite cheaply on ebay. I don't wear them much atm but they're handy to have.

We bought ski masks as they can be washed and have filters. At the moment they are still in their packaging so if we never use them we can donate them to a charity shop. They fit at the back with Velcro and are worn for exercise so will hopefully fit well and won't need to be touched once on.

If we want to order on Amazon or Etsy, do you know is there a choice for EU made or UK made ?

sleepismysuperpower1 · 04/05/2020 10:47

@petalseaside you can choose the shop location on Etsy, and if they are handmade then you can basically choose x

I'm in Scotland, and had a feeling this was coming, so I ordered some fabric masks from Baujken. You pay for one pack, and they send you two so you can share with neighbours/friends. So far I've worn one to the supermarket, and to the pharmacy (just for hayfever stuff, not COVID!). I have seen people using those buff things that cyclists wear, and also women with the sort of printed fabric scarf that would be worn instead of a necklace rather than a warm winter scarf.

We are in Scotland so we ordered a couple of masks from a local craftswomen last week when the guidance came out. Found her on our local
Facebook group.

Thank you all some good suggestions here.

They're required on transport and in shops here. Try out the scarf walking about at home and see if it stays up - even the tight ones I had fell down. They are also too hot on transport in the sun.
I've made my own cloth masks from the many, many online patterns. Whatever you use, if they need washing then you will need at least two or three.
