Worried about pre schoolers speech before school?

Dd3 starts school in September. Her speech is behind, she talks nonstop but doesn’t pronounce her words properly and is sometimes hard to understand. We were waiting for a speech therapist appointment (arranged with preschool) but obviously it won’t be happening now.

I’m worried that she will be behind come September and if anything her speech is getting worse because she’s not at play school :(

What do I do?

My pre school dd who is starting school in September has speech problems.
We have video calls with speech & language every 4 weeks and is proving quite good.
Most of them are still working but are just doing phone calls and video calls
Maybe phone them and even if they can't offer an appointment they may be able to give you some activities to do.

My DD needed speech therapy before school.

If I'm honest she didn't really get much help. She did a handful of group sessions but it really made no difference.

At the time I wish we had went private.

But the she started school and all of a sudden she got the support she needed. It took a while of course but she was signed off before the end of Year 1.

I know its worrying, but just keep talking to her. There may be some resources available on line and games you can play online. Possibly contact the SLT and see if they can advise on things. Much of what we needed to do was done at home anyway.

The best things you can do are probably what you are already doing. Limit screen time and play. Talk to her, play with toys with her, use dolls, tea sets, bricked etc and encourage dialogue from her too. Role play with the toys encouraging her to join in or repeat words that you say. Use picture books and encourage her to name things in the book, if she can’t manage to pronounce them then help her by showing her how to shape her mouth ie help her to make the individual sounds F........I........ SH. I’m sure your doing all the right things do try not to worry too much.
