If the banks were “too big to fail” and had to be bailed out, does the same not apply to the entire economy which is fuelled by businesses and people working in them and paying tax?

Servers · 04/05/2020 09:36

UC doesn't cover rent if you have a mortgage, and guessing that there isn't enough social or private tents to accommodate those who would lose their homes in the 6 months before the government would kindly lend you some money towards it. Of course people will be worse off on UC than recieving 80% of their wage, unless you think that people on benefits live the high life. That said, furlough isn't really sustainable.

Alsohuman · 04/05/2020 09:44

you realise don't you that comparing £92 and £2500 GROSS isn't the right comparison? Take away furlough and you're looking at the hundreds of thousands of people currently still employed being redundant. Long term. And UC also covers rent so pretending it is just a cost of £92pw is disingenuous

It’s not disingenuous at all. £92 is GROSS too. You do know that benefits are included in the personal tax allowance?

We’ve had periods of recession before when tens of thousands of people were made redundant, when thousands of houses were repossessed. It was bloody awful, nobody would wish it to happen again but it’s naive to think it couldn’t, especially with a government that thought austerity was a great economic policy.

Woodandsky · 04/05/2020 10:28

I run a medium sized business and without the furlough scheme would have already had to make lots of people redundant. Although we do not legally have to close 90% of our customers closed overnight, with no income we cannot pay our staff, it's as simple as that. Lots of employers are not huge multinationals you know.

I expect that furlough as it currently stands may be extended by another month or two, after that they will refine it to just the areas that are legally required to remain closed plus hopefully people who are shielding. Hopefully that will be enough to push our customers into reopening but if not we will have to let people go in the hopes that we can keep the company going and at least save some jobs.

Stellamboscha · 04/05/2020 12:48

Too divisive-already resentment from non-furloughed.

This was prior to mass immigration, it’s one thing to see foreigners sleeping in doorways, if we start having mass homelessness amongst teachers, nurses, software developers that’ll go down like a lead balloon....
if I was in that position I’d be phoning social services to come and get them. Foster care isn’t cheap

Alsohuman · 04/05/2020 13:11

We didn’t have mass homelessness in the last 20th century recession, despite a huge number of repossessions. And it’s pretty racist to say it’s fine for foreigners - many of whom are teachers and nurses - to sleep in shop doorways. Did you actually think before you posted that gem?

ChrissieKeller61 · 04/05/2020 13:26

At no point did I say homelessness is fine. Read what’s written

Alsohuman · 04/05/2020 13:30

You said:

The inference that foreigners sleeping in doorways isn’t a problem is pretty clear.

ChrissieKeller61 · 04/05/2020 13:49

No inference at all. You said that ...

Alsohuman · 04/05/2020 13:50

OK sigh

who is they?

Her employer can and recall her to work. The furlough scheme is running until June at the moment

userxx · 04/05/2020 22:00

@Rainbow12e Maybe it's stopping for your daughter. The scheme is in place until June.

No the government aren't ending. The scheme is running until June.

But lots of employers are starting to open up again. So for their employees its coming to an end.

People who are employed but have no work can continue to be furloughed.

Widowodiw · 04/05/2020 22:04

Well I think a lot of this will depend upon when schools go back. If schools aren’t back until September that makes sense for people who can’t work from home or for people that don’t have childcare ie able to share the load so they can work from home with a partner?! Surely if people can’t return to work because schools are shut, there’s got to be something in place to help those employees. It’s not their fault they can’t return - the schools are closed.

gubbinsy · 04/05/2020 22:09

@BlossomCat me too. Don't know when we will be able to re-open bi certainly not soon. A phased approach to extending furlough is something that will go a long way to supporting the entire industry's survival. We're going to be among the last group able to 'get back to normal'

SudokuBook · 04/05/2020 22:10

Same applies for people who’s workplaces are closed by the government @widow

MadisonAvenue · 04/05/2020 22:17

Something also needs to be put in place for people who have been told to shield.

SudokuBook · 04/05/2020 22:59

Sorry meant to say yes, agreed @MadisonAvenue

Polydolly7 · 04/05/2020 23:03

I think they will for the industries that can’t open. Airlines, hospitality, entertainment etc.

Depends when they plan to send kids back. Kids off school means people can’t work especially if grandparents can’t help.

PersonaNonGarter · 04/05/2020 23:13

I think the government will start paying people TO WORK. That is, you open your socially distancing cafe and can only take 20 covers where before you’d have taken 60. It is OK because the furlough scheme is supporting this.

So it’ll be govt supporting wages directly - but only of people at work.
